You know that ruckus down in Florida where a private school pushed out its principal after three parents complained about the inclusion of Michaelangelo’s David in long-standing sixth-grade art curriculum? Two parents complained that they didn’t get a warning that their kids would be subjected to such imagery; a third complained that David is porn.
The Tallahassee school was using the classical curriculum cooked up by ultra-conservative Hillsdale College from Michigan. Hillsdale College is now yanking their license, because, as Hillsdale says, David is cool:
The Tallahassee charter school, which uses Hillsdale College’s classical education curriculum, is no longer affiliated with the college, said spokeswoman Emily Stack Davis in a statement.
“Tallahassee Classical previously held a license to use Hillsdale’s curricular materials,” she said. “That license has been revoked and will expire at the end of the school year.”
Hillsdale College partners with dozens of charter schools across the country to provide its K-12 curriculum, which prides itself on its classical approach to math, science, literature and history. The controversy at Tallahassee Classical distracts from the college’s classical education goals, Davis said.
“Of course, Hillsdale’s K-12 art curriculum includes Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and other works of art that depict the human form,” she said [Samuel Dodge, “Nude ‘David’ Statue Fracas in Florida Prompts Hillsdale College to Sever Ties with School,” MLive, 2023.03.30].
Hillsdale’s proposed K-12 social studies curriculum standards for South Dakota, which have their final public hearing on Monday, April 17, in Pierre (register to testify here; submit public comment here), have second-graders explaining “the major cultural features and contributions of the Renaissance in Italy and Northern Europe in painting, architecture, and sculpture” [Standard 2.SS.4.I, p. 23]. Hillsdale College itself wants our kids to understand the importance of big naked sculptures to Western civilization.
So Hillsdale punishes the school because its patrons are morons?
There are, of course, several levels of Moronity involved here, not the least of which is Tallahassee’s use of Hillsdale’s curriculum.

When a society makes a conscious effort to become unmoored from truth and facts, it becomes harder and harder to maintain a citizen-driven democracy. In today’s America, polling shows that 40 percent of registered voters (yep, the lpeople who show up to make decisions for all of us) are more than a little unmoored from truth and facts that were common assumptions only a generation ago. This bloc of voters fully endorse leaders who the architects of a looming dictatorship headed by fascist Donald Trump. In South Dakota and most midwestern states, those dangerous people are the majority of voters and have provided fertile ground to phony institutions like Hillsdale to further infect and groom American society and governance. Of course, it’s how Hillsdale’s grifters intend to get wealthy.
The David event underscores how the Trumpian setup falls apart. Trump is the source of lies that control the mob. When pretenders like Hillsdale, Noem, the ding dong parents whining at Tallahassee charter school and DeSantis jump into the monkey show, things start falling apart. Yes, these fascists endorse Trump and his constant stream of lies. But, they are not Trump. Their phony but acrimonious positions on issues, twisting of fundamental truths and their whacky antics start running afoul of the acrimonious position, truth twisting and antics of “the audience of One,” Donald Trump. It’s like third graders who just can’t keep their stories straight.
We’ve seen in Germany and nations throughout history how civilized, educated nations can transform into nations of violent, dangerous goons. The United States of America is poised at just such a turning point. Things can slide either direction. There are resources like Christo-white-nationalists and institutions like Hillsdale busy at work trying to normalize the unthinkable. Hillsdale’s mission, in my opinion, has less to do with whitewashing the evil systemic nature of too much American history. They’re here as a coordinated effort to control thinking and make the leap to a new, fascist reality with Donald Trump in charge of all information by any means necessary.
Punishment would be forcing Hillsdale curriculum to be used — not taking it away.

It’s called Vermilion Education LLC. They can’t even spell Vermillion correctly and were set up late last year.

While it may seem counter-intuitive to have Hillsdale put this work in its curriculum, it is clearly designed to celebrate the white-washing of Christianity that was happening in Europe at the time, pants or no pants. Works like these have seared the White European as the holder to the keys of Christianity into history. Fundamental building block for Hillsdale. And if it helps sort the alter boys for the real groomers, priests, all the better.
