Noem Lies About Inviting Aldean to Sioux Falls After Release of Racist Song-Video

Governor Kristi Noem went to Sioux Falls Saturday to pose with fake small-towner and fake-country singer Jason Aldean. She also made the fake claims that (1) Aldean stands for “common-sense American values” and (2) his Sioux Falls concert happened in response to criticism of his latest crappy redneck-poseur song:

Kristi Noem, tweet, 2023.08.19.
Kristi Noem, tweet, 2023.08.19.
  1. Small-town violence and xenophobic small-mindedness are not common-sense American values. They’re just the unseemly chords Aldean willingly plucks to raise the money he needs to pay for his $10.2-million Florida mansion.
  2. “We”—the Governor, the city of Sioux Falls, the people of South Dakota in a statewide vote—did not invite Aldean to perform when “the left” “attacked” his homage to lynching. As more than one Twitter friend points out, Aldean announced Sioux Falls as stop #14 on his 41-city July–October “Desperado” tour in February, more than three months before he released the song in question and five months before he released his white-supremacist video.

Can Kristi Noem not let a single photo opp go by without making stuff up?

Related Contradictions: The vast majority of Aldean’s concert venues are in big cities. I guess if he tried singing in more small towns, he wouldn’t make as much money.

The “Try that in a small town” song is based on a false premise anyway. Nobody would beat you up in South Dakota. Here’s what would happen:

    1. The men are just gonna stare at you and maybe peacock a bit, but he ain’t swinging. “YOU WANNA GO!??!” is where it would stop.
    2. The local bridge club would talk about how terrible you are.

The far right is a weird place. So many dudes think they can fight and have weird LARP fantasies about being some avenging hero.

You really don’t get it do you. Go ahead and bring that Portland,Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago BS to my hometown and report on what happens. It’s more a song about being pushed to the limit of tolerance and understanding.
Playing the racist card when you know absolutely nothing about those you are at the table with is hypocrisy at its worst.

Her daughter is super pretty. I am surprised KN hasn’t snuck lye into her shampoo or tried to sabotage her looks for upstaging her own ma. Speaking of petty, it looks like JA and KN share the same facedresser (plastic surgeon).

Your hatred is showing, the guy sang a song, if you don’t like it don’t listen to it! Just because someone likes a person or a song does not mean she’s the evil person you would like to say she is! Personally I’m sick of all you people trying to make everyone think as you do, get over it, move on and find some good in everyone! Love and let live!

I’m not a fan of Nashville based and produced Country Music. It is strongly derivtive and over produced according a a well worn formula. generally the narrative is a “Muscular Americanism” which sounds like fascism with strings to me.

I would point out that South Dakotan Chris Gage and his wife now live in Austin and are very active in the music scene there, being seen quite often on Austin City Limits. Chris and Christine put out a couple albums a year and their songs are memorable and praise worthy. A few years ago, he released an album “Dakota Lullabye” which was a compilation of songs written by South Dakotan Tom Peterson, who has lived near Spink in Clay County for 30 years. It is excellent and should be in every South Dakota music collection..
Black Hills mainstay Hank Harris writes songs with South Dakota native Jimmy Goins, who is a producer in the Bay Area, and releases excellent albums. His album of a few years ago, “World Beat Cowboy”, with a cover photo of main street Deadwood you’re sure to recognize, is as good as it gets. Hank has played in South Dakota for fifty years.
Boyd Bristow, in Sioux Falls, joins with South Dakota musicians to release original music, in a range of genres, through his Maxine/Audiophile publishing company and studio. His album of a few years back “Cloudless Sky” is stunning…sums up living in the Midwest and is memorable throughout. Boyd also records with East of Westerville, an “Americana” collection of South Dakota musicians and has a compiled a retrospective double album of the songs of Sioux Falls singer/songwriter Dennis Westphal, solo and on guitar with the seminal South Dakota band “Blueberry Buckle.”
All of these works are available on the internet. All are excellent. All express the true South Dakota ethic. I doubt, that Kristi Noem or her staff, have ever heard them.

  18. Arlo Blundt

I would also point out that there are many South Dakota musicians releasing music on local labels and over the internet in South Dakota today. Kenny Putnam, a South Dakota fiddle champion with eclectic tastes, releases work regularly from Rapid City, and Mike Connor and his bandmates in “Mid Life Crises” perform live and release music regularly, (or did)…both artists can be found on the internet…AND there are hundreds of young musicians in South Dakota, who are making unique music with a South Dakota soul. and performing live throughout the state. Support local musicians, and support Live Music created in South Dakota…Governor Noem is not.

