Neville: Anti-Muslim Rallies Seek to Perpetuate “Whites-Only Club”

A couple weeks ago, I spoke up at a candidates forum about the rank hypocrisy of Republicans preaching “Be nice to everyone” yet rallying with racists to make non-white immigrants feel unwelcome:

Education professor Alan Neville follows up with this AAN column by pointing out the unwelcoming nature of the most recent anti-Muslim rally in Aberdeen and calling on his fellow local Christians to be truer to the inclusive principles of their faith:

The Christian faith takes the concept of welcoming even further, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these” (King James Bible, Mark, chapter 12:31).

Admittedly, we still have room for improvement. But it saddens me that some in our community want to send us backward by perpetuating the “whites-only club,” alienating and subjugating those who are different. The ironic thing about this misguided mentality is that, unless you are Native American, you and your ancestors were once those very same outsiders, those who came to America as immigrants in search of a better life.

Let’s put aside fear and intolerance, embrace the idea that all are welcome in our community, and treat people with love instead of hate [Alan Neville, “All Are Welcome (Almost),” Aberdeen American News, 2018.09.28].

My recognition and criticism of the overt racism of a small, angry handful of my Aberdeen neighbors is not a figment of my imagination or a mere rhetorical flourish. Other good Aberdonians like Neville see this harmful closed-mindedness in our community and are speaking up to counter it.

Small-minded, petty and fearful people feel bigger and stronger when they try to push others down below them. It’s classic bully behavior. Confident, truly strong and healthy people aren’t afraid to welcome others standing beside them.

The GOP in SD and beyond have been using Lying Louse’s favorite tool, Fear, for several years now. Racism, misogyny, classism and other forms of bigotry and fear-mongering have been their substitute for sound policy ideas, creative, democratic governing and sound, ethical principles.

Fear debilitates a once strong citizenry and nation. Pootiepublicans are decimating the USA. Support every Democrat you can when you vote to save our country.

One Response to Neville: Anti-Muslim Rallies Seek to Perpetuate “Whites-Only Club”

But, but we’re not racists, wink, wink.

  3. OldSarg 2018-10-01 18:02

“Racism” here we go again. . . Everyone is a racist that doesn’t believe like we believe, anyone that doesn’t like loading up the SNAP program with illiterate immigrants is a racist, anyone who objects to the government forcibly moving unknown, uneducated people into our communities secretly is a racist. . . It’s just a lie and it’s an old lie. The only racism is in your own minds, what little minds are still there.

  4. mike from iowa 2018-10-01 18:56

OldSudssaver, don’t you bother to check any of your flapping gums statements before you embarrass yerself? No? That’s what I thought.

A person must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible, lawfully-present non-citizen to qualify for SNAP benefits. Non-citizens who are eligible based on their immigration status must also satisfy other SNAP eligibility requirements such as income and resource limits to receive SNAP benefits.Mar 24, 2017

Yer statement was a lie. Just an old lie. As per usual.

Focus, OS: I didn’t say everyone who disagrees with me is a racist. I said, and Alan Neville appears to agree, that the anti-Muslim rallies in Aberdeen are strongly motivated by racism. Many racists attend those rallies to have their prejudices reinforced. These out-of-state speakers come to cloak that racism in complicated code language… but those speakers stitch those cloaks from the same fabric and thread that the Emperor’s tailor used to make his New Clothes.

  6. mike from iowa 2018-10-01 19:27

Gawd, yer hopeless, OldSowbelly. Yer link did not say one word about illiterate immigrants.

This is what you said- anyone that doesn’t like loading up the SNAP program with illiterate immigrants is a racist,

    I reported:
A person must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible, lawfully-present non-citizen to qualify for SNAP benefits.

  7. OldSarg 2018-10-01 20:23

Cory, “muslim” is not a “race”. It is a political religion. Not a race. No color requirement. Ya don’t have to have any special color. Any color can be muslim. It is not a “race”. No color requirement, no racism.

