70% of us voting to legalize medical marijuana last November didn’t stop Governor Kristi Noem from blasting our vote as wrongheaded and throwing roadblocks in the way of making therapeutic cannabis available in South Dakota. I thus have to wonder what polling she’s reading now that’s persuading her to baldfacedly lie about her longstanding opposition to all things cannabinoidal:
“I think there’s people that have misconstrued my position on medical marijuana,” Noem said. “For years, I’ve said I’ve supported medical marijuana” [Bridget Bennett, “Governor Noem: ‘For Years, I’ve Said I’ve Supported Medical Marijuana’,” KELO-TV, 2021.06.24].
Bennett doesn’t let that whopper go unchecked:
It’s a very different message from the commercials she appeared in before the November 3rd election, campaigning against the effort to legalize marijuana in the state.
“I’m urging all South Dakotans to vote no on legalizing marijuana this November,” Noem said in a commercial that aired ahead of the 2020 election [Bennett, 2021.06.24].
Noem opposed South Dakota’s medical marijuana initiative a year before it went before the voters. She fought non-smokable, non-medicinal industrial hemp just because it looks like marijuana and because she thought it would lead to legalizing recreational marijuana. When Noem was campaigning for Governor in 2018, she said, “As governor, I will oppose all attempts to legalize marijuana.”
And in 2009, when Noem was serving the South Dakota Legislature, she had a chance to support two bills that would have given allows South Dakotans to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. 2009 House Bill 1127 would have created a cannabis cardholder system similar to what we enacted with Initiated Measure 26, while 2009 House Bill 1128 would have allowed individuals arrested for use or possession of marijuana to invoke medical reasons as a defense. Then-Representative Noem did not sponsor those bills.
Despite Governor Noem’s long-standing opposition, medical marijuana becomes legal in South Dakota on Thursday. You probably won’t notice much more haze in the air, since Kristi is already smoking up the joint with her flaming pants.
Governor Noem has supported Medical Cannabis, but it was always with some pretty stringent (conservative) caveats.
I used to think that the Dope Queen of Delusion was just a makeup caked cowgirl with crap on both her boots and her lips.
But , I’m pretty sure that our Governor is an Automaton.
Lewandowski must have switched a couple of wires around and BOOM !
Now our robot is saying something very
Different from what she really believes.
Do you seriously think that she now supports IM26 and Amendment A ?
Nope.
Our Automaton has been reprogrammed
with Lewandowski at the controls.
Drunk with visions of National recognition
Noem would blow the Don if she thought it would help her.
You can take that to the bank.
I wish the reporter from kelo would have called noem out immediately rather than letting her feel like she pulled another fast one. In what words or actions has noem ever shown support for medical cannabis? Nuthin.
No John, Noem has never supported medical maryjane. Don’t just write it, prove it.
Noem must know someone, perhaps a relative, who needs medical marijuana for an ailment or two. Or maybe she finally realized 70% is a HIGH number of voters, especially with an election on the horizon. Or she could have gotten a whiff of some skunk weed on one of her escapades. I haerd she loves an earthy, musky smell, it reminds her of hunting. Maybe she knows it’s all about to become legal on a federal level so it’s not worth fighting anymore. For goodness sakes, not just Democrats smoke the stuff, look at John Boehner. How do you think he mellowed over the years? Most of his peers are just grumpy old white men who whine and complain. But not John, since he discovered the love drug, he even likes Obama.
Noem changed her mind for purely political reasons to benefit her future.
“Medical” MJ is hokum. Codswallop. Hoodoo. Demon weed is demon weed, and at the first gas-station hold-up by a wild-eyed card holder I will point it out again.
She opposes 70% of the voters. She’s a wannabe dictator. A trumpeter. Republican base is eroding daily, even in South Dakota.
How long can a House of lies last?
anybody see the kelo story with the “tour” of the Flandreau grow op / dispensary? These fellows have plants that look like they’ve been growing for months. Now… how in the world did they pull that off, considering it’s not even July 1 yet (first head scratcher) and also considering no businesses are licensed to operate as cannabis establishments (second head scratcher)? The next head scratcher will be how are they going to comply with IM26’s rules for tracking all sales from seed to retail sale when there is no such tracking system…
I look forward to our idiot governor and our idiot state legislators continuing to do their best impressions of a white tailed doe staring down the barrel of my pickup’s halogens.
John, pull some quotes. Show me examples prior to this month of State Representative or Congresswoman or Governor Noem saying she supports medical marijuana. Show me examples of Noem doing something to promote the use of medical marijuana rather than standing in the way of any offered proposal.
Ryan, I suspect the Attorney General was too busy keeping himself out of prison to mount any sort of investigation of grow-ops in Flandreau or anywhere else.