We aren’t real Americans until we can stand behind our governers or presidents words and works because that’s who majority votes to represent them to orchestrate the national and local needs is how I look at it and I for one have learned to never trust the government and corruption runs deep when politics and media collaborate its in the form of not if but when that it happens that they realize that it permeates every part of them offices with greed and hate in there hearts that they will never admit to even there gods.but as a forced American citizen will stand by the laws of our lands forefathers of free speech and will not as powerful as words are not let negative naritive taint my mind because I have my own mind to decide that,so I can read, write, listen to anything I wish doesn’t mean I believe In all of it or let it define me as an individual, now if I was to be in a place that affects thousands or millions like our representatives have then I’m sure I would be vigilant of my actions for the greater good know everyone will not be happy with every decision I make or make decisions that i maynot like atleast i would be voicing my people that would be embraced by the majority that the best i could do in the understanding of what leaders do,rite.ok then why is Governor Noem rejecting food for her constituents with a reason being because there’s strings attached to receiving it and why do there have to be strings attached to feeding our children and exactly what strings are they wasn’t mentioned but maybe the majority not the lobiestes would agree ,maybe she holds this position for the lobiests, sounds closed minded to me almost like an agenda playing out that includes our O so beautiful governer along with the decriminalization of medical/recreational Marijuana its a hands down situation that most cannot phathem as to why and in my OPINION is I have to be an agenda that wouldn’t be tolerated by the people, for the people,of the people. I hope you can understand where I’m coming from because in posting this I mean no harm to anyone nor am I apposed to any insight to set me straight on any of my opinions also wasn’t that p-ebt put out so our children didn’t have to travel to a location where groups gathered to prevent the spread of the Carona virus? So put it in our kids backpacks to deliver to the parents and elders ?sounds cruel and heartless as long as there’s is fine why else? But on the other hand why do politicians play as angry greedy children with no fear of any blowback? I’m sorry this is way off track of the news story the dakota free press has printed but this kind of thing spreads and glamorize hatred and greed and I ask as a Christian so population to answer another question how can them people stand for that. I have many more questions to the public to open there minds to wake up to the truth and especially to someone speaking for us because the blowback is way different from class to class . Again sorry thank you for reading

I had grown to love it when Hank Harris played every year at the Spearfish Festival in the Park and was bummed by his absence this year.

  21. Diana tchida

Get over it people and quit calling the Gov a liar because you disagree with her. Don’t listen to the darn song and move on.

  22. Noem Nemesis

One might ask, “How does Aldean reconcile the disgusting lyrics of that revolting vigilante anthem with the cross he wears around his neck?” Well, like Noem, he’s nothing more than a Christian poseur. Shameless hypocrisy is their calling card. In their world, the Golden Rule is for schmucks.

  23. Sandy

Wow! Agree with Noem. She did not lie. South Dakota is made up of “Small Town” USA. This article stretches the truth. The video was not racist nor was it meant to be racist. What was meant was that the riots and looting that go on in big cities would NOT be tolerated in a small town. Nor would the mob robberies and other crap that happens. Small towns know store owners. Small towns know their policemen. They are neighbors and friends. Big cities do not respect businesses or their police. We do NOT tolerate disrespect.

  24. Vile and juvenile insults no logic just hate speech. Bullies stuck with fifth grade bully tactics. Until someone punches you in the nose and you go screaming to your mommy. Which is not far as most of you live just downstairs in her basement.

  25. Note that Lee’s comment is mere insults, no logic or evidence. Whether Lee lives in a basement, a condo, an RV, or a mansion is irrelevant.

  26. Sandy ignores Noem’s plain lie: we did not invite Aldean after his racist song came out and drew criticism.

  27. I don’t call Noem a liar because I disagree with her. I call her a liar because her tweet about inviting Aldean after he drew criticism for his racist song is a lie.

