Doctors’ Orders: Stay Home!

South Dakota’s doctors, nurses, and hospitals agree: the best thing we can do to save two million American lives is stay home:

Physicians, nurses and our entire medical community are urging all people to stay at home. We are honored to serve and put our lives on the front line to protect and save as many lives as possible. But we need your help.

Physical distancing and staying at home are the key to slowing the spread of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to give physicians, nurses and everyone on the front lines a fighting chance at having the equipment, time and resources necessary to take on this immense challenge. Those contracting COVID-19 are your family, friends, and loved ones.

…Staying at home in this urgent moment is our best defense to turn the tide against COVID-19. Physicians, nurses and health care workers are staying at work for you. Please stay at home for us [SD State Medical Association, SD Association of Healthcare Organizations, and SD Nurses Association, open letter, 2020.03.24].

Walk the dog, get some fresh air, but don’t go to the bar. Don’t go the take-out window; just eat leftovers tonight. Stay home, stay healthy, and reduce the number of cases our medical professionals have to deal with now and for the weeks ahead.

We just lost an aircraft carrier, USS Roosevelt has a serious terrible outbreak.

“U.S. Navy and Marine Corps service members in Guam were ordered on Wednesday to break their own quarantine to set up makeshift shelters for U.S. troops coming off a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, where an outbreak of the novel coronavirus is rapidly spreading within the hulls of the ship.

Some of the U.S. troops at Naval Base Guam, located on the western side of the U.S. territory at Apra Harbor, were assembled into 100-man working parties to begin transforming some of the base’s facilities into temporary quarantine shelters for some of the 5,000 service members arriving from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, a naval vessel where COVID-19 is spreading.”

Meanwhile, the numbnutz trump is gonna set his own social guidelines so we can all go to church. We’re gonna need more than that to get us out of this mess, God is wearing a homemade mask and working overtime and is too busy to listen to goofy. https://www.thedailybeast.com/coronavirus-outbreak-on-aircraft-carrier-sends-troops-scrambling?via=newsletter&source=DDAfternoon

So then, how safe do you feel with Homeland Security? Kind of a huge joke on taxpayers wouldn’t you think? We spend a trillion a year, every year for what, some boats that are deadlined now, troops that cannot be together. I imagine a formation like when I was in. A platoon of men about 30 more or less, would need to take a city block to march. The drill sergeant would have to use Whatsapp to provide the orders. And still, no testing.. Whatsapp with that??

Klueless Kristi needs to LEAD. She needs to speak from her heart (Yes, she does have one.) to the hearts of South Dakotans. She needs to encourage, inspire, uplift!. C’mon Kristi. You’re state needs you. Be brave!

    Here’s a leader, Gov. Tim Walz, D-MN:

We must take bold action to save the lives of Minnesotans. As a former Command Sergeant Major in the Army National Guard, I believe in having a plan – which is why I’m directing Minnesotans to stay at home and limit their movements to essential services.

The virus will still be here when this two-week period is over, but we’ll be better prepared. We will work with our health care sector, manufacturers, business community, and strong-spirited Minnesotans across the state to tackle this virus head on.

These are trying times. But we are Minnesotans. We see challenges, and we tackle them. No matter how daunting the challenge; no matter how dark the times; Minnesota has always risen up—by coming together. If we unite as One Minnesota, we will save lives.

Mr. Trump needs to cancel Easter. People can still order those egg boilers and chocolate rabbits, and of course a good hearty brunch is welcome on Any Given Sunday, but golly the Easter part of this needs to be called off.

Indeed, Jerry: aircraft carriers, TSA, and warrantless wiretaps are useless in protecting us from the current threat.

On the bright side, if everyone follows the doctors’ orders, no one will be invading anyone else’s country for a few months. Park those aircraft carriers and tanks; dispatch your soldiers to help the hospitals.

Let’s see Noem, her administration, the justices, the legislature packed in churches on Easter.

Let’s stop playing COVID19 whack-a-mole and over-react to defeat this virus.

drumpf says he knows states don’t need 30000 ventilators and he soured a deal with GM to make them. Now drumpf is trying to force GM to make ventilators he says the states don’t need and he doesn’t want to stockpile for future pandemics. That ain’t any more news than Aberdeen, South Dakota 3M becoming aware before January 21, 2020 that the pandemic would need 1 billion masks. 3M knew before that their plants in China were ordered by Chinese officials to only make masks for China, which was the purpose of the factories there in the first place.