Prejudice based upon ethnicity is called “bigotry”. There is a difference.

  8. Debbo 2018-10-01 20:36

That was a bizarre link totally unconnected to the topic at hand. While OS wants to argue semantics, that too is irrelevant because whatever term you’d like to use, the effect is the same.

Regarding the actual topic of this post: Yes, the organizers and politicians supporting these dishonest rallies are racists, bigots, Christianists, colorists, etc.

The politicians who try to exacerbate the differences between groups of people to create fear and hatred, thus furthering their own dishonest political grip and corrupt machinations are uncivil, nasty bastards who are actively working against the good of the state on all levels.

  9. Rick 2018-10-01 20:44

OldSally, I’m so proud of you. You know the difference between bigotry and prejudice. Did you use an old school dictionary or one online to figure it out?

  10. OldSarg 2018-10-01 21:18

Debbo, Rick and, God help him, stupid mike; My point is most of you all run around declaring how others think without thinking. When white people, such as yourselves, are deciding what is and isn’t racism you not only look stupid, people think you are stupid. I am a people.

  11. happy camper 2018-10-01 21:22

The main theoretical disagreement is the Paradox of Intolerance and just where it occurs. Overly fearful people will see that in invalid ways and those with unbounded tolerance don’t see it soon enough. Obviously Muslim extremism and terrorism has been the source of many of our disagreements.

“Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”

  12. Debbo 2018-10-01 21:22

You’re pretty good at bobbing and weaving OS, but you made no point. We’re echoing what they’ve publicly done and said. That’s how we’re supposed to draw conclusions, evidence based.

  13. Debbo 2018-10-01 21:28

“We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”
    Good find, HC.

I agree. We should not tolerate terrorists, be they Muslim or Christian extremists. Nor should we tolerate fomenters of violence. The difficulty lies in proving. It’s very complex and I often find it frustrating.

  14. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-10-01 21:37

OS, I never said Muslim is a race. I said that the people who cheer these anti-Muslim rallies use those rallies (and your word game) as a way to affirm their racist impulses under the cover of religious bigotry.

But hey: it all tastes like chicken.

  15. happy camper 2018-10-01 21:50

I know it’s a delicate argument, but it is a temptation for some to appear more sophisticated than others by saying they are completely nonjudgemental which I detest in the strongest terms because of this paradox.

  16. OldSarg 2018-10-02 11:28

“to affirm their racist impulses” you just can’t get past it can you. . .

Cory, calling people names, stereotyping groups of people, claiming you are above judgments whilst judging others does not get you votes and scares off potential friends.

Cory, if you want to win, or have a chance of winning you need to be more like Sutton and act like you are like the people who actually vote. Your lemmings on this site are not even from South Dakota, much less would potentially vote for you.

Comments by folks who express views like OS that immigrants take advantage of SNAP or are illiterate, hence undeserving of help in the USA seem to have a new mantra (with apologies to JFK) that epitomizes the new conservative greed driven outlook:

Ask not what we, as Americans who have pretty much everything we need, can do to help immigrants and refugees in need, rather, ask what immigrants and refugees in need can do to further enrich Americans.

  19. Jenny 2018-10-02 12:46

Soapsuds never did answer my questions about believing Dr Ford if she was his wife, sister or daughter. He ran away faster than soapsuds going down a greasy drain. Faster than a priest grabbing an altar boy, faster than the GOP voting for another tax cut for the rich.

  20. Jenny 2018-10-02 12:48

Cory, I really like your new shaven look and that red shirt is perfect on you. Very professional and confident.