  28. Joseph, the video features a courthouse where white men lynched a black man. It’s racist.

  29. grudznick

grudznick does not listen to that sort of music, but I had to go read the lyrics that my granddaughter’s boyfriend showed me. They make total sense. Ms. Sandy is righter than right in her take on this song. Mr. H is questionable in his interpretation of what “we invited…” might be construed. Sometimes, it’s just leaving the door open for people to enter. Mr. H is just picking nits to vent a little NDS before his head explodes. :-)

  30. grudznick

Where do you see the movie about this song?

  31. Jake Kammerer

Cory, “small towns” of course breed many “small minds” here in South Dakota, and the evidence is paramount in their responses and defense (as usual) of racism in our state.. Just like their support and defense of their god-head with the orange hair and big mouth (with an open wallet for their hard-earned $$$!)-which they seem to freely give up for him, but ask for a little support (tax) for those less fortunate-“Oh God No”! FREEDOM!

  32. Jenny

Kind of like the Nesiba Derangement Syndrome you have, Grudzie?

But Cory, nobody is ever racist in their small town! What’s a little fun and kiddin’ anyways!
Come on, you people! Small town America can have the same problems as bigger cities – drug and alcohol addiction, child abuse and domestic violence, human trafficking and plenty and plenty of racisim. There were many small town Trumpies attacking the Capital on Jan 6th. Enough with the pretending.

  33. grudznick

Mr. Nesiba is a fine, and polite, young fellow, Ms. Jenny. I have great, manly affection for Mr. Nesiba.

  34. e platypus onion

Magats are delusional deplorables. Riots and looting in small towns is likely to be caused by white magats upon seeing a person of color in their white enclave and they would likely shoot on sight because they misinterpret the 2nd amendment as a license to kill non whites.

Magats know they will soon be a minority in a country they stole from earlier inhabitants who weren’t intersted in raping the land of all wealth for personal gain.

Play Aldean’s racist video backward and I would bet it names Goatzilla as the antichrist with a fetish for imaginary goats.

  35. (A) I have made clear since I started blogging in 2005 that my articles include opinion. I make no pretense to the contrary.

    (B) My full name is displayed prominently under the headline. Commenter “Merrie” does not do us the same courtesy.

    (C) It is fact, not opinion, that Aldean’s concert in Sioux Falls was announced in February and did not result from any invitation extended by anyone in South Dakota subsequent to the release of his racist song and video and the criticism that song and video received.

    (D) Where I went to school has no bearing on the reality of that fact, or the fact that Noem unnecessarily lied to state a political opinion that could have been made more effectively without her lie. But for what it’s worth, I have degrees from SDSU and DSU.

  36. John, I do get it. The song implies that small-town conformity and violent responses to political opponents are acceptable. The video features a courthouse where white men lynched a black man. Your turn of phrase about playing a card at a table is irrelevant to the content of the song and the video. We know all about Jason Aldean: he’s a big-city boy amking his millions by pretending to be a country boy and tapping the regressive impulses of rural America.

  37. “Woke” is an overused term. It also ignores the fact that Noem lied about the timeline of “inviting” Aldean to Sioux Falls. No such summer invitation took place.

  38. sx123

Try That in a Small Town promotes vigilante responses. Like everyone in a small town except the bad guys is “The Punisher.”

It should be fine to speak out against the song if mad moms can get angry at schools for having certain books (that they don’t agree with) in the library and have them removed or the librarian goes to jail. Lunacy.

Free(ish) country. People can bash this song if the want just like people can bash a beer can.

  39. Richard Schriever

Arlo Blundt, another small town (Lennox) SD guy who is a great songwriter/singer is one “Johnny Delaware” (John Kuyper) with his South Carolina-based band “The Artisanals”. https://maximumvolumemusic.com/review-the-artisanals-zia-2021/

Some will remember John as an extremely good HS distance runner.

Some other very talented SD musicians include Mark Craney, who drummed for Jethro Tull, Gino Vanelli and others. Mike Miller currently the guitarist for Boz Scaggs and has performed with Chick Corea, Bette Midler, Yellowjackets, Brand X, Burton Cummings, Vinnie Colaiuta, Quincy Jones, Gino Vannelli. Both from Sioux Falls, and both in the 1950’s neighbors of nine. Jeff Severson, guitarist from Madison, SD who has been indicted into music halls of fame in Iowa, Kansas and SD and was a member of the most popular band ever to come from the Washington, DC area, 4 out of 5 Doctors.

What do all of the players you mentioned above, and these others have in common? Residents of small town Vermillion, SD in the 1970’s.

