Sadly, Noem Refuses to Debate Smith on SDPB

Who's afraid of South Dakota Public Broadcasting? Kristi Noem, chicken.
Who’s afraid of South Dakota Public Broadcasting?

Democratic candidate for governor Jamie Smith is ready to have lots of debates, but coast-to-coast campaigner Kristi Noem is refusing to debate Jamie Smith on public television:

“I think that’s just sad for the people of South Dakota,” Smith said Wednesday night. “We would welcome more debates, of course, and would like to get our message out to more people and allow voters to make informed decisions.”

A spokesman for Noem’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for further comment Thursday.

The campaign’s one debate will be co-hosted by Dakota News Now and KOTA/KEVN on Sept. 30 in Rapid City. Noem declined a debate invitation from South Dakota Public Broadcasting [Slater Dixon, “Democratic Challenger Criticizes Noem’s Decision to Participate in Only One Debate,” SDPB Radio, 2022.07.14].

As we noted yesterday, incumbent Governors Dennis Daugaard and M. Michael Rounds debated their Democratic opponents on public television. Noem is lying when she says she is following the precedent of past governors; the only precedent she is following is her own precedent, established back in 2010, of chickening out of debates with smarter, more articulate, more public-service-minded candidates.

Update 08:49 CDT: Team Noem hilariously justifies its debate dodging this morning by saying National Public Radio and SDPB have “extreme leftist slant” evidenced by the facts that (1) NPR didn’t recite the Declaration of Independence on July 4 this year and (2) SDPB interviewed Ibram X. Kendi last year.

Noem is gone so much she doesn’t have time to debate

  2. Nick Nemec 2022-07-15 08:30

Given her national asperations she should jump at the chance to sharpen her debate skills in a smaller venue. Practice makes perfect, the minor leagues exist for a reason, to prevent belly flops and face plants in a bigger more critical venue.

Jamie Smith needs to go into this debate with facts, sources and the part time governors own words when it comes to issues. We all know she’s going to tell half truths and flat out lies… he needs to be able to effectively counter her bs with truth and his own position. I would love for those holding the debate to ask for viewer submitted questions and suggestions. And quite honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if an “emergency” or a “situation” comes up and she has to cancel.

  4. 96Tears 2022-07-15 08:38

Too chicken to debate at home where people know Noem as a lazy, careless bum.

  5. larry kurtz 2022-07-15 08:40

Has Mrs. Noem granted any interviews to Bill Janklow’s idea of public broadcasting at all?

  6. Caroline 2022-07-15 08:41

Can someone please make this picture into a bumper sticker? I would help sell them!!

  7. mike from iowa 2022-07-15 08:57

Pic is a fake. It shows Noem Nothing as a left winger. Even her photo ops are lies.

  8. Guy 2022-07-15 09:14

Kristi Noem has to keep up with her jet-setting trips. Her royal travel is MORE important than wasting her time on us, the serfs of South Dakota.

  9. grudznick 2022-07-15 09:27

I am sure it is probably the leftist slant and libbie bias of the SDPB radicals. She should abolish SDPB by stripping their budget money and giving it to teachers.

  10. WillyNilly 2022-07-15 09:50

I hope that the moderators of the first and only debate will be prepared to cut off Noem’s mike when she rattles on well past the time limit given. Her tactic with most interactions is to open her mouth and keep talking and never give up the floor. She also never answers a question straight on, so that should be called out each time. And I agree, she may opt out at the last minute with no rescheduled debate. She is a vile cowardly thing.

  11. DaveFN 2022-07-15 09:56

Noem and Rhoden are from the old west and seek to appeal to its closet wannabes.

Shoot first and answer questions later if at all.

I am never one to suggest more laws, however, there ought to be a law on the books making it a punishable crime for elected officials to publicly and knowingly lie to the people. Their lies cause further societal decay, as well as insurrections. Their misleading lies render enormous consequences and should be deterred. It is hard to blame people for taking heed to what their president/governor/mayor tells them. Duping people into voting for you is one thing, kind of like a greasy pick-up artist. But, there needs to be consequence to fraud and Gov. Kristi’s cons.

  13. grudznick 2022-07-15 12:18

The cabinet secretary of the public broadcasting had best be watching his or her back, as this empty chair business isn’t going to sit well with the more powerful minions in Governor Noem’s office. Do they not know who they work for, or are they just drunk on libbie hatred?

