57% of fellow Earthlings in 16 other countries say we used to be a good example of democracy but have dropped our shining beacon in recent years. Only 23% say we are still a good example of how to do democracy.
We owe it to ourselves, our principles, and future generations everywhere to do better. We need to read (and write!) serious news, switch off distractions and lies, and fight those who would put personality and power above the common good.
Makes Kovid Kristi’s blathering that “our country is THE BEST country that’s ever been on the face of the earth” in danger of being another falsehood. We can and must do a lot better; the people we elect to represent us are a reflection of ourselves to the world.
Our current GOP Republican crop of politicians on a statewide and national scale are interested in power for power’s sake, not for the betterment of society. Conservative Republicans are So afraid of having more people voting they are greatly reducing by new laws (Jim Crow type) that lengthen voting lines and wait times and prevent brown and black people (anything other than white) from voting!

LCJ, I stand on democracy, on the belief in the fundamental dignity of every human being that warrants the full enfranchisement of every human being as a voter in free, fair, and open elections, and on the need for America to exemplify that belief in all of its actions to encourage all other nations to defend dignity and democracy. I read this survey and see we are doing a bad job of exemplifying democracy, are thus giving aid and comfort to dictators and other ill-doers, and thus need to do a better job of showing the world that democracy can work for everyone.
