Sioux Falls AFL-CIO Endorses Tatewin Means for Attorney General

Update 12:03 CDT: South Dakota Federation of Labor AFL-CIO President DuWayne Wohlleber informs me that the state AFL-CIO does not endorse candidates before convention. He emphasizes that Caraway’s announcement reflects a decision made by the Sioux Falls chapter but not by the state federation. I have updated my headline and text to distinguish the local chapter’s action from the state federation’s neutrality.

Résumé, campaign finance success, organization, and cross-partisan establishment connections say former U.S. Attorney Randy Seiler has the Democratic nomination for Attorney General buttoned up.

Undo a button or two: yesterday, Sioux Falls AFL-CIO president Kooper Caraway, who gave the best speech at McGovern Day in April, announced that the Sioux Falls union workers he represents are backing Tatewin Means for A.G.:

Tatewin Means, Kooper Caraway

Brothers, Sisters, and Relatives

For decades, the working people of South Dakota have been exploited and taken advantage of by a small minority of the most elite political and business interests. While corrupt leaders line their pockets off of the backs of hard working South Dakotans, our families are expected to work multiple jobs for little pay.

This has been the reality for thousands of working families. And it will take all of us to change that reality.

Working families need a champion in Pierre. Working South Dakotans deserve a Fighter who will work for ALL of us, not just the privileged few.

That is why the AFL-CIO, the organized working class of South Dakota, strongly endorse Our Sister Tatewin Means for Attorney General.

We invite all who are able, to join us in building a broad based People’s Coalition to change the culture in Pierre and the lives of working families across our state.

HokaHey!

In Solidarity

-Kooper Caraway
President [Sioux Falls AFL-CIO, Facebook post, 2018.06.07]

Means is “excited to have the backing of such a vital labor union….” Vital is right! Walking into convention next week with the backing of some of the South Dakota Democratic Party’s most reliable foot soldiers and organizers should grab a lot of delegates’ attention.

Say, Randy, Tatewin, one of you wouldn’t want to switch and run for Secretary of State and save us a hard choice, would you?

    Cory,
Tatewin did some work with AIII, Stacy Phelps, GEAR UP, etc, back in the day, so there’s something you can investigate for us.

There were a lot of Native American people on and off the reservation that did work with Stacey Phelps, unless you believe in guilt by association.

I would bet that Mr. Seiler would stand a better chance, with his vast administrative experience, of beating young Mr. Barnett for the State Secretary than would this young woman, who does seem very capable herself. I just don’t know if she would beat Mr. Barnett. She might beat Mr. Russell easily, should that handsome devil come out of the convention with a polished noggin and a new marching order. It is a tough choice for the Democratic Primary voters.

Now, if Ms. Krebs runs for State Secretary again and wins, which is highly likely, then Ms. Means might be the better one to put up in opposition. A tough choice indeed.

Its very exciting and wonderful that the union endorsed Ms. Means! She truly would be a swamp drainer and a citizens’ backs protector. The SDGOP would absolutely, totally, completely, 100% HATE THAT!! Their entire scum sucking Corruption Machine would be at risk.

A female Native American former Oglala Attorney General, for Governor, ain’t too bad at all. Talk about glass ceilings. Randy is stellar, and a trial lawyer is MUCH more than a mere administrator. We win either way.

Kristie “NO OBAMACARE” (her family is cover for life, I’m guessing, courtesy of her “gimme” US House republican election bestowed on her as the uneducated record speed freak) fulfills no progressive future for the state whatsoever. She will only enable the state to continue to waddle on as a racist, angry, uncompassionate penny pinching (for the little people) GOP that distinguished themselves with their flood of hateful, negative, permanent written comments in the federal record trying to quash the Black Elk Peak name change. Daugaard resisted and then his admin. passed legislation restricting the name change law into the future. Kinda like the transparency law we initiated that SD GOP squashed.
