You’re not really a Trumpist if you don’t tell some big lie. Trump voter suppression commission honcho and anti-immigration extremist Kris Kobach came to South Dakota yesterday to endorse and raise money for our Secretary of State Shantel Krebs as the Trumpist choice for our U.S. House seat. On camera with KDLT, Kobach told this lie about immigrants and terrorism:

“The vast majority of terrorists attacks we have seen in the last two decades since 9/11 have been by people who come to the United States from outside,” said Kris Kobach [Allison Royal, “Shantel Krebs and Trump Advisor Visit Sioux Falls While Critics Organize,” KDLT, 2017.12.14].

As Royal notes, this statement is false. The New America Foundation has studied jihadist terrorism in the United States since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Even among this limited set of jihadists, the “vast majority” do not come from outside the U.S.:

Far from being foreign infiltrators, the large majority of jihadist terrorists in the United States have been American citizens or legal residents. Moreover, while a range of citizenship statuses are represented, every jihadist who conducted a lethal attack inside the United States since 9/11 was a citizen or legal resident [Peter Bergen, Albert Ford, Alyssa Sims, and David Sternman, “Terrorism in America After 9/11: Part 2—Who Are the Terrorists?” New America Foundation, retrieved 2017.12.15].

Bergen et al., 2017
Bergen et al., 2017

The New America Foundation finds that among the thirteen lethal jihadist terrorists since 9/11, eight were born U.S. citizens. None were from the majority-Muslim countries targeted by either of Trump’s travel bans.

And that’s just looking at the terrorist attacks we can tie to fakers prooftexting their Qurans and pretending to kill for Allah. Right-wing extremists appear to kill at least as many Americans as folks perverting “Allahu Akbar!”

If we broaden our view (and good public-policy makers should, if we really want to dedicate limited government resources to doing the most good and preventing the most harm) to mass shootings, which happen more often and create more terror even if they aren’t terrorism, Kobach and Krebs’s demonized immigrants fall even farther from view. White American men have committed the majority of mass shootings in America.

I’m not even going to say “vast” majority, because I don’t need Kobach’s Trumpian exaggeration to make my point: Kobach lied to KDLT yesterday about immigrants’ role in terrorism in the United States.

I thought Krebs was smart enough to not fall for the racist lies tossed out by this group and others like them. I was wrong. She has disqualified herself.

Nick, I hear that Susan Tully, who works for the same anti-immigrant group as Kobach lawyered for prior to his Secretaryship, actually spoke up against some racist bushwah told by Ron Branstner at last week’s anti-immigrant rally here in Aberdeen. Even Susan Tully has some sense of responsibility for standing up against some false statements. But Krebs stands right next to Kobach telling this easily disproven whopper and says nothing.

If I can roll out of bed and call out Kobach’s lie, so can Shantel. She has a website and Facebook page and a lot more access to the media than I do. She could make a stand for simple truth without undermining her tough-on-immigration stance. Will she?

Krebs has done a pretty good job with the Secretary of State’s office after the mess her predecessor left her. But going off the cliff with this Kansas radical is a very Gant move. Very disappointing.

Just remember Krebs GAVE Kobach the SD voter list for FREE in August of 2016 so he could use it for his plans to destroy American democracy. She is a disciple of his filth.

Just to have the baking of a right wing extremist from the failing state of KS ought to throw red flags in every direction. Probably no one in SD will notice. #Sad

Bruce, did she hand that list over for free? Her public position is that the Trump/Kobach commission has to pay for its copy of the list just like everyone else. Can you send us to link to the evidence that she surrendered a list for free to Kobach in 2016?

As Ror says, Krebs has done mostly good work as SOS and cleaned up Gant’s abominable messes. But that good performance in her elected duties doesn’t change her own abominable turn to Trumpism as a House candidate.

It was widely reported in the mainstream media and I have saved copies of the turnover. The 2017 claims of not turning over the list is a butt covering move for her campaign.

The difference in 2016 and 2017? She needed to make it look like she is protecting us for the house campaign so she now offers to sell list versus just giving it last year.

Makes me wonder if she had legal authority to give the list away last year and who is willing to prosecute.

Krebs is Roy Moore in a skirt. Krebs makes NOem look like a truth-teller.

It was reported the other day that Trump tells 5.5 lies a day. South Dakota republicans probably aren’t far behind.
I need one of Cory’s spreadsheets to keep up with the daily lies.

She cleaned up Gants mess what a night Mare. Then she is starting a new one with this guy from Kansas .I thought Dusty was bad , looks like Shantel is trying to out do him.

Following up on Roger’s comment, NYT compares Trump’s lies to Obama’s and, ignoring misleading statements and mild exaggerations, finds that Trump made 103 demonstrably false statements in his first ten months in office, while Obama made 18 such demonstrably false statements during his full eight years in the White House. Plus, NYT notes, once proven wrong, Obama tended not to repeat his lies, while Trump, like Kobach, keeps shouting them.

  12. Bruce 2017-12-17 09:27

Moses, Cory and all, she did not clean up Gant’s mess. She just put a different face on it and we are pretending it is fixed because she says it’s fixed. We have even more hidden data than before Gant.

All roypublicans lie, but others tell the truth without a flinch. “”Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the majority whip, on Sunday said a provision that could personally enrich key Republican lawmakers was added to the final tax bill as part of an effort to “cobble together the votes we needed to get this bill passed.” Cornyn was pressed about the provision on ABC’s “This Week,” after an International Business Times investigation showed that Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee suddenly switched his vote to “yes” after GOP leaders added the provision, which could boost Corker’s real estate income.”” With roypublicans, country does not matter, it is all about how much money they can steal from taxpayers.
