Jackley Panders to Book-Banning Moms for Liberty

Apparently ramping up his campaign to succeed Kristi Noem in 2026, Attorney General Marty Jackley is pandering to fascist anti-education group Moms for Liberty:

Heather Fields, tweet, 2023.08.24.
Heather Fields, tweet, 2023.08.24.

On this pledge to dog-whistle parental rights as cover for book-banning and fundagelical extremism, Jackley lists his title as “Father”. Supposedly he can’t use this pledge for his impending gubernatorial campaign, since the disclaimer at the bottom forbids signers from using the pledge for campaign purposes… which seems odd, since Moms for Liberty directs this pledge at candidates and elected officials, whose every public move like signing this pledge is aimed at courting voters.

And in this case, Marty Jackley is courting the lunatic fringe of his base, signing on with nanny-staters who want to dictate what his children and everyone else’s children can read.

Seems as if he were honor the pledge (medical care), then he would have retract his support for banning abortions and the trans laws
    that pubs have passed.

Jackley now realizes that there is no money in lawyering in South Dakota. Not real money anyway (you can tell by his duds, pretty shabby), guy looks like he has been on a serious drunk or something. The best way to open those pocketbooks and do some serious grifting is by doing a NOem. Damn right. That kind of money machine access doesn’t come from the rubes, it comes from doing the ALEC or the Leo or this kind of nonsense, which is really all the same. Good on Marty for showing us his real arse. His rise to the chair may even bring back Ravnsborg as his Lt. Governor, what a hoot, corruption be thy name.

  3. grudznick 2023-08-27 11:50

Mr. Jackley may dance with the lunatic fringe, but he does not do long slow dances where you hold the girl tight and the dance monitors frown, and then they call your ma to come get you from school.

What is it with Republicans and pledges?!!! Haven’t they graduated from grade school yet? That pledge is all hunky dory, as far as it goes. I want to see the fine print, and I suspect if you turn that pledge over, there is lot of fine print.

Everyone is for parental rights, but you wonder how committed some people are to others’ parent’s rights. I wouldn’t have wanted that drooling idiot Jackley telling my kid what she could or couldn’t read. And I would suggest the church ladies at Moms for Liberty stop engaging in censoring what kid’s teachers have available for reading. That would be interfering in my parental rights. If they don’t want their kids reading certain material, fine, but don’t try to limit my child’s rights to read.

  5. jerry 2023-08-27 13:42

So, there’s supposed to be a teacher’s union, right? How could a union believe in this crap? Billy Bragg has the answer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGNFR7pgxDY&t=217s

Marty is just trying to cash in from the rich folk, easy money from his perch.

I think the endorsement disclaimer is just MFL’s way to do its “due diligence” to make sure that the candidate/elected official signing the pledge is a legitimate radical conservative worthy of its blessing. Oddly, the list of endorsed candidates/elected officials on the MFL website thus far includes nobody from South Dakota.

One of the load-bearing planks of the MFL platform is limited government––”We stand together against government overreach and intimidation tactics.” But as has been proven time and time again, most republicans who spout a libertarian philosophy want a very aggressive and involved government when it suits their social agenda. There’s a word that: “hypocrite.”

The right to: 1.) Direct education (ban books), 2.) Direct medical care (anti-vax), 3.) Direct moral upbringing (no sex ed.)

In no time at all, SD will be pressing Mississippi, WV, Arkansas and Louisiana for 50th spot on matters of education. Geez, Marty, the pandering is so obvious. At least try to hide it a bit, OK?

  8. e platypus onion 2023-08-27 14:21

What parental rights do you have when you are forced to become a mother? magats, in recent years, have made a practice of using kids of all stripes as pawns in their attacks on personal rights.

Wonder if the local used car salesman/troll is courting these Mothers?

  9. All Mammal 2023-08-27 14:55

These Eva Braun dolls are meaner than an acre of snakes. And nuts.

I wonder how many parents and pediatricians or obstetricians have been charged in SD as of July 1st for violating the new anti LGBTQ law concerning children’s healthcare..?

It would be safe to say there have been multiple circumcisions performed on infants since the legislature outlawed parents and doctors from deciding the best care for their children.

So much for the fake concern and fervor over infant genital mutilation. Why, the indignation! Apparently the laws they pass only apply to actual necessary medical care. It is still perfectly ok to subject newborns to elective cosmetic slicing n dicing. Ouch. No wonder our culture is rife with misogyny and violence towards women.

Maybe if infants’ first experience on the good earth wasn’t snipping off his favorite handle while en utero, there wouldn’t be so much animosity as men. That is just my observation…it’s not really a thing..

    Book banners suck.

