The departing Donald Trump reaches out to pardon Maria Butina’s old boyfriend, South Dakota man of international intrigue Paul Erickson:
Paul Erickson – President Trump has issued a full pardon to Paul Erikson. This pardon is supported by Kellyanne Conway. Mr. Erickson’s conviction was based off the Russian collusion hoax. After finding no grounds to charge him with any crimes with respect to connections with Russia, he was charged with a minor financial crime. Although the Department of Justice sought a lesser sentence, Mr. Erickson was sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment—nearly double the Department of Justice’s recommended maximum sentence. This pardon helps right the wrongs of what has been revealed to be perhaps the greatest witch hunt in American History [White House, statement from the press secretary, 2021.01.20].
The crimes Paul Erickson admitted he committed actually had nothing to do with his dalliance with convicted Russian spy Butina or any “witch hunt” against Trump. Erickson spent over two decades defrauding investors in the Dakotas, long before Butina ensnared her in the web of GOP contacts she spun to spread Russian influence in U.S. policy. Only Donald Trump would call spending 22 years cheating investors of over a million dollars a “minor financial crime.”
Alas, no pardon for Butina. If Erickson wants rekindle his Russian romance, he’ll need to fly back to Moscow.

Seth Tupper reports that Erickson was supposed to pay back his victims almost $3 million. The pardon erases that restitution and leaves the people he screwed screwed. Erickson literally gets out of jail free.
So, I guess Erickson’s Russian connections come through after all?
Erickson committed these crimes in South Dakota. Right? Why not prosecute him there? Trump may have given him a federal get out of jail card, but he could face prosecution in South Dakota. That’s assuming, of course, there are competent prosecutors and willingness to hold this crook accountable.
