Noem Not Getting Ink in The Hill’s 2024 Speculation

The Hill has a couple of articles speculating on the GOP 2024 Presidential primary. One refers to the “shadow primary” taking place as eager GOPers run on tiptoe around Trump:

The once-quiet strategizing and networking by a handful of prospective contenders for the next GOP presidential nomination has grown louder in recent weeks, as would-be hopefuls like former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo begin to more aggressively flex their political muscles [Max Greenwood, “GOP Shadow Primary Gains Steam Ahead of 2024,” The Hill, 2022.04.17].

A second article spotlights the Republican governors who are using their 2022 campaigns to gain attention for 2024:

In Oklahoma, Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) this week signed a new law making it illegal for a doctor to perform an abortion, with exceptions only in the case of a medical emergency. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) signed laws banning transgender girls from high school sports, controlling the way schools teach about race and gender and eliminating permit requirements for carrying concealed weapons.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R), a low-key politician who rarely makes headlines outside of her state, has launched campaign advertisements that echo Trump’s evidence-free false statements about the 2020 election results.

“The fake news, Big Tech and blue state liberals stole the election from President Trump. But here in Alabama, we’re making sure that never happens,” Ivey says in her first ad. “The left is probably offended. So be it.”

…Other conservative incumbents who once would have coasted to renomination now find themselves accused of heresy. Idaho Gov. Brad Little (R), Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R), Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) all face primary challenges, though all are favored to win both renomination and another term.

…Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is near the front of the pack. This year, he has signed legislation establishing a new state agency to combat supposed election fraud, banning abortions after 15 weeks and limiting education on sexual and gender identity for children, a bill opponents call the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

That law is among the conservative measures that has gained traction in other states. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has said he will make a similar version a priority when the legislature returns to Austin next year [Reid Wilson, “Republican Governors Sprint Right, Eyeing Reelection and 2024,” The Hill, 2022.04.17].

Neither of these articles mentions South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. Maybe that’s why she was with Corey Lewandowski in Houston a week ago Saturday, seeking his advice again on getting back in the running for 2024.

Tangentially Related Twitter Diving: Maybe, Kristi, you could distinguish yourself from the Trump toadies jockeying for 2024 by returning to your prescient subtle-snarking of Inauguration Day 2017:

Kristi Noem, tweet, 2017.01.20.
Kristi Noem, tweet, 2017.01.20.

Deep down, Kristi, you know it’s true. Call Liz Cheney, kiss and make-up, and give America a double-barreled shot of rhinestone-cowgirl common sense, finally slapping away the Trumpist groping of Lady Liberty and bringing back Reagan Republicanism!

She’s got nothing of interest to Republicans except for her genitals. If they want a no-brain female VP candidate, she’s a good choice, but otherwise, she’s done.

    Haha, good Don!

The following twitter post is like Mueller’s report concerning the social media burn against Merrick Garland’s Trump coming prosecution. Valuable insight in this time of political divisiveness and disinformation/misinformation/hacking that threatens our nation’s survival (e.g. everything out of the mouth of the Noem administration and SD Republican Party).

Democracy is always in danger because it contains the seeds of its own demise. An authoritarian can win an election and once in office, batter and dismantle democratic institutions. . .

    She also says:

I suggest that the “immense scale of corruption” during the eras of slavery and racial segregation was worse.

Why? Because the injustices were legal.

Republicans break laws that didn’t used (sic) to exist. They want to go back to the good old days when they could cheat legally.

It reads as if the national media know more about Mrs. Noem’s legal volatility than outlets in South Dakota do. Nevertheless, expect her to begin camping out in Iowa where the extreme white wing of her party will hold one cross burning after another.

Looks like drumpf sucked his thumb to a nubbin. Love the small hands magnet.

If Sarah Palin survives the June 11 primary to obtain the U.S. House seat held by the late Rep. Don Young, the longest serving congressman in history, she will have a major megaphone to do Trump’s bidding and set herself up as his most logical (strange word considering all the cacophony that will result) pick for Vice President. It will double the amount of bat-sh*t-crazy Trump handily uses to his advantage for a national campaign.

First of all, Trump doesn’t need anything from a VP candidate. He’s the show. All that’s to be considered is how many more eyeballs can be transfixed by the show.

Sarah has what Noem will never have: Instant national name identification, a loud voice, a proven ability to grab headlines daily, and solid support from the craziest sectors of Trump’s base. It’s like Richard Nixon’s selection of Spiro Agnew for VP. Nobody wanted Nixon removed from office for fear of the immensely corrupt Agnew to become president. And when Trump gives Palin the order to commit treason, she won’t whimper and cower.

All Noem has to offer is substandard name identification, laziness in office and the proven ability to carry a flag while riding a horse.

The number of unforced errors Noem has committed have done jack to impact her popularity here in South Dakota, but it clearly appears to have done a number on her national profile.

Enjoy the consequences of your actions, Governor. You aren’t being held accountable here, but at least your chance at sniffing the federal executive ain’t happening. Little solace to people like me, but it’s something.

  7. Mark Anderson 2022-04-18 14:47

Desantis is the shortstop who wants to be centerfielder. The Snow Queen can’t compete with that. That’s why se she’s going for VP. Desantis can’t compete with that. Beauty before the beast.

