Yankton County has suspended absentee voting and voided all received ballots, not because of Trumpist election-rigging, but because of a typo:
Notice is hereby given that Yankton County absentee ballot voting has been suspended.
A typographical error has been identified in the ballot language for the Referendum: Road and Bridge Levy. The measure is correctly identified. However, the Yes or No voting block should state Resolution instead of Referendum.
In order to correct this typographical error, Yankton County will be recalling the affected ballots and will issue corrected ballots reflecting the intended language [Yankton County Auditor’s Office, notice, 2026.09.25].
Auditor Patty Hojem says any Yankton voter who has submitted a ballot so far, including absentee ballots that the inept Trump Postal Service may yet be struggling to deliver, will need to revote. The Yankton County Auditor hopes to have corrected ballots by Wednesday and plans to send corrected ballots to everyone who has requested absentee ballots, including those to whom erroneous ballots have already been sent.
The Yankton County Auditor has committed a grave error in allowing bad ballots to be printed and distributed. The result of this error is that actual votes—an entire first week of early voting—are being thrown out. Remedying this grave disenfranchisment cannot be left to a mere notice in the mail. In addition to sending out prominently labeled corrected ballots as soon as possible, Auditor Hojem should include boldly labeled notices to everyone from whom it receives spoiled ballots explaining that those original votes do not count and that the voters must submit new ballots to make their votes count, not just on the spoiled county resolution line but on all of the statewide offices and ballot measures and other local offices. Auditor Hojem and her staff should also call every voter who has submitted a bad ballot and go to local absentee voters’ houses with corrected ballots in hand to ensure that those voters understand that their original votes don’t count and have a corrected ballot in their hands so they can revote.
At least it’s accidental. A screwup for sure but nothing trumpien.
