Flowers: Republicans Need to Choose Democracy and Law over Trumpism

Former Democratic South Dakota legislator Charlie Flowers writes from Iroquois that he hopes Republicans will listen to candidates like Chris Christie and nominate someone who isn’t a menace to democracy and the rule of law [I add links to Charlie’s letter to the editor]:

I saw on the news that former President Trump is facing a 37-count indictment for withholding classified documents from the National Archives. According to the indictments, some of the documents deal with our national defense and could be devastating if gotten into the wrong hands.

Trump claims he is innocent of all the charges. I believe he also claimed innocence in over 4,000 lawsuits, six bankruptcies, and paying off porn stars. I have also heard statements of his being a good businessman. Maybe there is a difference between good business and intentionally cheating people, which is indicated by his track record in business.

Republican Congressmen are lining up to defend Trump. Also most of the Republican candidates for President are defending Trump. Apparently they are more concerned about the court of public opinion than the court of law.

FACTS MATTER.

I would hope the Republicans will run a candidate who supports our democracy and laws instead of one who wants to destroy both.

That the party of Earth haters still embraces the orange Julius should come as a shock to no one but if they want to replace his assets they should be considering the .308 solution.

…some local jurisdictions and states that have seen reductions in lethal force. California, the most populous state, has experienced a 29% drop in killings since 2013, while Texas, with the second-largest population, has seen a 30% increase in that timeframe, according to Mapping Police Violence.

While there have been growing calls to defund police, leaders of both political parties have advocated the opposite – pushing for the expansion of law enforcement, she* said:

“There’s a continual commitment to using violence to control people and manage problems in this country. And as we keep giving police more money and power, we’ll continue to see more police violence.”

imo we have a “killing” culture rather than a law enforcement culture. Cops are trained to kill from day one. Killing training, indoctrination,—official violence rather than behavior management—must be replaced with a new paradigm, if we are to live in a civilized society.

The likes of Mr “Photo Op” Thune, or “Main Street” Johnson ought to be writing these sentiments instead of hiding under their desk. They certainly can’t be afraid of losing their seat here in ruby red SD. I mean, they would have the backing of such conservative stalwarts as Judge Michael Luttig or Liz (We are electing idiots!) Cheney!