So then Clyde, America knew at the same time China knew about the SARS like infection and yet, we did nothing…except for a plant in Aberdeen, South Dakota that is working 24/7 making masks for the pandemic that they knew was coming and already here. Stop blaming China, it’s racist and does nothing.

  22. jerry 2020-03-28 14:06

10 more new cases that we know of in South Dakota today.

  23. Debbo 2020-03-28 14:08

3M headquarters is here in Minnesota and they’ve been cranking out medical supplies 24/7, masks and other items.

First come, first served. They don’t indulge in trumpian blackmail, nor price gouge.

  24. jerry 2020-03-28 14:25

Debbo, 3M hasn’t gouged, but many of those they’ve supplied have.

“Tamer Abdouni is a Beirut-based consultant who facilitates the trade of, among other things, 3M respirators. Usually he can buy them for $1.25 apiece and resell them for a dime more. Lately the best purchase price he can get is $7.25. Even if he were willing to buy at that price, he says, selling respirators at multiples of his usual price during a pandemic would tarnish his reputation.

“3M makes the Rolls-Royce of masks,” Abdouni says. “People are holding stocks of masks and waiting for them to increase in value before selling them off. This is becoming very unethical. This is a war on coronavirus, and I don’t want to be a warlord.”

In the U.S., too, prices for personal protective equipment are being driven up in what has become a grim marketplace. It’s unclear whether some distributors are withholding masks as demand rises, but states are clamoring for every mask they can scrounge and must compete against one another to secure them. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on March 23 that masks the state usually buys for 85¢ now cost $7.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-03-25/3m-doubled-production-of-n95-face-masks-to-fight-coronavirus

Capitalism is a cancer that can be treated, but for the most part, in cases like these, it has metastasized into a killer. Germany had 6 million respirators disappear in Kenya, so these are being stolen and then sold on the black market. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-germany-masks/germany-says-six-million-coronavirus-face-masks-missing-in-kenya-idUSKBN21B1T0

Coronavirus: I tend to believe researchers, mostly because they’re educated in their fields, no doubt from public schools. Here is what the top of the world’s virus hunters say…consistently.

The coronavirus that causes Covid-19 might have been quietly spreading among humans for years or even decades before the sudden outbreak that sparked a global health crisis, according to an investigation by some of the world’s top virus hunters.
Researchers from the United States, Britain and Australia looked at piles of data released by scientists around the world for clues about the virus’ evolutionary past, and found it might have made the jump from animal to humans long before the first detection in the central China city of Wuhan.
Though there could be other possibilities, the scientists said the coronavirus carried a unique mutation that was not found in suspected animal hosts, but was likely to occur during repeated, small-cluster infections in humans.

The study, conducted by Kristian Andersen from the Scripps Research Institute in California, Andrew Rambaut from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Ian Lipkin from Columbia University in New York, Edward Holmes from the University of Sydney, and Robert Garry from Tulane University in New Orleans, was published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine on March 17.” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9

That old moo cow that dropped a calf that has scours…guess what? Coronavirus.

Look what your state did Debbo. More stuff, by the time we get this all figured out, the culprit may have been a toothless tobacco chewer from Slovenia who got drunk and ate a raw chicken.

“New research has shed light on a crucial biological mechanism that may have helped the coronavirus to infect humans and spread rapidly around the world.

A detailed analysis of the virus’s structure shows that the club-like “spikes” that it uses to establish infections latch on to human cells about four times more strongly than those on the related Sars coronavirus, which killed hundreds of people in a 2002 epidemic.

The finding suggests that coronavirus particles that are inhaled through the nose or mouth have a high chance of attaching to cells in the upper respiratory tract, meaning that relatively few are needed for an infection to gain a foothold.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota used X-ray crystallography to create an atomic-scale 3D map of the virus’s spike protein and its corresponding partner on human cells, known as the ACE-2 receptor.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/30/new-study-sheds-light-on-coronavirus-infection-mechanism

Why we are not more keen on public education is beyond words, look what they do with that education… these magnificent hero’s all.

Medical Moron has decided the current measures to save lives should continue through April.

    Maybe someone told him this:

“A new working paper from Michael Greenstone and Vishan Nigam of the University of Chicago’s Becker Friedman Institute for Economics underscores that the two goals are complementary. A regimen of moderate social distancing, like what many areas of the country are doing now, has the potential to save well over a million lives.

“And those saved lives are worth $8 trillion to the U.S. economy.”