  40. Richard Schriever

BTW over the past decade crime, and especially violent crime, in rural America has achieved higher per capita rates than in urban America – consistently.

  41. Richard Schriever

The random person you encounter in a small town is more likely to be a criminal. to a random person you encounter in a big city.

  42. Tim

It appears that the truth has struck a nerve with the nut jobs, much in the same way the truth affects them when it applies to their orange god. I’m shocked they actually read Cory’s blog, it’s packed full of truth. And yes people, our governor has struggled with the truth for years now.

  43. grudznick

Mr. Schriever, one might argue it’s because of The Punisher sort of fellows becoming more prominent, due to the anger over all the mess Ms. Hillary started.

  44. 96Tears

It’s tired, imitative, third rate and unmemorable tune that didn’t track on the charts until … and this is important part for Trump cultist crybabies on this thread … it was set in a highly racist and violent video that is unforgivable. If you approve of this video you are a latent or confirmed racist. Most importantly, you are unAmerican.

  45. Arlo Blundt

Yes, Mr.. Schriever,, I lived, worked, and “studied” in Vermillion from ’65 to ‘ 74, saw and was entertained by the musicians you mentioned and agree with your assessment. I was a bit older than Craney thouigh I knew his brother, a world traveler well, and was always in awe of the mastery of Zero Ted. The correspondents criticisms of small towns is correct. Still a great place to live and raise kids. I have never heard the song in question “Try to Get Away With That in a Small Town”, and hope I’m never forced to.

    This is what happens:

This is the political “party” Noem, Rounds, Johnson and Thune have staked their ankle chains to. To TRUMP’s ORBIT. Serving the public? Not on your life.

“…the tropical refuge of Kenneth J. Chesebro, a [small town WI, Harvard educated, born 1966] lawyer who allegedly marshaled supporters of President Donald Trump to pose as electors in states won by Joe Biden in 2020, creating a pretext for Vice President Mike Pence to delay counting or disregard valid electoral college votes on Jan. 6, 2021.

…Chesebro, 62, has kept a low profile. He decamped to Puerto Rico [https://dailycaller.com/2021/01/17/wealthy-americans-puerto-rico-federal-income-tax-haven/ ]
from New York last year, and some friends said he’d fallen out of touch. A prominent law firm issued no public announcement last year when it tapped him to run a new department and added no mention of him to its website.

… friends said his politics seemed to shift after he reaped sizable returns from his investments in cryptocurrency in the past half-decade. He began to stake out more-libertarian positions in legal briefs, especially in his home state of Wisconsin, where he started donating to Republicans and working with a former judge, Jim Troupis, who Chesebro would later testify under oath had brought him into Trump’s orbit.”

Of course there is this small town farm family gun nut: NV lawyer Stewart Rhodes. https://apnews.com/article/oath-keepers-founder-jan-6-trial-4372b311695c401255c6881111ff4f41

  49. grudznick

Or were you a Char Bar guy, bouncing your checks at nickel night?

  50. P. Aitch

GRUDZ has me confused with The Guru Mike Gruendyke. P. Of the Aitch has always had AAA credit and paid cash for all libations.

  51. Arlo Blundt

Grudznick–Vermillion didn’t have liquor by the drink until about 1960 when the Char opened. It was a rather typical Liquor Lounge of the era, decorated in black and red, but it had great food in the restaurant and bar…basic but tasty steaks, shrimp, and chislic….very good chislic. I lived across the street from Cariy’s and knew Russ and Joe well, as I dined on pickled eggs every noon for years. I was never kicked out but, once in graduate school, after being a loyal occupant for 4 years, I bounced a check. ($10)..Russ called me at work in Yankton and instructed me to cover the check by midnight, same day. When I did I thought I might get a break…but no, Russ pointed at the wall above the cash register next to the portrait of George Wallace, and there was my name, a new addition to the extensive list of customers who had bounced checks, an Honor Roll of deadbeats, and I was forever, “cash only”.

  52. Arlo Blundt

Pardon me, in an earlier post, about South Dakota musicians, I said songwriter Tom Peterson lived in Spink County…advanced age does strange things to me. Tom lives near Spink, a village in Clay County (maybe north Union).

