Team Noem Not Inclined to Remove Calls for Violent Insurrection from Social Media Account

Seth Tupper puts on his waders and checks out the comments Governor Kristi Noem gets on her Parler account. Tupper finds all sorts of support among Noem’s followers for the violent Trumpist insurrection at the United States Capitol yesterday.

Disgusting, indeed, and the kind of language with which a democratically elected Governor should have no truck.

But Noem and her spokesboy, Ian Fury, seem unwilling to own up to the truck they are driving:

One commenter wrote, “Burn it all down, hang all government officials and congressmen.” Another one said, “This is a natural progression to a much-needed civil war.” There were many similar comments.

Noem’s spokesman, Ian Fury, said he and the governor share control of the Parler account. Fury said the governor does not support the offensive comments.

SDPB asked Fury if he plans to delete the comments.

“I don’t actually know, is that an option on Parler?” he said.

In fact, it is possible to delete comments on Parler.

Fury promised to speak with Gov. Noem about it. Later, he responded with an email. It contained this question: “Is the implication that taxpayer dollars should be spent paying a government staffer to police drivel posted by idiots on the internet?” [Seth Tupper, “Commenters Fill Noem’s Parler Page with Support for Capitol Violence,” SDPB, 2021.01.07]

Reread that: Fury says he and Noem control the Governor’s Parler account. Fury and Noem apparently spend part of their time and thus part of the paycheck we taxpayers are paying them to manage a right-wing social media account. So we’re already paying two government staffers to produce content on that vile channel. But when asked to do the other part of managing a social media account, Fury tries to twist the conversation into another backhanded accusation that the reporter asking a reasonable question is a dope.

Ian, you are managing the social media account of a nationally known elected official. Number 1, you should know the functionality of that platform inside and out before your boss starts using it. Number 2, your boss’s elected office and national image gives commenters on that account much more opportunity to spread their views and foment violence than folks participating on accounts of less prominent private citizens with far less obligation to serve the public. You thus have a much greater obligation to manage that account—not just tweet out today’s talking points, but moderate the conversation so it doesn’t turn into anything worse. So yes, you, taxpayer-funded government social media account manager, and your boss, taxpayer funded elected executive, have an obligation to police the drivel that your boss’s account helps to spread on our dime.

Your Parlering on the job for Governor Noem is giving a national platform to violent individuals advocating the murder of elected officials. If I received such threats, I’d notify law enforcement. I’d keep such vile posts around (as Tupper does, and the threats he documents are deeply, disturbingly vile) only to serve as evidence to put the thugs behind bars.

Alas, like so many other Republicans this week, Fury and Noem appear unwilling to take action against obvious evil:

[Fury] then wrote that Parler’s community guidelines say it will remove “reported” member content that constitutes illegal activity. SDPB replied with an email asking if the Noem administration will report the offensive comments.

Fury did not immediately respond [Tupper, 2021.01.07].

Ian, instead of trying to duck the issue with another cheap shot at the press for doing it’s job, you might want to get better at doing your job. Don’t give insurrectionists a platform on our dime. Take real action to fight the real threats to our democracy.

That he can dismiss the incitement to murder as mere drivel by idiots suggests he sees no connection between idiocy and the people who stormed the Capitol yesterday. Or he’s simply disingenuous. Disappointing, either way.

Maybe kristi will think about it if she’s goes back to Georgia which was a job she did so well, Thanks kristi and all of you wonderful trumpies. Its so nice to see so many lying losers together just like in DC, you should get together more often. Its even better to see you in print, keep on clicking losers, your fingers are so brave. Sorry to tell you the Democratic party is now in control of the government gosh its just so sad isn’t it?

  3. ds 2021-01-07 21:19

dtrump is kristi’s idol and so she welcomes those postings. they give her good standing with dtrump. BTW dtrump only admits now a smooth transition of power to head off another impeachment. Right now he is busy gathering the names of all the arrested Capitol Building rioters that were captured so he can add them also to the list of relatives to be pardoned. And of course his own name will be at the top of the list. Just another reason he had to submit to a passive statement so as to have time to pardon more thugs.

  4. Jake 2021-01-07 21:35

I’d give a thousand dollars to see a picture of Krist Noem cowering under her desk in the SD Captitol while enraged South Dakotans storm the second floor of the Pierre capital. Yelling on her cell phone “Ian Fury, and Lewandowski, where in hell are you??”

