Master of Distraction: Deutsch Leads Nationwide Attack on Trans Rights

Mother Jones has gotten hold of a batch of emails between potty-panicked Representative Fred Deutsch and a national network of anti-trans activists and organizations who helped Deutsch write his first bill to ban transgender health care for minors in 2019. That bill, 2020 House Bill 1057, failed in the 2020 Session, but as Mother Jones reports, it got the ball rolling on legislative assaults on transgender Americans across the country, including the trans-care ban, 2023 House Bill 1080, that Deutsch helped push to the Governor’s desk this Session.

Of course, waging war on the rights of people who aren’t Right Like Fred requires secrecy:

On a Saturday afternoon in August 2019, South Dakota Republican state Rep. Fred Deutsch sent an email to 18 anti-trans activists, doctors, and lawyers withthe text of a bill he planned to introduce that would make it a felony for doctors to give transgender children under 16 gender-affirming medical care. “I have no doubt this will be an uphill battle when we get to session,” Deutsch warned the group. “As always, please do not share this with the media. The longer we can fly under the radar the better.”

The message was one in a trove of emails obtained by Mother Jones between Deutsch and representatives of a network of activists and organizations at the forefront of the anti-trans movement. They show the degree to which these activists shaped Deutsch’s repressive legislation, a version of which was signed into law in February, and the tactics, alliances, and goals of a movement that has sought to foist their agenda on a national scale [Madison Pauly, “Inside the Secret Working Group That Helped Push Anti-Trans Laws Across the Country,” Mother Jones, 2023.03.08].

Deutsch’s secret plotting has made him a leader of discriminatory scapegoating nationwide, helping Republicans across the country keep the public attention off their chronic policy failures (like the 90%-Republican South Dakota Legislature’s struggle to live up to the basic Republican promise of cutting taxes). Way to distinguish yourself and the South Dakota Legislature, Fred!

Mr. Dr. Deutsch is insaner than most, and had to apologize to some young fellow in the legislatures today for badmouthing him, I am told.

Lar, you shouldn’t provoke the Bone Cracker Caucuses. They’ll twist you up, like the old days.

I do not think Rep. Deutsch can be dismissed as “insaner than most” when his bills are supported and passed by a majority in both houses of the legislature.

  5. grudznick 2023-03-08 19:59

That is a good point, Mr. O. We can only hope more of Mr. Dr. Deutsch’s law bills have died than have lived, or he has aborted them, in which case we can still say he is insaner than most. Otherwise, he’s just insaner than some.

So his Deutschness is out of the closet, brave boy. Sneaky Fred from Florence. It all comes into the light freddy.

He has a future as Secretary of the Department of Health in the DiSantos administration.

    Isn’t Florence a diverse city?

No need to fear LGBTQ, Rep. Deutsch. Hiding “under the radar”? Sounds like you and your buds are geeking out on gaydar. Calm down. Stop making us look like a bunch of spazzes.

  10. Arlo Blundt 2023-03-09 00:12

Yes, Grudz, Florence is diverse. They got a grain elevator and a cafe.

“I don’t know what a group of people in Pierre who decide to make life miserable and more dangerous for people are thinking, but it’s not going to happen in Minnesota,” Gov Tim Walz said to applause from a room full of LGBTQ activists and their supporters.

Deutsch is like a fox in charge of security over the hen-house at night; his actions in our legislature are a great example of his incompetence as a human being….

  14. Eve Fisher 2023-03-09 12:49

And I noticed that they’re not planning to stop with children: “The president of the American Principles Project, a member of the coalition, recently told the New York Times that his group’s goal is to eliminate ALL transition care, starting with children because that’s “where the consensus is.””
So much for small government. In your bedroom, in your womb, and now in everyone’s private parts.

Deutsch and his soft minded ilk are deal makers for the tyrants. Find a segment of humanity to ostracize. Create a fear. Create an enemy of that fear.
Create legal justifications to ban, bar, incarcerate , or deny medical treatment, or mandate treatment, to a segment of humanity . . . and do it while wrapped in the flags of nationalism and religion. Deutsch is a problem. Yet, the bigger problems are the as soft minded legislators who go along to get along as they advance their soft bigotry.

Mr. Deutsch is just three years younger than I am yet seems well grounded in Josef Mengele’s time.

I see it as another round in the Chiropractors vs. M.D.’s war. You can’t accuse the Chiropractors of not being self serving. Every legislature they promote their so-called profession at the expense of legitimate medical practitioners. Their quaking is oppressive.

Jenny! I see what you guys are up to in MN. And love it. Like my beautiful gay homie would say: It is absolutely fabulous! It is criminal to make our Land O Lakes neighbors worry for us. We need to get it together. Get it? Together!

Speaking of looking out for neighbors..Anybody have a bead on P. Aitch? Mike from Iowa?

I can give you directions to mfi. Just ask Cory for my email address and we will see if I can get you pointed in the right way.

  20. Jenny 2023-03-10 10:04

Thanks All Mammal. I haven’t heard from P.Aitch and hope he is alright.

As for Freddie Deutch- he could very well have a transgender fetish. We all know stories of closeted gay Pubs gettin’ caught with their pants down with a same sex person or the wife finding out he likes to cross dress. If Pubs would just realize it’s nothing to be ashamed of and to not be so afraid to be who you really are. It’s all about freedom after all, right?

  21. Mark Anderson 2023-03-12 20:21

Larry, the pubs are always making their policy on polls. Liberals set up women’s sports. Trans don’t have an unfair advantage. Republicans have taken girls from birth and made them take drugs to lower their cholesterol level. Look at Semenya. Republicans believe that no woman should have a testosterone level above a certain point. EVEN IF ITS NATURAL. This issue they believe wins them votes. They don’t care about women at all unless it’s at a subservient level. As long as they don’t get to control their own body. How many trans athletes are there for all this roaring?
You could go way back to Renee Richard’s the tennis player. She got to number 20 and never won a tournament but Chis Evert was worried that Richard’s shouldn’t be allowed to play because some of the men on the pro level who couldn’t win on the men’s side might transition and play the women’s. Think about that! That thought is about the level of thought of the current Republicans. It’s like the joke about Renee Richard’s. It went something like this. Renee Richard’s wanted to adopt a child. She didn’t care what sex it was because she would make it a girl anyway. Now that’s the level of Republican laws they are passing.

  22. larry kurtz 2023-03-13 09:22

Good morning, Mark. I bear no illusion that the Republican Party will ever do the right thing ever again.

  23. P. Aitch 2023-04-09 13:51

Hi, Jenny. Thank you for your concern dear friend. All is well.