Grudz and I evidently have the same radio habits. SDPB’s Lori Walsh opened her lunchtime radio program with a response to the Governor’d refusal to debate on SDPB. Walsh has taken pains to sound distinctly not slanted extremely left by subjecting my own appearances on her program to more immediate critique and rebuttal than the claims of SDGOP establishment types. This noon, Walsh sounded forceful and possibly irate. She pointed out that SDPB, the only non-commercial medium in the state dedicated to public service broadcasting, reaches areas of the state not served by other media and is thus one of the most helpful sources for election information. She said SDPB will continue to host candidate debates and interviews. Walsh said that for the gubernatorial debate, SDPB will include an empty chair on set for Governor Noem.

Walsh then read the Declaration of Independence out loud and in full… something I suspect Kristi Noem didn’t do this Fourth of July and probably never has done.

That Declaration of Independence sounded like it had an extreme leftist slant.

Hmmmmm. Governor Debate Dodger went on CNN a couple of weeks ago, and I could have sworn in GOP circles that they are considered ‘left leaning’ and a purveyor of fake news.

Noem/Fury keep serving up campaign statements to Team Smith on a platter.

KOTA and KSFY are ABC affiliates. ABC has broadcast interviews with Ibram Kendi multiple times. ABC produced a televised reading of the Declaration of Independence to celebrate Independence Day in 2001, but I’m not aware of any such broadcast of our founding document on ABC this July 4. Why Noem would agree to appear on extreme leftist ABC but not SDPB escapes me.

CBS had him on Face the Nation just last month, so KELO-TV is out, too.

How does Noem Nothing like her crow? After making the usual fool of herself on tv and then even worse when she lied about 10 yer old rape victim, maybe she should wash crow down with vintage drumpf whine and a slice of humble pie. What a tool!

  18. grudznick 2022-07-15 13:47

Who is this Ms. Walsh’s boss? Is it that young Ms. Overgard lady who has long had a liberal bias or that Mr. Cline fellow who must be more moderate? I suspect they are going to have to answer to the pipers.

We all know this: Pierre was made the capital of South Dakota to be a media desert by design.

There is an exodus of journalists leaving the profession for public relations jobs as the media lurch to drive the message to the extreme right. Bill Janklow’s idea of public broadcasting can’t cover Pierre effectively because its funding is reliant on the South Dakota Republican Party, the Associated Press can’t do it because they’ve been neutered so has the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

South Dakota’s teevee stations are bound to Republican advertisers and nobody reads college publications. I quit following the South Dakota Newspaper Association on twitter because its feed reads like a bulletin from the South Dakota Republican Party. The Pierre Capital Journal is a joke so are the radio stations based in the capital city. Reservation border towns like Pierre have always been influenced by the Klan, John Birch Society, the TEA movement and now by the extreme white wing of the Republican Party.

In 2015 the Center for Public Integrity gave the state an ‘F’ for its culture of corruption and it just keeps getting worse.

  20. Arlo Blundt 2022-07-15 14:38

Grudz–Lori Walsh is quite secure in her career path. She has recently been named a Bush Fellow and her career trajectory is going skyward. She is a very bright young lady. And, in Republican terms, her wonderful family could buy and sell Governor Noem and her supposed ranch. I’m happy she has put her cards on the table and is challenging Mrs. Noem to come forward and be forthright. My bet is, Mrs Noem crawls under the table and stays there through election day.

  21. larry kurtz 2022-07-15 15:00

Noem’s is a clear signal to her donors that she will do anything to raise money even extend the news desert to the tribal nations trapped in South Dakota where public broadcasting is still often the only link to an outside world.

  22. grudznick 2022-07-15 15:04

That is very interesting, Mr. Blundt. With such a wonderful, well-off family you would think a skyrocketing media star would fix her teeth. I’m just sayin…

I don’t think young Ms Walsh will be targeted, I suspect her bosses will probably bear a brunt, Mr. Blundt.

  23. Arlo Blundt 2022-07-15 15:24

Grudz..time and again…when politicians bully and threaten Public Broadcasting, the Public pushes back…I hope Mrs. Noem does threaten Public Broadcasting in South Dakota. It is a Loser’s game.

  24. leslie 2022-07-15 16:59

    1. libbie. 2. radical. 3. hatred. 4. go to the boss. 5. misogynist/chauvinist grdz. 5 posts on a single thread in an afternoon. gee!

no need to debate when media reports her every flip of her hair and coddles her minion pigs.

  25. leslie 2022-07-15 17:13

If SDPBS was serious its anchor wouldn’t have chosen a Vet w/no professional broadcast experience, or training/education, and a goofy laugh betraying her unprofessionalism. But she has brought some tremendous insight and progressive guests, while still coddling the state’s tres el lunaticos (johnson, rounds and thune), like its national counterpart.