  21. bearcreekbat 2018-10-02 12:49

OS reports on a new “study” issued by the Center for Immigration Studies. Problem is, as usual with OS links, USA today reveals that the study is by a group that has been described by the SPLC as an unreliable hate group publishing bogus research:

“Their research is always questionable because they torture the data to make it arrive at the conclusion they desire, which is that immigrants are criminals and a burden on the U.S. and our economy. It is the worst kind of deception, but politicians, the conservative media and some Americans eat it up because it always looks somewhat legitimate at first glance.”

    https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/center-immigration-studies

From my perspective, however, if the claims in the CIS study are in fact accurate, that shows a better side of America than the CIS seeks to portray, namely, that American greed remains a minority outlook that has not yet overtaken the American compassion deeply embedded in the hearts of our friends, families and neighbors.

  22. mike from iowa 2018-10-02 12:54

Once again OldScallopedmoosemeat finds a link that does not prove his original contention about illiterate immigrants packing SNAP rolls. His link echoes what I reported yesterday – A person must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible, lawfully-present non-citizen to qualify for SNAP benefits.

From OS link- “This should not be understood as some kind of defect or moral failing on the part of immigrants,” Camarota said about the findings. “Rather, what it represents is a system that allows a lot of less-educated immigrants to settle in the country, who then earn modest wages and are eligible for a very generous welfare system.”

  23. Jenny 2018-10-02 13:04

Soapsuds never answered my question the other day.

Cory why aren’t my comments coming through? You’re not blocking me are you?

  24. Jenny 2018-10-02 13:05

Oh you can delete the above comment, Cory. They were just slow getting through. Sorry

  25. Ryan 2018-10-02 16:28

OldSarg said “…the government forcibly moving unknown, uneducated people into our communities…” Has that ever happened, or is this hyperbole?

Debbo said “While OS wants to argue semantics, that too is irrelevant because whatever term you’d like to use, the effect is the same.” Words matter. Semantics matter.

Debbo said “The politicians who try to exacerbate the differences between groups of people to create fear and hatred, thus furthering their own dishonest political grip and corrupt machinations are uncivil, nasty bastards who are actively working against the good of the state on all levels.” You do this in more than half of your misandric and anti-white-male posts.

  26. Debbo 2018-10-02 20:41

“You do this in more than half of your misandric and anti-white-male posts.”

Keep trying, Stalker Ryan. I’m sure you’ll find somebody to pity you. (You’re cute when your lower lip quivers.)

  27. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-10-02 21:33

Opposing Al Novstrup’s preferred hate rallies does not make one “anti-white-male.” It does make one anti-bigot, anti-un-American, or anti-jerk.

  28. Ryan 2018-10-03 08:02

I don’t want your pity or anybody else’s. You are so dense that you don’t realize all you do is ask for help and pity and then accuse others of doing that. And then you rail against people being uncivil and nasty and you are doing exactly what you are saying you are against. You are a broken and weak excuse for an adult debbo.

  29. Jenny 2018-10-03 08:26

Ryan, what on earth is it with you and Debbo! For gosh sakes, calm down, go outside and get some fresh air. So you disagree, it happens all the time. Strong-minded, intelligent women are allowed to speak their mind.

  30. Jenny 2018-10-03 08:31

Ryan, Sardine (err – OS), Jason and other guys, isn’t it nice we live in a country where women are allowed to speak out? Where women can fight for their rights and not be held down by men?

  31. Ryan 2018-10-03 08:47

Jenny, don’t play stupid. I want all women to speak their minds. However, if somebody, man or woman, says something ignorant or discriminatory, it’s fair game to call them out. You come on here all the time and say mean things to people, so what makes you the blog-comment-police who gets to tell others to behave? I call out men on here more often than women, but that’s probably just due to a slight male majority. I’m an equal opportunity caller-outer. You don’t think females are so much more fragile and helpless than men that they need special protection from blog commenters, do you?

  32. Jenny 2018-10-03 10:41

    Back off Ryan.

  33. Debbo 2018-10-03 11:39

Jenny, he’s got B I G gender issues. “slight male majority” is you and I, dear Ann Beal on rare occasions, and all the males. That’s Ryan’s world view. He blew the first time I talked about white male privilege. He’s doesn’t think it exists and I won’t acquiesce. He can’t stand it.

