Hey, Democrats, don’t forget: we have another convention tomorrow!
Dem Con 2.0 happens Friday, August 10, at 6 p.m. at the Icon Event Hall, 402 North Main Avenue, in downtown Sioux Falls. Due to Democratic incompetence and Republican inconsistent application of law, Secretary of State rejected the certifications of nomination of the seven candidates chosen by the South Dakota Democratic Party at their June 15–16 convention. Secretary Krebs had accepted those certifications of nomination, even though they arrived two to five days late and were signed by the party chair instead of the convention officers. South Dakota Republican Party chair Dan Lederman gleefully pointed out those errors, Secretary Krebs did his bidding, despite a court ruling a week previously stating that, once she certifies a nomination, the Secretary of State has zero power to rescind it.
The party website is treating this repair job as a non-event, and if executed properly, it should take no more than five minutes. But, my fellow Democrats, Dem Con 2.0 is a real, legal convention, not a mere signing ceremony to produce new nomination documents and dispatch someone to drive them to Pierre by Monday, and we need to do certain things right. Per state law and SDDP constitution, Here’s what needs to happen at the Icon Even Hall tomorrow at 6 p.m.
- Delegates need to check in by 6 p.m. Delegates definitely include any certified Democratic candidates for Legislature, Legislative district party chairs, county party central committee members, and state party executive board members. Delegates should also include anyone who was chosen by county parties to serve as delegates to the June event.
- SDDP chair Ann Tornberg needs to call the convention to order and announce her choice of temporary convention officers, Larry Lucas and Alli Moran.
- A delegate needs to rise, be recognized by the convention chair, and say, “I move to nominate Michelle Lavallee for Lieutenant Governor, Randy Seiler for Attorney General, Alexandra Frederick for Secretary of State, Woody Houser for Commissioner of School and Public Lands, Tom Cool for Auditor, Aaron Matson for Treasurer, and Wayne Frederick for Public Utilities Commissioner.” (Robert’s Rules say a nominator need not wait for the chair’s recognition nor obtain a second.)
- When nominations cease, the delegates need to vote.
- Nominations must receive a majority vote, as calculated by the whacky statutory formula giving more power to votes from counties that had higher turnout for the Democratic gubernatorial ticket in the 2014 general election.
- Once the results of the vote are announced by the convention chair, before proceeding to any other business, a delegate should then move to require the convention officers to sign certifications of nomination for the seven freshly nominated candidates in the presence of the delegates. Consider requiring signing in triplicate.
- Delegates should also offer a companion motion or at least call a point of information seeking an explanation from the chair of how, when, and by whom the certifications of nomination will be delivered to the Secretary of State. If the answer is not immediate, confident, and satisfactory, delegates should move to compel designated party members to be at the Secretary of State’s office door at 7:59 a.m., Monday, August 13.
- The Democratic platform adopted on June 16 was not affected by our June errors. Nonetheless, to ensure compliance with our party constitution (Article 9, Section 13), a delegate should shout, “I move to adopt the 2018 platform as published on SDDP.org.” Delegates should then vote (i.e., all shout aye, because it’s Friday, and folks are thirsty.)
- The chair should then entertain a motion to adjourn.
Neither law nor bylaws define a quorum for convention, so five of us could do this job… but I’d like a few more eyeballs on the proceedings. Fellow Legislative candidates and other delegates, we have just five minutes of work, but it’s really important work. To ensure we have seven top-flight candidates backing up Billie Sutton and Tim Bjorkman on the ballot, to ensure we have a full slate of statewide candidates who can come boost our own Legislative campaign synergy, join me for Dem Con 2.0 at the Icon Event Hall tomorrow evening, 6 p.m., downtown Sioux Falls.
On 6, a motion to force certification prior to end of session would likely be out of order as there is time to rescind a vote and recast for another nominee. While not likely, the motion is extra hoopla and extra room for dinging while being not required. Ann’s already said she will be driving the signed paper herself to Pierre Monday as well. Also, stylistic point that nobody does but we totally could, motions to adjourn are annoying an unnecessary. A chair can end out a meeting with a gavel rap if there’s no other new business presented.
I offer no ding; I simply want proof that the will of the convention is properly certified. If for some reason after the signing the body changed its mind, the body can move to tear up the signed sheets, revote, and sign new sheets.
Fair enough on motion to adjourn as unnecessary… but one last shout is fun. :-)
Get used to losing Dems. A gay guy in NYC has a Facebook page where thousands explain why they are walking away from the Democratic party. It’s basically a pushback to the overly rigid “progressive” ideology. They may have to purge or marginalize the progressives if they want any long-term success, but certainly not let them become the face or voice of the party. It’s in a way similar to the damage right-wing Christians did to the Republicans in a word: Extremists.

Yes, I know the leftist media has responded to the Walkaway Campaign by saying it’s just Russian bots but that’s not the case. The left remains in denial. I stopped and talked to the Dems recently who were quick to say they only lost because of the RV voters. There are some very good people who run as Democrats in this state but have the disadvantage of the label itself. It was important for the young man at the table to say “I’m Progressive and I’m proud of it!!!” Okay young man I was thinking you’ll grow up someday – most likely. The Progressives in the South Dakota Democratic Party are probably the ones to blame for the loss as people like Cory and the young man, who are too far to the left, insert themselves in places moderate Democrats don’t want to go. Here’s what’s happening this year. Republicans all over the country are either losing seats that the party has held by huge margins for decades, or barely squeaking through special elections by the skin of their teeth in seats they have held for decades and previously won by 10+ points. The bottom line is that almost everywhere nationwide the GOP party is floundering and losing the margins of victory it gerrymandered for itself. Just look at the Ohio seat held for over 30 years by the GOP party that was up for election this week. The GOP party candidate is up by about 1,500 votes with about 8,500 votes yet to be counted (absentee and provisional). Uh Oh! The real WalkAway is taking place in the voting booth this year, and the results are there for everyone to see!

Yes Cory it is off topic, but can I tell one story? When I stopped at the Dem table they joked I couldn’t vote for the Republican I had been talking. Oh fun I thought they are light-hearted so I gave them my Trump arm swing and Go Trump holler. The older guy was jovial until I asked if he could say one nice thing about Trump. He recoiled so I offered that Trump had made contact with North Korea but he refused recognition of any accomplishment. I pushed a little more to say you’re the kind of guy that looks for something good in everybody – interestingly a few years back when I was a rabid liberal he counseled me that he knew many reasonable Republicans. I searched 375 million profiles in USA and around the world (on three search sites) and there’s no one named Mo Reese Delk. There is a LinkedIn profile for a Maurice Delk who calls himself a professional writer, meaning he’ll write and say anything for money. That fits with his fake YouTube post, huh? Mo has a YouTube channel where he portrays an activist Republican and asks for your donations. Send him some cash, big talker.
