HCR 6008 Seeks Legislative Endorsement of Self-Contradictory SDGOP Platform

Last updated on 2023-02-10

Representative Phil Jensen (R-33/Hisega) wants the Legislature to affirm the South Dakota Republican Party Platform.

House Concurrent Resolution 6008 lifts every plank of the 2022 SDGOP platform and converts it to an expression of the Legislature’s affirmation, support, and defense of “certain principles, values, and goals.” Republican self-contradiction is all there: total abortion ban plus opposition to all government mandates, rejection of socialized health care plus support for the VA and IHS, freedom of religion plus forced recitation of the “Under God” Pledge of Allegiance and display of the Ten Commandments and South Dakota’s Christo-fascist motto in public schools, expressed commitment to the physical and mental wellbeing of all South Dakotans but rejection of comprehensive sex education and promulgation of the unsubstantiated claim that teaching sexual abstinence before marriage produces psychological and physical gains.

How any one person can be expected to affirm every one of those often conflicting platform principles crammed into this multi-subject resolution escapes me. But radical Representative Jensen is waggling the old right-wing saw that the Republicans in power (i.e., not him and his feckless, posturing Freedom Caucus) are a bunch of RINOs who don’t support their own party’s platform (which, in many ways, is true: see eminent domain for pipelines). He’ll cackle at any Republican on House State Affairs this morning who dares not support his platform resolution.