Here’s the KELO-TV report to which Ryan refers—hey! That looks like that vertical farming I mentioned yesterday! Grow your medical cannabis indoors, use less land and water, control the light and temperature for better yields—better living through technology!
On Noem’s fake support: she hasn’t done anything to speed the process along or provide clarity for medical marijuana users who make seek relief from the products the Flandreau growers offer starting Thursday. She just whines about there being lots of confusion but leaves everyone in limbo. I wish she’d trade in her flaming liar pants for boss pants and put her “support” into real practice through executive orders clarifying how the state will deal with medical marijuana users when the product becomes legal but the state continues to drag its feet on implementing the details. Kristi’s lack of planning and distraction with her Presidential campaign is no excuse for denying the will of the people.
For 11 years, the only job Kristi has done is campaigning for office.
Kristi Noem lies like a Trump.
I just noticed something in the kelo article I missed the first time I glanced at it. Not only do they show plants that appear to have been growing for a month or more, they also show a picture with a bunch of “pre-rolls” which are joints rolled or packed by the grower/seller so the end user doesn’t have to go through all that effort! This means they have already grown, harvested, cured, and trimmed some plants. That means they planted seeds or clones in like, January or February at the latest. Hmmmm….
Cryin’ Ryan – Obama legalized marijuana on Indian reservations years ago. SD sued them and stopped their initial attempt at retail but nothing stops them from cultivating.
“There’s just so much science to all of it,” Rep. Fred Deutsch, R-Florence, told the Argus Leader following the tour of Med Pharm Iowa’s cultivation, extraction and dispensary operations in Iowa’s capital city. “I had no idea.”
BTW, since Rep. Deutsch is the one who constantly comes up with legislation trying to make gays and transgenders illegal. Perhaps he should study the science of that as well. And climate change. And women’s reproductive system.
porter, having you around is like losing three good men. I think cannabis should be legal everywhere. I am not cryin’ about anything. I want the flandreau folks to be successful and I want noem to cry herself to sleep every night because she is useless and because she has to be closer to all the fart-sniffing coloradans than most other SD residents.
Not only are your attempted insults as impotent as my governor, you’re just plain wrong. Obama didn’t legalize nuthin nowhere. He announced that sovereign tribes should actually get to take advantage of their sovereignty and make their own rules about cannabis. Smart move, in my opinion. My questions in this thread about the tribe’s dispensary in flandreau are not suggesting they shouldn’t operate, I am just inquiring as to the process and timing. Seems like they tried to grow and sell pot a few years ago but they caved when the state came knocking. I’m curious what changed, either in their minds or in reality. I expect you to have no helpful insight, as is tradition, so feel free to sit this one out. You’ll be busy soon, i imagine… one of your neighbors is surely cooking up some fake mexican food with lots of beans for you to whiff on. When I recently visited your state, all the boxer shorts at the underwear store had holes in the front and the back. Is that for easier fart sniffing access or something else entirely?
If you’re explaining, you’re losing bryan.
Quit picking on Indians and explore your inner racism. We all see it.
porter you used to live in SD didn’t you? When you left, you raised the IQ of this state and yours. What a feat.
So my support for the success of the flandreau dispensary is picking on indians? your fart sniffing cult must believe in reincarnation because there is no way you became this stupid in just one lifetime.
Ryan, From December 12, 2014:
“In a completely unexpected move by the Obama Administration, the US Department of Justice released a memo on October 28 indicating to Native American tribes that they can engage in cannabis commerce–cultivation, processing and retail sales–as long as they comport with the existing eight rules put forward in a previous August 2013 Obama Administration memo allowing states the autonomy to develop cannabis-based businesses in states where voters have passed binding ballot initiatives or elected policymakers have passed reform legislation.”
Porter is right.

Eve,
Read porter’s quote and my quote again, but slower.
Porter said, “Obama legalized marijuana on Indian reservations years ago.” Is that accurate? Nope.
I said “He [Obama] announced that sovereign tribes should actually get to take advantage of their sovereignty and make their own rules about cannabis.” Is that accurate? Yup.
Ryan – Your fart obsession isn’t healthy. No wonder you hide from others. I think you’re weird. Here’s why.

Oh grudz, thank you for the laugh. I really want to see that hold up, they would race away at 25 miles an hour.
porter, the amount of time you spend failing to measure up to me is incredible. it’s your life’s work, and you do it so poorly. Can you please explain to the class why you feel the need to lie about the great and powerful obama just to try to insult me? It’s uncool, and unwoke of you.
Good one, Mark.