  5. o 2021-01-07 21:36

I suppose my follow-up question would be, “has the governor ever removed any comments from this account?”

  6. grudznick 2021-01-07 21:54

Mr. Jake, if you had a thousand dollars to give to certain parties, that would be amazing.

Or, save yourself that grand and be a man and storm up there your ownfatself with your selfie stick and live tweet it all. You could be famous. Maybe get on CNN like that dork with the horn hat.

Try and be a little more polite and healing. And like my good friend Bob says, “stop being a dick.” You just foment violence and ignorance.

  7. JD 2021-01-07 23:43

What other SD elected officials have a Parler account? That’d be a good list for all SD voters to review.

  8. buckobear 2021-01-08 00:44

A Capitol Policeman has now died as a result of trump’s incitement.
Our governor is as complacent as the orange blob cowering in the oval office.
Time to erase South Dakota’s stain.

I’ve just reviewed the evidence. Facial recognition systems identified ANTIFA leaders in the capital, agitating/orchestrating chaos.

The entire event seemed like a setup to me, anyway .. now, the right has a martyr, GF x 1000.

  11. BJD 2021-01-08 03:47

Sorry, but the facial recognition didn’t ID Antifa, and the company that makes the system has said that the story claiming this is false. It did however ID two members of a neoNazi group and one Q-Anon supporter. The Q-Anon supporter (which is the tattooed shirtless guy in the fur hat with horns) has by his own admission shown up at BLM protests to cause trouble. He’s well known in Arizona. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/craigsilverman/facial-recognition-antifa-washington-times-false

There’s also this guy, known to be involved with a gun-rights group in Arkansas, who stole the letter from Pelosi’s office and bragged about it. There are other videos of him that I’ve seen on TV but this is the only one I’ve found online so far, it’s near the bottom of the article. He seems quite willing to talk to people, including a New York Times reporter who filmed him (along with curse words so video may not be safe for work or around small children and others easily offended, but it’s near the bottom of the article, at least in part). He’s since lawyered up, someone may have informed him that he apparently committed a felony and admitted to it on a publicly viewable tape. Now he’s trying to say he was just accidentally pushed inside (all the way to a congressional office?) and was just looking for a bathroom when he stole the letter (and it really isn’t stolen since he paid for it with a quarter….).

    https://nypost.com/2021/01/06/richard-barnett-took-letter-for-missouri-rep-from-pelosis-office/

And for general info, just this: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-mob-capitol/ — I know it’s Snopes, and no one from the right will believe it, but no one from the right believes any reputable news source anymore, even the ones that are quite willing to call out liberals as well, which Snopes does. So I can’t help with that.

Trump told his supporters to come. His supporters said they’d come. He told them to march to the Capitol and fight for him. He said this repeatedly in the weeks leading up to Wednesday, and he said this again in a speech Wednesday morning and the people who had gathered in a hitherto peaceful protest did exactly that.

Either you believe that hundreds, actually thousands of Trump supporters did exactly what he told them for weeks to do, or you believe that suddenly they all decided to stay home and that instead thousands of Antifa people who want him out of office suddenly showed up to try to get him elected for four more years.

Not to mention that multiple people who broke into the Capitol, trashing it, who have been posting for months about Stop the Steal and about supporting Trump since before the election, were caught on camera inside the Capitol. They then posted their own selfies and videos telling their friends and followers on social media how wonderful they were for having broken in.

…Or you believe that this is all a bunch of Antifa who got all these Trump supporters to stay home and let them show up as fake people in their place without either the thousands of Trump supporters or the thousands of Antifa people managing to slip up and say any word about this to anyone — not a wife or husband, not a girlfriend or boyfriend, not someone in a bar when they drank one too many, not someone at work or in their gym or club when they simply slipped up by accident. Thousands of people on both sides who never made an accidental mistake or purposely confessed to a loved one that they were about to betray their cause. Not a single one who accidentally slipped. All in order to get a president that they despise re-elected to office by interfering with the certification of the electoral college vote.

Yeah. Right. I don’t buy that.

  12. o 2021-01-08 08:03

John Dale: “I’ve just reviewed the evidence . . .”

Thank you John, at times like these I need to start my day with a good laugh. “Evidence.” You crack me up.

  13. Chris S. 2021-01-08 08:24

Sure, John Dale, the fascist Trump fans who were at the Trump rally, carrying Trump banners and hollering Trump slogans, who subsequently rioted and vandalized the US Capitol, were “antifa” — anti-fascists.