Apparently DFP is a safe place for him to play out his gender issues via nasty attacks. Oh well.

  34. Ryan 2018-10-03 14:28

Jenny, you are a hypocrite. Go read young adult fiction if you can’t take what you dish out.

Debbo, you presume gender-anonymous people on this blog are all males because you are a dumb self-hating-woman. I don’t guess as to people’s gender, so when I don’t know a person’s gender, I don’t create a statistic for them. But again, you keep thinking you are special, so you feel free to be as ignorant and sexist as you want while pretending to support gender equality. I have been calling out stupid bigots long before I ever read the first of your many dense comments on this blog.

  35. Jenny 2018-10-03 15:33

What’s the matter Ryan? Youre meaner and madder than your usual. Did the boss yell at you? Did the wife get In an argument, money problems?
This is just too much anger for some comments on a political blog.
This is a liberal blog, Ryan. People here are gonna believe that white male privilege exists and that it is a problem for minorities
If you can’t handle our beliefsThen maybe you shouldn’t be here.

  36. Ryan 2018-10-03 15:56

Jenny, disagreement doesn’t mean anger. You think that it’s ok to poke and prod about personal issues while telling somebody that their comments are too much for a political blog? Let me say it again – you are a hypocrite. I don’t need to “handle” your beliefs. I don’t care what your beliefs are. Believe whatever you want, but if you spout off about something I think is stupid, I am going to say so. If you can’t handle my beliefs, go back to the salon and talk with your girlfriends about keto diets and your sensitivity to anything other than whole grains.

  37. Debbo 2018-10-03 16:07

Cheap shots at women, “go back to the salon and talk with your girlfriends about keto diets and your sensitivity to anything other than whole grains,” but no gender issues.

Name calling and insults, but no anger.

It’s the women’s fault because we’re “stupid hypocrites.”

Oh good grief. I don’t really think anyone who comments on DFP has the gender issues you do. Look, I’ve got more to do than try to walk you slowly through your issues. I’m moving on. Please be sure to have the last insult and denigrating comment about me or Jenny because that seems to please you and make you feel as if you’ve **won.** smh😒

  38. happy camper 2018-10-03 20:48

You are avoiding when it is necessary for a society to legitimately say no when “too much tolerance” is dangerous. If you thought more about it you might understand those who are fearful too soon and accept that some of you aren’t fearful enough. This argument collides in the most uncomfortable ways between Germans, Jews and Muslims. The article explains and challenges.
    https://global.handelsblatt.com/opinion/germans-jews-muslims-and-the-paradox-of-tolerance-908064

  39. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-10-04 05:38

I’ve heard from an ex-pat that exclusionary, unwelcoming attitudes like those expressed by the anti-Muslim rallygoers caused that ex-pat to turn down a good job in this town and leave, even though that ex-pat was born here and still has family here.

I worry that Ryan’s fragile “woe is men” lashings-out could have the same effect on women readers hoping to stay on topic.

  40. OldSarg 2018-10-04 06:01

Cory You found “one” expat. One, not four, not ten, you found one. There were thousands of Americans that became expats while Obama was president out of fear but we managed to take our country back so they were mistaken as well. You found “one”. Oh, since we are on the topic of fear, today the DoJ looks to come clean on using the government to spy on Americans under the Obama admin. I guess some expats were right. Where did your one expat go?

  41. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2018-10-04 06:15

OS, I make no statistical claim. However, you have found zero people who have moved to Aberdeen because they are seeking out anti-Muslim hate rallies. You also have zero evidence of the thousands you claim about your anti-Obama fantasy.

  42. jerry 2018-10-04 07:58

It is not “Whites-Only Club” but token resistance to what Swiss writer Adrian Kreig calls the zionist commitment to white genocide. Louis Farakan wants his reparations from the Rothschilds not because he likes whites but because he believes whites in America have been in as much bondage to the Rothschilds as non-whites — whites are just not smart enough to figure it out.

