Cheyenne River Sioux Offering Coronavirus Vaccine to All Adults; State Offers Free Rides to Clinic But Requires Masks

At the bottom of the AP story on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s dismantling of its coronavirus border checkpoints, we learn that our tribal neighbors are beating the State of South Dakota in meeting the President’s goal of making coronavirus vaccines available to all adults by May 1:

There are about 8,600 people who live on the reservation. [Tribal spokesman Remi] Bald Eagle said vaccines obtained through the Indian Health Service are available to tribal and non-tribal members who are age 18 or older [“Tribe Removes Disputed Coronavirus Reservation Checkpoints,” AP, 2021.03.26].

The South Dakota Department of Health has not yet stated when it will move from Phase 1E to Phase 2, vaccine availability for all South Dakota adults. On the good side, DOH is offering free rides to the clinic for folks who have scheduled coronavirus vaccine appointments in Aberdeen, Watertown, Brookings, Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls and folks within 20 miles of those towns. But note: if you want a free ride, you have to wear a mask in the car.

SD DOH requires mask use to get a free ride to the shot clinic? Does the boss know? The horrors! We are being infringed upon.