I hope you bend an ear and even if you aren’t a punk rocker, if you don’t dig Moms for Liberty, you’ll jump around to this. Including you;)

“the ALEC and the Leo”. Pro-grifting at the billionaire, nation-wide level! I like that reference jerry :)

Zit is proud of our world-wide grift industry of the criminal secret trust hideyhole. To protect grifters from “Demcrat taxes”. What a proud dirtbag, either a delusional or a grifter hissownself. Yuk. There are severe consequences society experiences when people like Zit publish their misguided tropes.

There appears ABSOLUTELY NO INTEGRITY IN MEMBERS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

Entitled to no respect as members of the human race our CONSTITUTION aspires to protect. They p#ss all over it with EVERY BREATH.

It takes a conscience of integrity to be a true Democrat or legitimate conservative or otherwise in a free democracy. Cheating in every way that think tanks, brain-washed lawyers (Bill Barr etc.,) and the Roy Cohn-types can imagine to get their way, trampling freedom, liberty, civil rights and the right to live.*

“Republic” is merely a method and it is turning out to be of limited value to preserve the gift it gives us. “See them, freedom marching” —Van Morrison’s 1972 take on the Belfast “troubles”.

Maybe he just doesnt want to get ‘Monae’d’ ?

But his name is on the ‘prosecute intrastate abortion’ thing they sent to Biden.

Certainly a political animal that is hell bent on being governor, will leave no stone unturned.

I know Noem is a pure blooded Evangelical to the worst degree, I just don’t know where Jackly fits on that spectrum. You have to have real religious conviction to be as awful as Noem is, Jackly seems more of opportunist like Trump than true believer, but maybe I am wrong.

  12. Arlo Blundt 2023-08-27 15:14

Marty doesn’t look enthusiastic about the picture taking. He’s hot and sweaty, his permanent press shirt is on the verge of crinkling, and his half smile/half grimace indicate he would like to be out of the door, pronto. Sort of, “a man has to do, what a man has to do” moment. Some days it’s just tough to be a Republican.

  13. Eve Fisher 2023-08-27 15:15

Not surprised a bit. Mr. Jackley likes to show up, talk fast, talk low, and ignore anything real that’s going on.
I remember a few years ago I accosted him about MyDakotaAddress (“RV mail forwarding” site) in Lake County, and how there weren’t any protocols for knowing who the people really were, and they were allowed to vote in our elections, even though they had no residency in South Dakota at all (except for a one-nighter at Lake Herman State Park) – which is, BTW, totally illegal, because the rest of us are supposed to pony up various forms of proof of actual residency to vote, etc. He told me, and I quote, “Those businesses generate a great deal of revenue for the State of South Dakota. Get back to us when there’s evidence of an actual crime.”
Well, MyDakotaAddress got shut down in 2018 because it turned out they were being used by a NY car theft ring, laundering stolen cars through their extremely casual requirements for “identification” and “registration”. So far, Mr. Jackley’s had no comment – at ALL – about it, not even back in 2018 when the Feds were all over Lake County.
Yeah, he’ll help Moms for Liberty ban books, but he’ll ignore a car theft ring in plain sight.

Eve, that was around the same time he was telling me his job was to protect government officials against criminal complaints, not to bring criminal complaints against them.

There are probably age appropriate levels for books but if librarians go to jail, that’s plain lunacy. Mom’s out there: your little Johnny isn’t as dumb as you think he is.

  16. Donald Pay 2023-08-27 16:45

Ah, the fine print is listed under the link in Cory’s post “book banning.” That’s where they list the books (at least in the Rapid City Area School District) they want government to censor. That’s where they want to take away YOUR parental rights, and your child’s rights to academic freedom. I was a former school board member at Rapid City. It is absolutely un-American what these people are trying to do. Jackley should be ashamed of himself.

  17. O 2023-08-27 17:17

When in conflict with the pledge of office “to uphold and defend the Constitution,” which of these pledges gets honored? Any pledge a public official takes — other than that pledge of office — should be disqualifying.

The very concept of theocratic “liberty” is an oxymoron.

six123, not only is little Johnny not dumb, he is also exposed to all kinds of influences from on-line sources (that parents do not monitor) on devices that parents provide (then don’t monitor). “Parent”: it’s a VERB!

  18. grudznick 2023-08-27 17:44

Mr. Pay, is sewage ash the root of the evil behind Mr. Jackley and the powers-that-be? Usually the root comes back to being softly dug into sewage ash, with tendrils blooming a short distance away in the fresh black dirt. grudznick cannot trace Mr. Jackley back to your purported sewage ash scheme, which has never been proven to really exist or involve any of the legislatures or employees of the state.

Now, some lobbists could have been involved, back in the day, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

  19. All Mammal 2023-08-27 18:58

MFL is clearly against education. Maybe instead of trying to undermine and disrespect teachers, they should study the homework their kids are sent home with.

From the MFL blue link, ‘book-banning’ Mr. H posted above:

    inexplicit sexual activities…
    Aberrent Content…
    aberrent activities…
Some books do not have information ready avail-
    able online,…
but if the title/author/topic seems suspicious, they have been included until we are able to read and review them….
The Freedom Writer’s Diary by the freedom wriers …
controversial claims about our justice system, including the claim that capital punishment is a descended of racial mob lynching….

