District 12 has a Democratic House candidate. Jeff Hayward wants to represent the district that stretches from the Sanford/USF neighborhood in the middle of Sioux Falls, down Kiwanis, out to Marion Road, and down to all those squiggly streets along Louise and west of Western down to the 90th and 95th Streets.

Hayward pitches his credentials as an Eagle Scout, small business owner, and state director of South Dakota Job Corps.

He’s also getting an early start on pitching himself as a guy who will show up for his district:

District 12 currently enjoys the spotty attendance of Republicans Rep. Arch Beal and Rep. Greg Jamison. Beal is in his second term in the House and could run again. Jamison may be too busy running for Sioux Falls mayor to worry much about re-upping for House. Petitions for Legislative candidates are due March 27, and the Sioux Falls municipal election takes place April 10, with any run-off slated for May 1. If Jamison loses his mayoral bid, his party pals in Minnehaha and Lincoln counties (District 12 includes bits of both) could easily put his name back on the Legislative ballot by replacing a petitioning Republican placeholder with Jamison by August 14.

Distantly Related: Bob Ewing knows how to show up early: the District 31 Senator from Spearfish is the first Legislative candidate to submit a 2018 nominating petition! According to the Secretary of State’s 2018 candidate list, Ewing submitted his petition on Tuesday, January 2, the second day that candidates could legally circulate petitions.

Just to clarify, Greg Jamison was at the SF Chamber breakfast. He and I sat at the same table, and all attendees could hear him when he was given the microphone for his two minutes. Rep. Arch Beal and Sen. Blake Curd were not present.

Mr. Wyland, do you think Mr. Curd is as smart as most of the legislatures do? I think he is smart. But do you think he follows your books for how to marshal the management of the legislatures, or is he an insane kook? Also maybe offtopic, was that his monster house that he has to move now and are you a neighbor?
