Hydroxychloroquine Not Helping Patients… But Wasting Research Resources?

Stay-at-home orders appear to reduce the number of people who get coronavirus. More science is piling up to show that Kristi Noem’s wonder drug, hydroxchloroquine, won’t help the people who do get coronavirus.

UPI spotlights two new studies, one from France, one from China, showing hydroxychloroquine doesn’t help patients recover from covid-19. The French study shows no difference in outcomes for covid-19 patients with pneumonia:

…researchers in France assessed the effectiveness and safety of hydroxychloroquine compared with standard care in 181 adults hospitalized with pneumonia due to COVID-19 who needed oxygen.

Of those patients, 84 received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission and 97 did not. Treatment with the drug did not significantly reduce admission to intensive care or death within seven days, or the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome within 10 days.

The findings do not support the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia, said the team led by Matthieu Mahevas, from the department of internal medicine at Henri-Mondor Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris [“Studies Show No Benefit of Malaria Drug Against COVID-19,” UPI: Health Day, 2020.05.16].

The Chinese study found that mild to moderate coronavirus patients given HCQ recovered about as fast as patients not given HCQ:

Wei Tang, Zhujun Cao, Mingfeng Han, et al., "Hydroxychloroquine in Patients with Mainly Mild to Moderate Coronavirus Disease 2019: Open Label, Randomised Controlled Trial," BMJ, 2020.05.14.
Wei Tang, Zhujun Cao, Mingfeng Han, et al., “Hydroxychloroquine in Patients with Mainly Mild to Moderate Coronavirus Disease 2019: Open Label, Randomised Controlled Trial,” BMJ, 2020.05.14.

For their trouble, HCQ recipients appeared three times more likely to suffer adverse events, like diarrhea and vomiting.

A BMJ editorial notes there is a glut of hastily organized and wasteful research on hydroxychloroquine and other drug interventions while there is a relative paucity of research attention to non-drug interventions like masks and stay-at-home orders. The editorial says excessive attention to early crappy research on HCQ pushed research in the wrong direction:

Access to preprints has also led to irresponsible dissemination as flawed studies are picked up by the media. The preprint of the first reported study of hydroxychloroquine on 20 March 2020—a non-randomised study of 46 patients with inappropriate analyses—has been cited 520 times, while a larger, randomised trial of hydroxychloroquine posted on MedRxiv on 14 April showing no benefits has received far less attention. The unbalanced media attention to the first study has triggered a wave of what is likely to be largely unnecessary or misdirected research: 135 hydroxychloroquine studies have been registered on ClinicalTrials.gov since 20 March [Paul P. Glasziou and Tammy Hoffman, “Waste in Covid-19 Research,” BMJ, 2020.05.12].

Governor Noem, Sanford Health, please save your receipts: we’d like to know how much money you waste on your HCQ-bandwagon trial.

COVID Kristi isn’t interested in scientific research or people coming down with the pandemic. All she wants is her name on TV which was why used $130,000 of our money to buy her a vanity studio downstairs from her office.

Update. After 2 emails to Gov Noem asking for update on hydroxychloroquine research I still have not received a reply. Crickets. It’s been a month, I’m not going to hold my breath, unless I walk by someone without a mask at Walmart or Runnings. It’s getting harder to find enough breath.

No lives or health are sacred to Medical Moron and the GOP. Anyone and anything can and will be sacrificed to political expediency.

For those of you who have been playing along with the SD HHS Covid website Trend Data silliness, you should take another look. The original issue was a failure to update April rates with May data giving the false impression the infection numbers were decreasing. Now the Data Trend section has been updated. The April data has been deleted. Only May data is shown. And guess what? The number of sick people has again decreased! This is classic “how to lie with statistics stuff” since the peak was actually in early May.

Stumping for the product and wasting medical resources that could be better used on actual sick people whom the drug has been shown to help.

Suicide by stupidity, assuming you can believe the Liar in Chief, which is a really big assumption. I hope he isn’t lying for once in his life, and that he is taking this drug. I wouldn’t consider it a waste of medical resources if hydroxychloroquine actually ends Trump’s life, Cory. It’s probably better for public health if Trump takes as many pills as he can swallow.

If the Trump cult follows the leader, hey, take as many pills as you can and have a nice short life.

Pelosi got under drumpf’s thin skin by saying he was at risk taking Hydroxy-etc because he is old and morbidly obese. Game, set and match to Madame Pelosi. This match never got to love and never will.

On top of it all, the vaccine that was trotted out is a scam. The guy’s company is now the guy leading the government overseeing of his company. Who would’ve thunk it. Meanwhile the stock market goes up and up, what a scam for some thing that doesn’t work. The Pharma Bro, Martin S hkreli sits in the joint going, ‘damn, so that’s how it’s done.” https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12010149 You can bet this bunch of grifters will then be eligible for a taxpayer bailout.

I’ll wait until real scientists come up with a real vaccine before I get my hopes up.

Idiot Trump castigated the VA’s negative report against his and Noem’s malaria/lupus drug he’s taking “one pill a day”. He also has refused to display Obama’s presidential portrait in the people’s house. Could a worse crisis have befallen the world during this fraud’s term? Could our three DC “amigos” be any more spineless enablers? The GOP is engaging tens of thousands of citizen poll watchers in 15 states to intimidate “suspicious” voters. Everyone of us must do our share In electing Democrats up and down the ticket.

leslie, King Covid and Queen NOem are not idiots, they’re grifters that want you to think that they’re idiots while they strip your bones. Ag producers have found that grift so convincingly that they don’t know their pockets are empty.

If I were Obama, I wouldn’t want my picture in the same crack house..er Adderall house that trump resides in.