Kudos every time we call out the emperor wears no clothes. (don’t get excited grdz, its just an allegory, i guess.)

  26. Guy 2022-07-15 19:26

Grudz, you said this: “I don’t think young Ms Walsh will be targeted, I suspect her bosses will probably bear a brunt, Mr. Blundt.”
I agree with Arlo, it is a “loser’s game.” So, Grudz are you for your Governor being a DICTATOR that BULLIES our Public Broadcasting? Is SDPB supposed to be the Queen’s personal sate-run media mouth piece like Putin expects from his Russian Media? Does the phrase “empty chair” hurt your feelings? Do you feel the phrase “empty chair” hurts the Queen’s ego?

  27. Guy 2022-07-15 19:30

From what I hear, Kristi Noem’s office chair in Pierre could use some dusting-off. Maybe they could bring that “empty chair” into the SDPB studios during the debate? That’s the most use it will ever get since Kristi hardly uses it since she is gone most of the time sitting in fancy chairs paid by high-end fundraising dollars in California, Florida, Texas and New York City.

  28. grudznick 2022-07-15 20:06

Mr. Guy, you are clearly fogged with libbie rage or misreading grudznick.

    I did say:

I don’t think young Ms Walsh will be targeted, I suspect her bosses will probably bear a brunt, Mr. Blundt.

I did not say I was FOR any dictatoring or bullying, I stated what I suspect will happen. Even here grudznick gets to voice my opinion on what might happen, even if it rousts your goat, and even here I get to keep my opinion on what I think should happen or what I want to happen to myownself. Until I chose not to.

So try and read better between what I’m saying might happen and what I want to happen, eh? If you’d just sit down to a breakfast with me I’m sure we’d find we’re very similar fellows.

  29. larry kurtz 2022-07-15 21:05

Earth haters like Noem stage these stunts just to watch our heads twist off then laugh all the way to the bank.

  30. Guy 2022-07-15 21:27

    Whatever floats your boat…Grudz….

  31. buckobear 2022-07-16 06:25

Our own KKK. Kowardly Kowgirl Kristi.

  32. Ray Tysdal 2022-07-16 16:19

Existential Quiz: If SDPB leaves an empty chair on stage for NOEM as a no-show and she suddenly shows up is the chair still empty?

  33. Guy 2022-07-16 23:01

Yeah, Buckobear, the Queen Chicken. I’m beginning to think that not only Jamie Smith scares the hen, but, the hen is scared of her own shadow. A shadow of incompetence.

Empty chairs and gals in chicken suits—coming soon to a “Kristi for Governor” rally near you!

  35. Guy 2022-07-17 23:38

Cory, that’s one hell of a creepy, but, hilarious picture to paint! LOL!!!!!

  36. Bonnie B Fairbank 2022-07-18 07:30

    It IS creepy, Guy.
I just hope that’s a Halloween costume photo, because what’s with the dismembered SKELETON IN THE BACKGROUND?

  37. leslie 2022-07-19 12:50

Is this where the nut of the political crises lies, and Kristi is in bed with it?

ever trying to dig out of the trees for an overall view of the forest, i note:

“committed Christians must do all they can to defeat—school by school, board by board, state by state—this secularist ideology that threatens everyone. Former Attorney General William Barr must be commended for spelling out the problem so succinctly.” Slimey Bill Barr.

    Yet again this month:

“ground zero for [] attacks on religious liberty occurs in the public school system by adopting a curriculum incompatible with traditional religious principles or mandating—in some states—LGBTQ+ lesson plans without parental consent of the child.” …he thanked the current Supreme Court’s adherence to the original Constitution and believes it’s a moment in history to address the existential national crisis by ending the government monopoly over the education system that pushes transgender and anti-white racism ideologies, The Federalist reported.

… he could not see a way out and the way for Christian citizens to live in peace in this republic until the educational system is addressed.”

In 1858, the American Medical Association (AMA), led by Horatio Storer, launched a crusade to end abortion across the country. Prior to this period, abortion was legal in all U.S. states. Storer and white male physicians not only wanted to push women midwives — often Black, indigenous and immigrant women — out of the newly developing medical profession, but also had another, more sinister aim: these men wanted white male Protestants to politically control the country.

They feared that the growing number of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Germany and other largely Catholic countries, whom they viewed as separate and distinct “races,” would produce more babies and usurp the political dominance of white Protestant Anglo-Saxon men. The reproduction of Black women, the majority of whom were enslaved at that time, was controlled by systems of white supremacy, and was not seen as a threat. https://www.salon.com/2022/07/19/abortion-and-guns-how-supremacy-unites-the-right/