  45. Clyde 2020-03-31 09:26

Of course there is nothing new about Corona virus’s in the world BUT the fact is that CHINA is where Covid 19 was first detected and realized as a problem. CHINA! And that country tried to hush it up till it was a wide spread problem infecting the rest of the world. FACT!

Another vid on CHINA’s response to this thing and the reason they were able to get it under control and the reason we will NOT be getting it under control.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycrqXJYf1SU

They hushed the out break up. When they finally got going on it they took the measures that were NECESSARY to get the thing under control. I lost tract of the story about our pharmaceutical industry raising H over the idea of Trump initiating the DPA because they might end up with Med production in this country that would cost them more than procuring it from what ever starving nation is willing to produce it the cheapest.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/business/economy/coronavirus-china-trump-drugs.html

Big Pharma, the people that make all the money off this scheme are probably the place to place most of the blame.

Just this morning the tube has a story about some sorry sout that went to the ER to get tested for CV 19 and was billed $9000 because his insurance wouldn’t cover it. Insurance company’s are saying they will have to raise premiums 40% next year to cover the cost of this disease. Lots of stuff on the propaganda media but I haven’t heard one word about Sanders ‘med for all’. My cousins in NZ appear to be getting things under control with enough PPE and tests to isolate this thing. They have that nasty SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!

When the public see’s a story about the guy that just got billed nine grand for a ER test how many folks that are feeling mighty sick are just going to keep going about their business or try to tough it out rather than being tested. Meanwhile everyone around them is getting infected.

  46. jerry 2020-03-31 09:56

    “”Mom, it couldn’t have been”

Those were the five words that the patient who dries her wet eyes heard on the phone. Holding on to a tissue, she rubs the dark circles underneath the green mask that covers her half face. She is 69 years old and a small body, covered with a white nightgown speckled with black dots. The feet, clad in small black shoes and matching knee-high stockings, rest on a gray concrete floor. Along with a plastic bag that keeps her clothes, she remains seated in one of the more than 350 beds spread out in Hall 5 of Ifema, the congress and exhibition palace in Madrid that has become a field hospital on the outskirts of the capital of Spain. It is surrounded by many others diagnosed with coronavirus.

San Francisco has done a great job. The governor of the state has done terrific as well. I watched the presser by Cuomo of New York today, that guy is on top of things as well. What he said about the 50 state bidding war for ventilators was astounding. He said it was like EBay, 50 governors plus FEMA bidding. Amazing the failure of the federal government on this, it truly is a dream come true for republicans.

Stay home and if you must go out, wear a mask.

  54. jerry 2020-03-31 13:58

Here is what Cuomo is speaking of. This is all out corruption because republicans will not declare to enact the Defence Production Act. There is to much money to be made brokering N95 masks and supplies.

“You never know what a new day will bring. What started as an early morning call with a friend to help get N95 masks to hospitals in desperate need turned into a roller coaster of contacts in a frenzied, pandemic-driven market. For the next 10 hours, I sat in on calls between brokers selling masks and potential buyers, watching the psychology of market pressures play out in real time as millions of masks changed hands in a matter of hours.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2020/03/30/i-spent-a-day-in-the-coronavirus-driven-feeding-frenzy-of-n95-mask-sellers-and-buyers-and-this-is-what-i-learned/#4e110e6b56d4

  56. jerry 2020-03-31 15:17

Think of this Clyde. If Bernie loses, we still win as he is in the senate. Biden could pick Warren as his mate and do like he said, run one term only. The idea is to dump trump so however we do it, makes no difference. One thing Biden already proved, he likes Obamacare and that will be needed as republicans, even to this very day, are trying to kill it. Meanwhile, Royal Philips N.V. has sold higher-priced versions to clients around the world.” https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/taxpayers-paid-millions-to-design-a-low-cost-ventilator-for-a-pandemic-instead-the-company-is-selling-versions-of-it-overseas

“Last Friday, President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act to compel General Motors to begin mass-producing another company’s ventilator under a federal contract. But neither Trump nor other senior officials made any mention of the Trilogy Evo Universal. Nor did HHS officials explain why they did not force Philips to accelerate delivery of these ventilators earlier this year, when it became clear that the virus was overwhelming medical facilities around the world.

An HHS spokeswoman told ProPublica that Philips had agreed to make the Trilogy Evo Universal ventilator “as soon as possible.” However, a Philips spokesman said the company has no plan to even begin production anytime this year.

Instead, Philips is negotiating with a White House team led by Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to build 43,000 more complex and expensive hospital ventilators for Americans stricken by the virus.”

