Make America Sick Again: Trump Drives Health Premiums Up, Insured Americans Down

The uninsured rate among working-age people — that is, those who are between 19 and 64 — is at 15.5 percent, up from 12.7 percent in 2016, meaning an estimated 4 million people lost coverage (Tables 1 and 2). Rates were up significantly compared with 2016 among adults with lower incomes — those living in households earning less than 250 percent of poverty (about $30,000 for an individual and $61,000 for a family of four).Donald Trump promised “insurance for everybody… much less expensive and much better.”

Unsurprisingly, we’re getting the opposite. Trump’s policies are leading to more expensive insurance, says his former HHS secretary Tom Price:

Tom Price, Trump’s first secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, said people buying insurance on government-run marketplaces will face higher prices because the tax law repealed the ACA’s individual mandate. The mandate had forced most Americans to have health coverage or face a financial penalty.

“There are many, and I’m one of them, who believes that that actually will harm the pool in the exchange market, because you’ll likely have individuals who are younger and healthier not participating in that market, and consequently that drives up the cost for other folks within that market,” Price said at the World Health Care Conference in Washington [Jeff Stein, “Trump’s Former Health Secretary: Americans Will Pay More Because GOP Weakened Obamacare,” Washington Post, 2018.05.01].

The Commonwealth Fund confirms those higher prices for low-income Americans. They also find fewer Americans with health insurance:

The uninsured rate among working-age people — that is, those who are between 19 and 64 — is at 15.5 percent, up from 12.7 percent in 2016, meaning an estimated 4 million people lost coverage (Tables 1 and 2). Rates were up significantly compared with 2016 among adults with lower incomes — those living in households earning less than 250 percent of poverty (about $30,000 for an individual and $61,000 for a family of four) [Sara R. Collins et al., “First Look at Health Insurance Coverage in 2018 Finds ACA Gains Beginning to Reverse,” The Commonwealth Fund: To the Point, 2018.05.01].

Donald Trump has brought us to this sorry state: when the President of the United States says X, expect the opposite of X.

How about a trial run for ten years of a bare bones health insurance policy for anyone who chooses to buy one. To steal a Republican slogan, “You can’t fix stupid.”, so if young males don’t want to have insurance they won’t be forced to. The policy can be easily added to the Medicare program with very few bookkeeping changes. We can means test it and you’ll not pay more than you can afford.

Trump loves being cruel, we see it everyday in him and what he Tweets.

He lied to the Trumptards about better health insurance and they still love him, what will it take for the Trumptards to see all the lies he has told them?

Trump’s recklessness with health insurance during his term may well lead to Medicare for all in the next administration. Medicare would be an easy sell the next time around, if the sick can only survive until than.

Let’s face it, the “Health Insurance Industrial Complex” has absolutely NOTHING to do with health.
Time for a 3% tax on GROSS income and universal healthcare. (This includes corporations since they are “people”).
OK, I’ll even subscribe to a $5-10 cco-pay for visits and drugs, but, what do Bears know.

Oops …… left off the “care” in healtcare.

Shouldn’t be surprised at this because pres $hithole averages 6.5 lies per day.

    Debbo,
The Washington Post reported today that Trump has told 3001 lies since being in office, and the day isn’t over yet.

Once again, Trump is hurting Trump voters….. But due to their “low information” status, they’ll never know….

Tom Price is as guilty as NOem /Jackley for this absurdity. All three either voted or went to court to kill the ACA, so the crap is sticking to their shoes and oozing through to their toes and beyond. The do nothing congress of Tom Price/NOem with Jackley being their lapdog, put those that are just under subsidy threshold, with no affordable coverage and then, decided upon themselves, to do the same with those that are border line and above subsidy line, to screw the same way.

For a state that is very squeamish about sexual orientation, we sure seem to like them having their way with us. It is not even forcible, but consensual. If you thought 2018 was brutal, we are about to get a load of 2019 and it is not gonna be enjoyable.

Let’s be honest-it wasn’t the tax law that did this it was 100% stoopid freaking wingnuts who voted for this. Both sides didn’t do this!

The UK has just introduced a sugar tax. We might consider the same for the health of our citizens.

“Originally, the Treasury forecast it would raise more than £500m a year, but that has now been reduced to £240m because some manufacturers have reduced the sugar content in their products.

In England that income is being invested in schools sports and breakfast club.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-43659124

Scotland has introduced this: “In an attempt to reduce the impact of cheap high-strength alcoholic drinks, the Scottish Government has introduced a minimum price of 50p (around US$0.70) for a “unit” of alcohol, a world’s first.” What all of this means is that citizens are working with government to promote their health and well being. Of course this comes from the “old country” that has seen far too much of the cruelty we Americans put upon ourselves in the name of the freedom to be sick to death with no treatments until we are near a very expensive death.

iowa wingnuts pass the most restrictive abortion bill in the nation- preventing abortions after fetal heartbeat is detected. Winguts plan to use this as a way to over turn Roe v Wade not that they successfully stole a scotus seat from Obama.

Docs say fetal heartbeats can be detected as early as 6 weeks, before a woman even is aware she is preggers. Wingut vultures, so much respect for women. Ought to make you puke yer guts out.

Over 4,000,000 people have lost their insurance coverage since Trump took office.
Many of those that lost insurance are what John Kennedy Claussen describes as Trump’s “low information” voters.
Those Trumptards are still praising their criminal president.

Discouraging news mfi. The tribes should then demand a couple of billion for each reservation annually to bring the jobs trump requires and the healthcare thingy would just go away with doctors and facilities coming on the run to take care of the health needs of the newly employed.