Benjamin Netanyahu: “Once we squeeze all we can out of the United States, it can dry up and blow away”

A comment made by Netanyahu, the prime minister of “Israel” to Jonathan Pollard (convicted traitor and spy) upon exiting Pollard’s jail cell.

There are too many empty suits like Corey running around being pimped by the zionists.

    thanks,
    Jerry

  43. Ryan 2018-10-04 08:01

Woe is men? Nah, never said that.

I said debbo is sexist and racist because she has double standards for the treatment of people based on gender and race. debbo keeps saying I have gender issues or white male privilege issues. that is an over-simplification and suggests that my “issues” are a fault of mine. In reality, I have issues with racist and sexist people. All i have ever advocated for is treating all people equally regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, or any other immutable characteristic.

I said jenny is a hypocrite because she belittles people on this blog and then tells others not to belittle people on this blog.

Plenty of you may not like me because I call out BS on a great liberal blog full of oblivious commenters, but 95% of the things you accuse me of are made up in your own heads to justify your moral ambiguity.

  44. mike from iowa 2018-10-04 08:23

Woe is men? Nah, never said that.

Yeah, you did without actually saying it.

  45. Ryan 2018-10-04 08:32

OK, mike…see my previous sentence. The first half doesn’t apply to you because you obviously like me very much, but the second half applies to you:

“Plenty of you may not like me because I call out BS on a great liberal blog full of oblivious commenters, but 95% of the things you accuse me of are made up in your own heads to justify your moral ambiguity.”

  46. jerry 2018-10-04 08:34

Ryan, you seem to go after Ms. Debbo because she is a woman. Simple as that. I dunno if she is a white woman, but if so, then that is more of a danger to your ego as well.

  47. mike from iowa 2018-10-04 09:11

Seen it, Ry, old buddy. The prosecution rests as before.

  48. Ryan 2018-10-04 10:37

jerry, that would make sense if I only called out debbo…or if i only called out women…but that is not the case. I call out more guys on here for being idiots than women. so…what about that…?

mike, you don’t seem to have the mental capabilities to be a judge’s gavel, much less a prosecutor.

  49. OldSarg 2018-10-04 10:55

“mike, you don’t seem to have the mental capabilities to be a judge’s gavel, much less a prosecutor” ha, ha!!!

You shouldn’t have used the word “gavel”. He does understand the word “hammer”.

  50. Debbo 2018-10-04 13:35

No, I’m not going anywhere because there are so many more smart, decent men here than the fragile and or angry ones. Thank you for your kind words. I really do appreciate you.

I think any time a political entity tries to artificially limit itself by skin color, gender, religion, culture, language, ethnicity or any other standard beyond “human,” they do so to their own detriment.

All of those differences bring with them new ways of thinking, perceiving, seeing, imagining, creating. Limiting the power structure to white males only is just that — extremely limiting.

What smart businessperson would intentionally limit themselves to a small fraction of the available talent pool? What college basketball coach would only recruit white players under 6 feet tall within her state’s boundaries?

That’s the kind of thinking the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant gang supports.

  51. mike from iowa 2018-10-04 14:49

Your defense sucks, like everything else you attempt on here, Ryan the Misogynist along with OldSferbrains. Your pathetic whiny appeals have already been denied and the judge says don’t darken his courtroom ever again. I think he believes you are kissing cousins of Larry Klayman. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone except the two of you trolls.

  52. OldSarg 2018-10-04 15:01

Dividing people by race, religion, national origin into separate disadvantaged groups brings no one together but only works to further divide a people. Here is an example of someone who sees the same issue but doesn’t understand what she is saying “I think any time a political entity tries to artificially limit itself by skin color, gender, religion, culture, language, ethnicity or any other standard beyond “human,” they do so to their own detriment.” That statement was posted by someone above this post and she ends it by saying these words “That’s the kind of thinking the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant gang supports” labeling is racist. Her words started out with good intent but she failed and descended into another racist rant.