Cory, what’s up with this political billionaire donating to fund a South Dakota National Guard Deployment to the Border? I do not find this ethical or legal at all! I once served in the National Guard and I don’t approve of this as a taxpayer. I have two questions: if she did not receive the donation would Governor Noem have deployed the South Dakota Guard to the border? My second question is: Was it a general donation or did this political donor actually express their desire for the border mission to the governor?
It’s funny as all heck, Mr. Guy. You know the young lady Governor probably just does this kind of stuff to stir you fellows up.
She may do this “stuff to stir” people up, but, it still does NOT make it right. Governor Noem explicitly stated this “new deployment” was being funded by a “private donation.” Yep, those were HER words this morning.
Better than it being funding by my, and perhaps your tax dollars, Mr. Guy. Right or not, grudznick thinks young Ms. Noem does this stuff just to get amusement out of libbies and bleeding hearts. Plus in this case it’s putting some cash in the pockets of some of our young service men and letting them experience a Texas summer and maybe ride in boats and drive jeeps and things.
It is probably just fine.
She’s not smart enough to have an ulterior motive for anything.
She’s just mean spirited like grudznick and the SD hicks eat it up like lefse at Christmas.
Mmmmm. Lefse.
Whether it can be proven that there was influence from the donor over the border deployment mission really does not matter in this case. JUST THE APPEARANCE that there could have been illegal and unethical influence over our Governor’s decision to deploy the South Dakota National Guard does NOT look good. You never want to make decisions that give a hint of shady and corrupt behavior. In this case, the APPEARANCE of cronyism is there, whether it actually exists or not or can not be proven.
Is this donor from Rapid City?
I read that the donor is a billionaire from Tennessee and he made the donation through his nonprofit organization. He’s also reportedly a huge GOP Political Donor. The next questions will be: Did he ever donate to Governor Noem’s past political campaigns? See what I mean about the APPEARANCE of all this, whether anything unethical or illegal actually happened or can be proven?
Well, let us face it all. It wasn’t illegal, obviously, for the young Governor lady to send her armies wherever she wants. It wasn’t illegal for some rich fellow from Tennessee to donate some money. But it does bug some people like crickets in their hat to have fellows trying to keep the illegal immigrants from flooding into the sister state of the Lone Star. The real itch isn’t the money, it’s the border crossers. Ennit?
They’re not illegal immigrants. They’re fully legal asylum seekers. Goat gotten.
Yes, it is her decision to mobilize the National Guard. But, there are several unanswered questions that are swirling around out there: Was her decision to mobilize the Guard influenced in any way by this “private donation”? Was the donor at all privy to discussions over the Guard Mobilization? Did the donor have any input in any open or private discussions about the Guard Mobilization? Has the donor ever donated money to any of Governor Noem’s political campaigns? We really need answers to these questions. They are legitimate questions that warrant answers. I’m reading a lot of comments from concerned South Dakota citizens that express suspicions over possible “unethically” and possible “illegal” influence over decisions involving our National Guard.
Noem is walking back her SDNG donation claims: https://www.southdacola.com/blog/2021/06/many-are-questioning-the-legality-of-noem-putting-the-sdng-out-for-hire/
Of course she is “walking back” her SDNG donation claims. She can “walk them back” until the sun doesn’t shine tonight. However, the questions remain unanswered and we need answers. “Walking backwards” is not sufficient, it only risks falling down.
So, IF….the “political donation” is now not paying for the South Dakota National Guard Border Mobilization….then who is at this point? Does Governor Noem know where the funding will come from now? Can she explain to us how she is going to fund this without the “political donation”? So, what happened to this “political donation”? Is this “political donation” still in the state coffers? Does Governor Noem know her left foot from her right foot?
Just wait ’til one of Noem’s MAGA Guardsmen illegally kills a refugee and the state gets sued by a powerful civil rights attorney from Washington for … oh, let’s say $250 million American.
…And my burning question still remains unanswered for over 10 years: “We dumped Stephanie Herseth for this woman (Noem)?”
Well..grudz got me to thinking as usual…its another of the governor’s half baked, high profile, blow hard schemes to get on Fox News…as such its no more obnoxious than a lot of her other grand stand shows. It occurs to me that our Guard members may not be prepared for this duty nor did they sign on to the Guard with this in mind. They are mostly Engineers, construction and transportation specialists, I believe. I suppose they could send 50 MPs as I’m sure we have folks with that specialty. They probably all have experience as First Responders. So the plan is we’re going to short our communities 50 emergency responders who are going to Texas to work under the direction of the Texas Governor and his staff and be paid by some guy from Tennesee who says he’s a billionaire. The Governor has declared a State of Emergency in South Dakota which, she says, legally empowers her to impose this imposition on the lives of these fine young men. Have we all gone nuts???
Arlo, I believe the state “went nuts” when we dumped Herseth for Noem.