  53. All Mammal

It is imperative I repeat Mr. Newland’s comment from a couple of weeks ago on the topic of Jason Aldean’s lousy imitation of what he thinks good music is. No finer words were ever hearsaid and respoke.

Ethan Hawk said that Kris Kristofferson told Toby Keith that he did to country music what pantyhose did to fingerf—ckin.

If Jason Aldean is such a badass, why didn’t he try taking responsibility for getting his fans evacuated in an orderly manner at his Las Vegas concert? Why did he run off stage like a little puss while a gunman killed 60 and wounded over 400 people marooned? He could have been brave and at least shouted where to escape in an orderly fashion or to hit the deck or what direction the bullets were coming from, etc. before he left them hanging to be picked off.

He ain’t tough. He’s a black-face wearing, hair blow drying, confederate flag draped jellyfish. Oh, and he’s a home wrecker. And KN is as racist as they come. She needs to quit welcoming punks to SD. We got too many kids going hungry for her to show her Rocky Dennis face enjoying being white.

what Newland said. Privileged assh*le in cowboy hat.

    You nailed her😉🤪

  57. Bonnie B Fairbank

I was going to say something vicious and snarky about aholes wearing ridiculous cowboy hats, but it seemed too trivial and off topic at the time. Aldean even has a line of precious, precious cowboy hats. ‘Mericans are getting dumber every day.

  58. Noem Nemesis

Cory Heidelberger was simply working from a factual basis in noting that Aldean’s appearance in Sioux Falls was not––as Noem plainly implied––induced by her support of his vile song and invitation to perform in South Dakota. Further, when it comes to the expression of his opinions, Heidelberger has never pretended to be neutral. Certainly, he has articulated many unfavorable opinions of Kristi Noem that are predicated on facts, but he does not confuse his opinions with fact. That being said, it is worth noting that many reasonable South Dakotans––admittedly, not enough––have legitimate reservations about Noem’s character and competence. Worse, her avoidance of the state media and public––beyond spouting components of her hoary “Freedom” sermon on conservative national media outlets––means she needn’t bother with accountability. [If anybody can remember when Noem last answered an unscripted question, please let me know.] And without an informed pubic, the concept of democracy is a joke, which is why Cory is not alone in thinking the Noem administration is also a joke.

  59. All Mammal

    P. Aitch and epo- I checked out that song and it physically made me feel a sort of way that makes me want to grab up my dogs and run as far from those hills that petulant, redheaded crybaby is tantrumming out in as fast as I can. These crybaby whiteboys are going to stomp and freak out over their country not giving them their privilege and women/black slaves like they believe they’re entitled to.

Good grief someone needs to give that man a bottle and tell him, GO PEE. GO BED!

  60. Dicta

I am absolutely cackling at a woman coming on this hallowed internet site to ask us to “Love and let live” when we complain about a song that threatens violence. Irony is dead because the earth is filled with morons.

  61. Jet Johnson

Good God this one got some small town hicks up in arms. Seems like a lot of people new to DFP are on here posting. The song is trash. Part of this anti-“woke” mind virus that has infected the right wing in this country. Now, conservatives view these dolts as the paragons of masculinity. Piercings, frosted tips, absolutely no neck to speak of, skinny jeans, jewelry and accessories, these are the hallmarks of the American conservative fake tough guy. Somehow. Like, if you stole your style from NSync circa 1999, you are probably a small town conservative in 2023.

Plus, I hate to break it to the fake tough guys here, but I would absolutely try any of those things in a small town because I grew up in a small town in SD and am fully aware that this is all just right-wing posturing and that all of these guys are actually huge sissies who drive lifted trucks to compensate for the fact that they’re emasculated little babies.

  62. leslie

  65. Algebra

I read the lyrics to the song to try to find the racism. At no point in the song are the victims and perpetrators of the different offenses identified as being of any particular ethnicity.

If you listen to the song and the mental images you see are white victims and black perps, that’s your racist mind at work..Nobody else’s. Do you have to see a music video showing black victims and white perps to get this through your thick skulls?
If you think the song is about white victims and black perps, you are the racist. Take the plank out of your own eye before complaining about the speck of sawdust in somebody else’s. (Gospel of Matthew 7:3)

  66. Fran

KN, or should I say Drumpf wannabe, is a JOKE. She’s hilarious. Only someone of her ilk could be elected to “govern” a most corrupt state. You can’t make this stuff up. It’s hilarious.