May those profiteers be struck down with the virus and not be ventilated.

trump leaving aircraft carrier to die 4,000 deaths. Vote Blue, that’s who. These jackals in the republican party could care less if these sailors get sick and die. There is not money in it for them,

“The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.

The unusual plea from Capt. Brett Crozier, a Santa Rosa native, came in a letter obtained exclusively by The Chronicle and confirmed by a senior officer on board the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which has been docked in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew of more than 4,000 less than a week ago.

“This will require a political solution but it is the right thing to do,” Crozier wrote. “We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors.”

In the four-page letter to senior military officials, Crozier said only a small contingent of infected sailors have been off-boarded. Most of the crew remain aboard the ship, where following official guidelines for 14-day quarantines and social distancing is impossible.

“Due to a warship’s inherent limitations of space, we are not doing this,” Crozier wrote. “The spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating.”

He asked for “compliant quarantine rooms” on shore in Guam for his entire crew “as soon as possible.”

“Removing the majority of personnel from a deployed U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier and isolating them for two weeks may seem like an extraordinary measure. … This is a necessary risk,” Crozier wrote. “Keeping over 4,000 young men and women on board the TR is an unnecessary risk and breaks faith with those Sailors entrusted to our care.”

Jill Biden and Michelle Obama would’ve never allowed this to happen. The work they did for active and for veterans was and still is, astonishing. I miss them both.

This article from Wired helps explain why some people find a measure of comfort in this time in conspiracy theories and magical thinking.

“We can’t plan for the future, because in the age of the coronavirus, we don’t know what we’ll be doing in six months, or even tomorrow. We’re stuck in a new kind of everlasting present. ‘And so everything seems completely otherworldly,’ Matzner says.”

It’s part of an effort to make sense in a situation never experienced before.

I was in Spencer, iowa this morning and the main drag looked like a ghost town. I doubt if one business per block was open and I saw no kids in Walmart, which is usually overrun by juveniles when school is out. And, there are no reported Covid 19 cases in Clay county. To refresh your memories, Spencer iowa is where Soo Falls tv reporter Nancy Naeve ended up.

republicans/trump refuse to open the ACA/Obamacare for special enrollment. republican solution to the virus, abide by what the Anti-Christ says with how many will die…just do it quickly damn it, don’t linger. We must hit the 100,000 to 240,000 deaths else folks will think that trump is a liar.

The Pentagon wants 100,000 more body bags, so that is good news. At least we won’t have to rot in the sun. Those are the same guys who downplayed the virus in the first place following trump’s orders. trump said 240,000 of us would die, so that means we may have to double up in those bags. How cozy.

“The Pentagon is seeking to provide as many as 100,000 military-style body bags for potential civilian use as the U.S. warns that deaths could soar in the coming weeks from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested 100,000 body bags, known as Human Remains Pouches, through an interagency group that directed it to the Defense Department. The Pentagon is looking into buying more bags and will draw some initially from a stockpile of 50,000 it maintains, according to two people familiar with the request.”https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-01/pentagon-seeking-100-000-body-bags-for-civilians-in-virus-crisis

Probably will need to outsource them as well…and then the bidding war on those human remains pouches, will begin.

It’s not government at its worse, it’s Wall Street as always. This blonde bomber’s husband is a shot caller on Wall Street. We should call it what it is, insider trading. Here is her bloated hubby, Jeffrey Craig Sprecher (born February 23, 1955) is an American businessman, and the founder, chairman, and CEO of Intercontinental Exchange, and chairman of the New York Stock Exchange.” Doesn’t get any more fat cat than that.

Lake County reported it’s first COVID-19 case today.

Yesterday, I was out on my daily walk. It was a nice day. People were out riding bikes and taking walks too, sometimes in groups of two or three. But they were keeping their distance from other groups. I also kept my distance too.

Fast food is either drive through or curbside pickup. Some of the downtown restaurants and sports bars still have open dining rooms but with reduced hours and no buffet. City offices and the public library are closed to the public, but you can still get curbside pickup at the library. I’m not downtown during evening/night hours so I have no idea if these places still get filled with people.

Curbside pickup at the library? I haven’t heard of that yet! As long as they keep the books clean, that’s a good idea. Not everybody can download e-books… and if you have good books from the library, one child can read a real book while the other hops on the computer to do homework.

Right, Mike, the company says it will EVENTUALLY be able to manufacture 50,000 a day. Will that be enough???? Maybe they should be required to licence others or up the production.