  8. Arlo Blundt 2022-04-18 14:53

Well…Governor Noem offers very little to the Party as a candidate for national office…after spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on appearances around the country, she’s generated no excitement and very little interest. She offers nothing new, her positions are merely her loyalty to Donald Trump, she’s from the wrong part of the country (South Dakota is hardly a swing state), and her cowgirl gimmick doesn’t carry her far. Her “campaign” is time and money wasted and a disservice to the people of South Dakota.

  9. grudznick 2022-04-18 16:43

So, Mr. Blundt, grudznick is unclear if you are pleased she is apparently failing as a national candidate, assuming she really is one, or are you displeased? Or just another bout of NDS?

  10. Mark Anderson 2022-04-18 17:01

You know Arlo, when I was in Aix-en-Provence visiting students we sent there for a semester, I saw the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Ingre. Just place Trumps face on Jupiter and Noems on Thetis and you have it. Not only is it as close to a political cartoon as I will do, its just how Trump sees the world. She’s there to do his bidding.

  11. 96Tears 2022-04-18 17:01

Arlo – You probably get this from others too, but when I mention I’m from South Dakota or mention Kristi Noem to folks from outside South Dakota, the response is mostly “oh yeah, I’ve heard of your governor.” When asked what they think, invariably it’s “she’s pretty cool.” This comes from some non-Republicans too who don’t pay much attention to politics or government. When you ask folks what they know about her, the answer is 99 percent about her looks. Beyond that, nobody knows anything about her performance in office. Or, rather, lack of performance in office.

You and I know that anyone getting into position in primaries for national office had better be very good at campaigning and dealing with the hard punches coming their way. Our little powder puff has never run in a competitive legislative district or in a competitive statewide race until Billy Sutton came along, and I would caution anyone from thinking he made any hard punches in the campaign, even after she coerced some of his dumb neighbors to lie about him.

In an easy Republican state with less than 1 million population and a nearly deceased press corps, she has an easy path despite her slothfulness and lawless behavior. If she jumps into the big ring with people who have real resources and real name ID, she will melt like snow in July. I agree that she has wasted our state’s time and resources on a foolish ego trip. Trump or Disantis won’t need to carry someone so weak and untalented on their ticket. Even the parasites like Lewandowski will find another host to mooch from before December 2023.

She might as well get used to that scene of the glorified slough we call Capitol Lake from her bedroom in the $3 million mansion. Alone again, naturally.

  12. grudznick 2022-04-18 17:12

So you fellows would rather she stayed in her office in Pierre, and got really involved in the daily business of running the government. I am not so sure that would be as good a thing as you might think it would be. It could be bad. Very bad. I’m just sayin…

  13. 96Tears 2022-04-18 17:26

dr. grud – it’s not a matter of wanting her to stay in Pierre. I just fear she will have nowhere else to go in politics other than South Dakota. As to running government on a daily basis, why would she start now?

Maybe she can run for Rounds’ Senate seat in 2026 and find another ticket for government money and favors for as long as the constituents can stand her in Washington. She’s shown that she prefers sipping from the Potomac much more than the Muddy Mo.

  14. Richard Schriever 2022-04-18 20:11

OMG – bring back Reaganism??? WTH!! It was Reagan’s policies (worst president ever) that made Trump possible. Please – never again.

  15. RST Tribal Member 2022-04-18 22:02

One more term of the butterfly girl will pretty much do it for the inept inbred Republicans. As time goes on, the economy needs fixing, the elections need balance, smarts now lacking in the Dumb Doom in Pierre could come to bear after the voters in the state of fake faces and goof off places realize being near 50th in most things isn’t first.

Being mounted on a horse or advisor isn’t good government but that was then, that is now, that is not tomorrow. Governing is more than sound bits or chasing the wide tail of a soon to be forgotten loser. “Lack of” is starting to be the being of many statements referring to the inept inbred Republicans. The list is long, the needs are ignored, the silliness from January to March annually is wearing thin.

Who knows what the sparrow will bring. Change? Same? Decision time nears.

  16. Arlo Blundt 2022-04-18 22:13

Grudz–sorry I haven’t been obvious but my preference would be that she ride off into the sunset..not be successful in her reelection efforts, such as they are, and finds other work…if she doesn’t want to just retire to south of Watertown on her acquired swag, Maybe a job as a talking head on one of the right wing channels, or becoming Executive Director of the National Association of Small Time Rodeos.

Republicans’ embrace of Trump and racist authoritarianism flows directly from an existential panic. They feel that unless they act now and decisively — as they did on Jan. 6, 2021 — they will lose power forever and suffer cultural and demographic oblivion….

    And;

dark money facilitating all this Republican obstruction.

    https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/the-slime-machine-targeting-dozens-of-biden-nominees

So, in other words, Republicans in the party-death spiral, are for the time being, supported by the billionaire’s parachute of dark money. (Much of which is likely hidden and laundered in Sioux Falls!)

  18. Marcia Whiting 2022-04-19 12:05

I believe she is not popular with a large % of the GOP. They have backed her down on a number of occasions. She has never been more than a Sarah Palin wanna be.

  19. Mark Anderson 2022-04-19 12:30

Come on South Dakotans, sooner or later she’ll blow the fireworks at Mt. Rushmore. What else do you want?

Noem’s handicapped hunk of a Texass guv’s failed border truck inspections backfired spectacularly. What wasn’t found were any guns, drugs, contraband or human trafficking. They did find numerous trucks leaking engine oil.
