Woman Carries Loaded Deer Rifle in Moving Vehicle, Gets Shot in Foot

Guns don’t kill people; people kill people. But watch out: guns do wound careless hunters in the foot:

At approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, a 32-year-old South Dakota woman was shot in the foot by her gun as she was driving north of Presho, according to officials with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks (GF&P).

As the woman was driving her vehicle scouting for deer, she drove over a bump in the road. The gun discharged and she was struck in the foot. Her husband was a passenger in the vehicle and was not injured [“South Dakota Woman Injured in Presho Hunting Accident,” Mitchell Daily Republic, 2017.11.15].

No charges have been filed yet against the gun.

South Dakota’s hunting regulations forbid using a motor vehicle “to chase, harass, intercept, pursue or disturb big game.” I’m curious how scouting might fit into that list, and whether it’s still scouting when you are pursuing deer in a motor vehicle with a loaded rifle at your side.

Our hunting regs require that anyone carrying a gun on a snowmobile, motorcycle, or all-terrain vehicle unload and stow the weapon in a carrying case. Instead of attending the Lynne DiSanto School of Car-Gun Safety, in which Rule #1 is, Don’t use the safety!, our hunter friend should have applied the logic of our hunting regs for other motorized transportation to her own bouncing motor vehicle.

Backward iowa makes people unload their guns before getting in a vehicle and guns must be fully encased and zipped up or broken down like single shot or double barrel shotguns.(3 pieces)

Like I said, we be backwards.

Sigh. She is “lucky” that the only thing that was injured was her foot. Her husband is lucky also. She wasn’t “indexing”. Which means, she had her finger on the trigger while she was holding the gun. A HUGE no-no. Police officers have to go through rigorous training and multiple qualifications every year to “allow” them to carry their weapons on duty. If they don’t qualify? They are riding the desk until they do. Training and qualifications for regular gun toting citizens? Non existent. This has been and always will be a problem.

Guns in America. Every day I just shake my head.

She probably had to pass some Hunter Safety course in order to get a license to hunt. (unless grandfathered in) The courses cover safety and safe handling of weapons. But the heat of the moment pervades even the most experienced. Maybe she had a Remington Model 700 rifle-one of the most iconic and dangerous rifles ever made.

I’m guessing NRA bought and paid for legislators will try to ban pickups so this doesn’t happen again.

No deer were injured in this unfortunate accident.

Only kids need to pass the hunter safety course, I’m assuming she is an adult, as such it is possible she has never attended or passed a hunter safety course.

In iowa- Iowa hunting laws and regulations: Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972, needs a hunter safety course to buy a hunting license.

I was grandfathered in at age 19.

I teach the Hunt Safe class in Spearfish. We go over the hunting accidents in SD, of which there are 50-60 per year. They are not “accidents”. Invariably someone is doing something illegal and or plain stupid.
I hope Mike from Iowa is being facetious.

Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Monkeys kill people too, if they’ve got guns.

South Dakota laws are different from Iowa laws.

Was I being facetious about pickup trucks? I hear from many on the right that more people die in car accidents than by guns so why not ban autos?

Because autos, when used as designed do not kill people. Guns were designed to kill- especially humans.

I see that Nick Nemec. Since I don’t have a Hunter Safety Certificate, how would that hinder me getting a hunting license in your state?

Mr. Reifenrath, it is unfortunate that they don’t have more like you in Iowa. But it is, of course, just Iowa.

Lack of a hunter Safety Certificate would not hinder you in SD since you are an adult and adults don’t need the hunter safety certificate to get a hunting license in SD.
