Independent: Cory “Exactly the Type of State Senator I Want”

Teacher, musician, and occasional blog and podcast guest Joe Berns does me the honor of putting his independent voice behind my character and qualifications for District 3 Senate:

I am writing in response to recent mailers distributed by the South Dakota Republican Party. They claim that Cory Heidelberger, a candidate for District 3 Senate, is a dangerous and rough individual, and that he is somehow unfit to interact with or make laws concerning children. This is patently false and, bluntly, a disgusting defamation of character. The fact is the information, quotes and pictures in this small propaganda piece were all taken wildly out of context and combined to create an untruth.

I will personally vouch for Cory Heidelberger.

I have gotten to know Mr. Heidelberger over last few years and can say he is a man of incredible integrity. I’ve met his family and know what a loving father and husband he is. He is smart. Cory is a deep thinker on the one hand, yet also a pragmatic problem solver on the other. He is a man of sound principle. He believes in and fights tooth and nail for truth, for justice and for liberty.

There’s a definite sense of fear that some established politicians in Pierre have of Cory. In some respect, they may be right to fear; he is a power-to-the-people kind of guy, which may not sit well with legislators who have voted numerous times to curb the people’s access to the democratic process. Cory, meanwhile, is an unabashed supporter of initiative and referendum and supports the voice of the people of South Dakota.

Cory Heidelberger is exactly the type of state senator I want representing me in Pierre [Joe Berns, letter to the editor, Aberdeen American News, 2018.10.08].

Thank you, Joe.

Can hardly stand the anticipation as to when Jason and the Argu-Bots descend on Cory’s excellent credentials and accuse him of all kinds of nefarious misdeeds.

    I wholeheartedly agree with Joe.
    Good luck Cory!

Joe Berns is a fine fellow himself, a beautiful asset in our community. I concur where Cory’s qualifications are concerned. How lucky we are that Cory is in Aberdeen and offering himself in service to shape up South Dakota government. Out with the dishonesty, hatred, and fear mongering. Cory trusts voters to make better decisions and as Senator Heidelberger, Cory will offer clear solutions with vision, that we may have our voices heard. We the People will vote.

Betty, you’re absolutely right about Joe. I’ll keep working to live up to what you say about me. Thank you for your public support!

That is one powerful LTE endorsement. I’ve seen a lot of them, but probably never a more convincing case in 200 words.

Credibility is flawed. Past actions, firing etc means not fit for office. RE: Democrat platform now. Sorry, you made the bed. Sleep in it.

Credibility is flawless. Past actions of many successful people that have been fired as a Republican “Steve Jobs was fired from Apple, the company he co-founded” RE: Democratic platform is as strong now as it has always been. Democrats stand up for women, for workers and just as important, healthcare. Yes, Democrats have made their beds! And we are loving it!

I appreciate Steve’s return. He provides fun examples of logic to test:

Steve’s claim: “firing… means not fit for office”

Fact: Bon Homme County Deputy Mark Maggs was fired from his job last June.

Steve’s obligatory conclusion: Deputy Mark Maggs is not fit for office, including the office of sheriff to which his neighbors elected him.

Notice also that Joe’s letter says nothing about the Democratic platform that Steve drags into his lazy rebuttal Joe’s letter. Steve doesn’t really rebut the things Joe says. He just raises a different topic.
