To defend Governor Kristi Noem’s illegal use of public funds to needlessly tear a few dozen South Dakota National Guards away from their families to stage another political stunt four states away at the Mexican border, gubernatorial spokesboy Ian Fury cried that “The border is an EMERGENCY.”
Unlawful entries along the southern border have decreased 70% from their record highs since the end of Title 42 on May 11, according the Department of Homeland Security.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has averaged 3,400 encounters in between ports of entry per day and fewer than 300 non-CBP One Office of Field Operations (OFO) encounters at ports of entry per day, for a total of approximately 3,700 unscheduled encounters per day, according to statistics released by DHS Tuesday morning [Luke Barr, “Unlawful Southern Border Entries Down 70% from Record Highs Since End of Title 42,” ABC News, 2023.06.06].
The Biden Administration says, yup, we did that:
In a press release, the Biden administration cited its “execution” of a plan that paired tough consequences for unlawful entry with an expansion of lawful pathways and processes for migrants in the hemisphere.
“Since the CDC’s Title 42 public health Order lifted and the Biden-Harris Administration’s comprehensive plan to manage the border went into full effect on May 12, DHS has continued to experience a significant reduction in encounters at the Southwest Border,” the press release said. “The Administration’s plan is working as intended.”
…Homeland Security broke down the results of its approach, including the effects of the administration’s new asylum ban that bars some migrants from applying for asylum if they cross the border illegally or fail to first apply for safe harbor while crossing through another country on the way to the U.S.
Last month, the Biden administration also returned to expedited removal processes under Title 8, which allows the government to remove from the country anyone unable to establish a legal basis. Removal under Title 8 also bans these migrants from the country for five years [Myah Ward, “As Border Crossings Dip, Biden Admin Crows About the Fiasco That Never Happened,” Politico, 2023.06.06].
The Biden Administration could turn to the Noem Administration and ask, WHAT emergency? But unlike Fury, they don’t need all-capital letters to inflate a counterfactual argument.
Thanks for pointing out the vast decrease in border crossing since Trump’s failed immigration policies were ended. We now have a competent leader at the helm, not one who faked up policies that pretended to be tough, but actually were deficient, and led to massive illegal crossings. Noem’s fake “get tough” policy is for show and a waste of YOUR MONEY. Now that, really, is an EMERGENCY.
The USA border is under complete control of the federal government. If the MAGA states’ rights advocates believe they can intervene in the federal immigration laws than we blue states can intervene, too.
We’d be happy to send buses to pick up “new Americans” and bring them to our worker needy states.
