In Response to Citizen Request for Abortion Exception, Noem Says She Doesn’t Propose or Support Legislation

Tom Lawrence does excellent work documenting the substance of the conversation that Leah Bothamley and Tiffany Campbell attempted to have with Governor Kristi Noem at Golf Addiction in Sioux Falls Tuesday evening before the Governor backed out of her rare pre-announced scheduled public appearance. Lawrence’s account makes clear that the “aggressive demeanor” that Golf Addiction management attributed to a “group that bombarded” the Governor consisted of two women who had abortions demanding that South Dakota state government restore their right to bodily autonomy.

Campbell explained on Twitter that Governor Noem misrepresented to her South Dakota’s abortion ban, claiming that it would allow women who find themselves in the medical situation Campbell faced in 2006, pregnant with twins and having to abort one fetus to save the life of the other, to have their abortions, when in fact South Dakota now allows abortions only to save the pregnant woman’s life. Lawrence also gets on the record Campbell’s description of another incredible whopper from the glowering gubernatrix:

[Campbell] then asked Noem to bring a bill during the 2023 session to allow for such exceptions to the law. Campbell said Noem told her she does not bring or support bills, which Campbell, who worked as a lobbyist in Pierre, said is not accurate.

Gov. Noem’s spokesman, Ian Fury, said Noem listened to Campbell, “clarified some facts,” and then told her “let’s have that debate this legislative session.” He said Noem tried to make it clear that she never supports a bill “before she’s seen specific language” of the bill [Tom Lawrence, “Abortion Is the Issue That Turns SD Politics Fiery, as Gov. Noem Just Discovered During a Campaign Stop in Sioux Falls,” South Dakota Standard, 2022.09.01].

Indeed, Governor Noem proposes bills all the time. The Office of the Governor requested eight specific bills in the 2022 Session. She lobbies for and against bills all the time.

Put Noem’s two incomprehensibly incorrect statements to Campbell Tuesday together with her completely deflective talking-point recitations on Fox News yesterday and CNN on July 3, and you have to wonder if Kristi Noem is able to engage in genuine, factual conversation with anybody.

  1. Losing to a Democrat would definitely dampen the DeSantis druthers.

I can’t do the proper South Dakota ladylike drone bozo, pinching my lips and never speaking out about current politics. Taboo whoopty doo. We have to use reason and call out Governor Numby Noem’s supporters for voting in opposition of truth; therefore voting for darkness and death. Demonic. The devil isn’t going to appear ghoulish. She appears in the form of a snooty little snot, too high up on her horse to bother with those whose necks she trods upon.
I am working on diplomacy instead of diatribes and drunken sounding arguments. Any recommendations are appreciated. Dakota Free Press is the best weapon so far. However, so many South Dakotans choose not to read or seek information. We have to convince people who fancy themselves to be intelligent that She is a cloven-hooved, dirty little trickster and doesn’t deserve our votes, let alone our earnings and futures.

Noem is a yellow-bellied coward and a wimpy liar. She can’t handle a woman half her age in a South Dakota parking lot while she is surrounded by her lackeys.

What a shame that South Dakota’s first female governor is such a low life.

  4. Tiffany Campbell

All she does is spew lies, as if I don’t know the abortion laws in this state. I’ve been working on abortion access for 16 years. She isn’t used to getting pushback on her lies, so it spooked her and she fled like a coward. If I scare her, how does she think she can be successful on a national level?
    Thanks for the coverage, Cory.

    Ms. Campbell,

You are my new hero! Keep fighting the good fight.

Tiffany, since you have been studying abortion laws I wonder if you agree with my analysis of the SD statutes on First Degree Murder charges and the death sentence for women, doctors and anyone else that tries to help them with an unauthorized abortion? If you haven’t seen this analysis, I can send you a summary of each relevant statute I found. I authorize Cory to give you my email address and you can let me know what you think. Or perhaps Cory can link to one of my most recent DFP comments where I cite to, and quote from, each relevant statute. I would highly value your opinion on this terrible state of the law in SD.

Mrs. Noem sees the Abortion ban as neither “sad” or “divisive”. She views it as a triumph of political Will.

  8. Bob Newland

Yeah. Whattya think she tells the cuckolded Bryon Noem?

All Mammal and all of you brave posters. I applaud and encourage your efforts and intelligent thoughts and words.

My discouraging experience in Fall River County in this blighted state makes me despair about the “intelligence” of its residents. I wrote a LTTE 2021-04-29 15:20 that, in part, stated: ” I am acquainted with an 11-year-old local student who did not know what a cushion is or how to spell it, and a 9-year-old who cannot count past fourteen. (Is our children learning?)”

    The paper published it.

We cannot expect South Dakota voters to suddenly read, seek information, or fancy themselves to be intelligent when they and the public school teachers are stupid, lazy, unmotivated, and abysmally undereducated themselves. FACT.

    I wish I had recommendations.

Quote ‘O the Day ~ “incredible whopper from the glowering gubernatrix” … priceless

For some reason, the paper’s name and email address was deleted in my previous post. It is news.frcherald@gmail.com

  12. Riffling through the detritus of the Family Arnold one can’t help to come away with the sense that Ron’s wife saw every woman as competitors and passed much of that on to a daughter who found affirmation only in beauty pageants and in the eyes of men.

  13. Bob Newland

“Detritus” is a good word in this context.

  14. Blessed be. May the lord open.

  15. Bob Newland

Bonnie, I also live in Hot Springs. I hear you. I am not quite as disillusioned as you are, but I hear you.

  16. grudznick

It is true that many if not most of the teachers in the county of Fall River are very low on the SILT. Sad, but true.

  17. Blessed be the fruit. Praise be.

  18. Tiffany Campbell

Cory, you have my email address, feel free to give it to beercreekbat.

  19. Tiffany, BCB, and other interested parties will find the question of whether women aborting their pregnancies in South Dakota are subject to first-degree murder charges summarized in this July 28 blog post. Governor Noem insists that women will not be prosecuted for any crime under South Dakota’s abortion statutes, but given Noem’s inability to understand her own laws and Legislative activities, we cannot take her promise as any sort of legal analysis of what our laws actually say or would allow more attentive governors or prosecutors to do to women seeking abortions.

    Thanks Cory!

  21. The military has restored reproductive rights even in states where surgical abortions are illegal or restricted.

Ellsworth Air Force Base contracted medical services to Rapid City Regional a long time ago so which will it be: a B-21 bomber base or is a state law targeting pregnant people jeopardizing military readiness? TRICARE pays for some abortions chosen by military personnel so after Kristi Noem becomes Ron DeSantis’ Veep choice will a Governor Larry Rhoden sue to overturn a winning ballot measure codifying Roe?