. . . and this is why the democrats are failing.

  53. Ryan 2018-10-04 16:05

Another swing and a miss from mike.

OldSarg and I don’t see eye-to-eye on everything, but his most recent post pretty much shows what I’ve been saying – there is a double-standard being applied, and it’s horse sh!t.

You can call me all the names you want. I have thick skin… unlike some of you who like to dish it but can’t take it… and I’ve dealt with a lot more intimidating people in my life than you delicate cupcakes.

I don’t care if you like me or not. I don’t care if you insult me or not. All I have ever said is people should be treated equally and not judged or condemned based on immutable characteristics. I thought that was a common philosophy for liberal folks. However, you fall victim to the same thing you accuse other people of doing – ignoring the sad reality of rampant sexism and racism by phoney progressives because of personal favor. You accuse people who identify as republicans of racist and sexist behaviors, but you defend sexist and racist behavior from people that you like, and then you call me names for calling out that sexist and racist behavior. Classic.

  54. mike from iowa 2018-10-04 16:25

No Ryan, what you have been saying is you have it bad for Debbo and would love to hit her with a club and drag her to your man cave to prove it.

Your widdle white man insecurities have got you pretending to be tough on ladies. Maybe you are really after OldSferbrains. Hard to tell from the non-sense you spew at one billion characters per sentence.

  55. Ryan 2018-10-04 17:02

mike, you admit you don’t read or understand my comments and then you proceed to tell me what i meant by them. You are as bad as trump and his other lackies.

  56. OldSarg 2018-10-04 17:22

iwacko you’re not right. There is something seriously wrong with you.

  57. Debbo 2018-10-04 21:56

OS, I was unable to follow your comment about me. You said, “That’s the kind of thinking the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant gang supports” labeling is racist.

You confused me with your addition, “labeling is racist.”

Are you saying using descriptive words is racist? Description or observation is not racist. It is describing one’s physical characteristics.

For instance, the Watusi tribe of eastern Africa is very tall, sometimes having 7 footers. Overall, Dutch people are the tallest ethnicity in the world. Neither of those statements are racist. They are descriptive.

North Koreans are among the smaller people of Earth. Scientist believe that’s due to generations of poor nutrition.

That’s not racist either, more description based on observation. Check a dictionary definition of racism to help yourself understand that there is a critical difference.

  58. jerry 2018-10-04 22:50

China is now who trump says put him in the white house and not Russia. We all have to hate China because they are not white like Russian’s. Get ready for the new propaganda coming from a Fox news outlet near you. Oh, and now China wants him out because he is white and they are not. Gwaaad, what a mess. What’s up is now down. Still are not selling soybeans though, so what are we gonna do? Looks like we are gonna lie our way into trying to force China to do just that. Who knows, maybe it will work…or maybe not.

  59. Jason 2018-10-04 22:56

    Jerry,

How many illegal chinese and Russians voted in the 2016 election?

  60. jerry 2018-10-04 23:03

All of the Russians, widdle Russian

  61. Debbo 2018-10-04 23:14

    That was pretty clever, Jerry.

  62. Jason 2018-10-04 23:18

    Let’s ask Cory,

    Cory,

Was Jerry and Debbo’s response intelligent?

  63. jerry 2018-10-04 23:42

    Clearly, both were.

  64. Jason 2018-10-05 00:08

    Jerry,

Cory is the person running for a SD Senate seat. I think he is capable of answering for himself.

I usually do when there is a heavy lift, but a widdle Russian is a feather to me. Tomorrow is paytroll day for you, get your rubles and get after the liquid taters.

Running for a Senate seat does not require one to answer every question, especially questions that are not matters of broad public concern that can be resolved by legislation. Sometimes a good candidate, like a good teacher, allows other people in the room to test out their answers and sustain the conversation.