They want to remove Native Son? That was required reading in high school. Margaret Atwood? Gee whiz. How to not be racist books? Wimpy ol romance books by Nora Roberts?

Trust me, Central’s library had way steamier rags than Nora Roberts. I won’t say by which authors because discovering those books is what got a perv like me into reading. I got really into literature haha. “Leave me alone when I’m reading my books, gosh.”
I feel sorry for the MFL gals. They need to unstifle and let people read what they want.
Any person claiming they are concerned about what books are in school libraries, yet will fork over a smartphone to their children are as pretentious as it gets. They are cool with handing their kids a device chalk full of butt sex but it is the schools poisoning little angels’ minds with books on empathy?!
I wonder how many of the MFL members even have kids in public schools….

    What? What?

  21. O 2023-08-27 20:36

As a parent, I do understand the sentiment of protecting your child. Where this tends to hit the guardrails is when that “protection” is from those who are “different” or unapproved of by theocratic religious Right extremists — especially people who school students interact with every day (sometimes not even realizing it). Even more importantly, I understand a “different” child needing to be seen in the books of their library.

Public schools are just that — not personal homeschools that have also let in too much of the riffraff — not religious schools that have let in too many of the unbelievers.

  22. Scott Ehrisman 2023-08-28 02:32

I had to chuckle a bit on Saturday at the Sioux Falls Farmer’s market. The petitioners for Groceries, Abortion and that other thing have a table opposite of Decline to Sign. Normally there are several volunteers at each table but there was only one at each on Saturday, and they were having a polite conversation about their families, at a distance. We all have a common enemy, and it ain’t the right or the left. If both sides worked together to provide better candidates we would be a lot better off.

  23. Donald Pay 2023-08-28 07:06

Scott is right. Pledges get you weak candidates. And they are purposefully divisive. If anyone, right or left or center, signs a pledge, any pledge,, they are too dumb to serve.

  24. John 2023-08-28 08:04

They can begin by banning the Bible from schools, per the petition and arguments in Utah. The Bible is full of the vilest human acts known to mankind – let’s protect the children: ban the Bible.

  25. Lars Aanning 2023-08-28 20:47

“I pledge to honor the fundamental rights of parents including…the right to direct the…medical care…of their children…”

But when 17-year-old Brady Folkens died in 2013 from being prescribed an antibiotic to which he was allergic and which caused his death from a fatal allergic reaction, the office of the Attorney General (Jackley at the time) continued the cover-up of Brady’s death from a common and benign virus — and refused to bring the perpetrators to justice…

Brady’s mother, Dawn Van Ballegooyen was never involved with or contacted about Brady’s medical care at STAR Academy. She would have “directed” Brady’s medical to an antibiotic to which he was NOT allergic…

So much for the pledge to South Dakotan mothers.

Ideology over religion – the home schooling movement is a movement to siphon billions from public education having little to nothing to do with educating children.

“speaking on a confidential conference call to a secretive group of Christian millionaires seeking, in the words of one member, to “take down the education system as we know it today,” Farris made the same points he had made in courtrooms since the 1980s. Public schools were indoctrinating children with a secular worldview that amounted to a godless religion, he said.

The solution: lawsuits alleging that schools’ teachings about gender identity and race are unconstitutional, leading to a Supreme Court decision that would mandate the right of parents to claim billions of tax dollars for private education or home schooling.”

““We’ve got to recognize that we’re swinging for the fences here, that any time you try to take down a giant of this nature, it’s an uphill battle,” Farris said on the previously undisclosed July 2021 call, a recording of which was obtained by the watchdog group Documented and shared with The Washington Post. “And the teachers union, the education establishment and everybody associated with the education establishment will be there in full array against us — just as they were against home-schoolers.””
“The 50-minute recording, whose details Farris did not dispute in a series of interviews with The Post, is a remarkable demonstration of how the ideology he has long championed has moved from the partisan fringe to the center of the nation’s bitter debates over public education.”
“Farris began his career facing off with social workers over the rights of home-schoolers and representing Christian parents who objected to “Rumpelstiltskin” being read in class.”

Help me understand how book-banning, etc. constitutes “increase transparency” & preventing “gov’t overreach”. In the name of “parental rights”? What sad, sick twisted logic they use to dupe the masses… & perhaps themselves.

A founding member of Moms For Liberty and her hubby, both high up mucky mucks in Floriduh magat party are facing rape charges, which seems to be commonplace or the party of family values anymore.

This is so cool. If a magat had a shred of decency they would denounce the entire rapist clan and quit voting. They are likely to ignore the truth about the sex criminals, even if their children are involved. Because forcing their values on the nation is the important outcome and nothing will stand in their way.
