Retiring Corrections Secretary Not Responsible for Problems in Corrections

Governor Kristi Noem appointed Mike Leidholt to run the Department of Corrections at the very start of her administration. So obviously he (and she) couldn’t be responsible for whatever is going wrong in the Department of Corrections:

I am grateful to Mike for his service to South Dakota and our Department of Corrections. While it is now clear the issues at the Penitentiary were the responsibility of others, I believe new leadership is needed to address the ongoing challenges in our prison system. I wish Mike well in his retirement after more than four decades of service in South Dakota law enforcement [Gov. Kristi Noem, statement on retirement of Corrections Secretary Mike Leidholt, 2021.08.13].

Noem has fired Corrections officials who were in place before she took office. But after suspending the Secretary last month, the Governor lets Leidholt “retire” with no blame… because in the Noem Administration, when things go badly, the buck stops at least two doors down from the Governor’s Office.

How about instead of posting BS like this and a vail attempt at saying the Secretary is to blame put forth a story showing the blame. Seriously, your posts become less and less. You’re just sad.

  2. So Steve, you’re saying that the chief executive of a state agency bears no responsibility for things that go wrong within that state agency, not even as a general rule? Was President Truman just BS-ing us when he said, “The buck stops here”?

I’m just talking principles here; it’s kind of tough to know where the blame is when all we have is an anonymous complaint and no report from the Governor.

We can lay blame for the only problem for which we have clear objective evidence, the uncompetitive pay and decreased benefits: as I have pointed out in previous sad posts, that problem results from the budget set by the Legislature and signed by the Governor.

So, Steve, I think I’ve answered your protest. Now answer mine: how is the Secretary of Corrections, who ran Corrections for two and a half years, not responsible for problems taking place in Corrections?

Steve, are you suggesting that he ran the Department for that length of time and were it not for that ‘anonymous’ letter he was oblivious to the letter’s comments of problems within the department?

  4. I’m sure another out of state contractor will clear this all up.

    Steve mentions a “vail” attempt.

Where I live a Vail attempt is skiing terrain above your ability and succeeding.

Where Steve lives a “vail” attempt is removing your hat when Nazi Noem’s horse farts.

Maybe Steve meant “vein” attempt, which is what you get when you refuse to piss in a cup for the cops.

Or, maybe just a vain attempt, which is what Steve’s post exemplifies.

  6. Porter – – maybe steve meant ” a veiled attempt.”
    Ain’t engulsh fun!!

  7. If there was any veil on my original post, it was awfully thin.

The real “veil” is Steve’s personal obsession with attacking me to cover for his inability to respond to legitimate questions of policy, government, and accountability for our elected officials.

Porter addresses Steve rather gently, but accurately.

well…Republicans always adopt the “deny and defend” strategy when confronted with reality. Their alternative universe requires total loyalty to ward of any argument based on reason.

Arlo, it seemed to me more like a “deny, distract and project” strategy. I haven’t heard or seen Trumpist Republicans make a good faith effort to “defend” when confronted with reality in a long. long while.

bcb-hard to defend the indefensible, no?!

Not hard to defend anything. Remember Hillary had emails. She sold all our uranium to Russia and she personally Benghazied four Americans.

  13. Arlo Blundt

Well..Mr. BearCreek, I won’t argue your perception. The Republicans often sound like 7th grade boys trying to argue with the Middle School Principal about their need for detention.

Steve – so you’re saying it was Daugaard’s fault?