Also, the child with his hand in the cookie jar and chocolate smeared all over his face did not eat any cookies. “Antifa” did it!

  16. Richard Schriever 2021-01-08 09:23

But BJD – none of that matters to Mr. Dale – as he is claiming HE has personally “reviewed the evidence”.

  17. o 2021-01-08 10:23

The only person we know who was NOT at the terrorist attack on Congress was President Trump. Right after saying, ” WE’re going to walk down to the capitol . . .” Of course President Trump was using the Royal “we.”

He continue the maximum of why get your hands dirty when you can get your stooges to do it for you?

  18. Susan Wismer 2021-01-08 11:33

I’m glad Seth did this. I’ve been thinking I needed to educate myself on what it was that Gov. Noem wanted to communicate using her own echo chamber without the interference of moderators; now I know without having to actually go there myself. Sadly, my worst suspicions were confirmed. She is providing a platform that foments violence. She is not discouraging, but rather encouraging this divisive political speech. What a travesty! What a betrayal of the oath she took to defend the Constitution as Governor of this state!

Some of these kooks are now thinking that Trump is part of the deep state that set them up and didn’t have the guts to go to the Capital Building with them. They are mulling around the idea that knocking off Trump and his lackeys might be the next step. Maybe that security fence in Pierre was a good idea.

Apple has informed the social media network Parler that it has 24 hours to rid the platform of inappropriate content, or else face removal from the App Store. The news was first reported Input Mag, who obtained a copy of the email sent from Apple to Parler.

In an email sent by Apple to Parler this morning (Pacific Time) and obtained by Input, the company provided numerous examples of Parler users explicitly calling for violence and referenced CEO John Matze’s comment that he doesn’t “feel responsible for any of this and neither should the platform.”

If the content cited by Apple is not removed, then the Parler app will be kicked out of the App Store.

Noem is needlessly delaying vaccination roll out to ALL South Dakotans. A small state with lots of cash can move much more effectively. Oak Creek Colorado is doing it. Waiting until February for older folks is not acceptable, and we must insist, or lives will be lost, insist, for much more aggressive, effective leadership.

Also, in The Spirit of Words coming from Governor Noem:

“ Republicans got our butts kicked in Georgia on Tuesday. A 33-year-old with no accomplishments and a smooth-talking preacher wiped the floor with us. The idea that Georgia, of all places, could elect TWO COMMUNISTS to the United States Senate was ridiculous.” (Emphasis added)

You have to be able to convince the 80 million folks who voted for Trump (and the millions more that supported them) that the facially ID’d Antifa/BLM manipulating and inciting the crowd were Trump supporters.

    It won’t fly.

As we descend very quickly into Communism, globalists will sit off shore. In about 10 years, they plan to drop the planks, rape, and pillage our descendants.

If we’re dead by then, we will not witness this part.

  28. Bill 2021-01-09 07:52

Gov. Kristi Noem needs a new speech writer and a review of her course in high school economics. Clearly she lacks understanding of the terms “capitalism,” “socialism,” “communism,” and “mixed economic systems.” Likewise she discombobulates by saying how we speak about others has consequences and then referring to others as “smooth-talkers” and “unaccomplished.”

I just discovered millions of illegal votes that are credited to drumpf by Johnny ‘One Time’ Dale. drumpf is over 80 million votes now. Where did they come from? Should JD be waterboarded to get to the truth? Yesterday a nutter credited drumpf with 75 million votes.

Here is a number that is closer to the truth… over 3800 Americans died of covid Friday the 8th.

  31. mike from iowa 2021-01-09 08:29

If we’re dead by then, we will not witness this part.

What’s yer backup plan? In 10 years we will find out you are and always have been a false prophet, so you better be coming up with excuses why you lied to America.

  32. Donald Pay 2021-01-09 09:06

A simple solution for John Dale and that ilk of folks who refuse to accept reality. You will never accept reality because Satan has entered your mind. You are being controlled by lizard people. Pick up your weapon. Point it at your head. Fire. All your trouble is solved.

  33. Caleb 2021-01-09 10:18

John Dale, are you one of those who fell for things like “The Black Book of Communism”? One thing I find comedic is that only after Trump supporters stirred up clear trouble did Trump supporters start contemplating, with any significant weight, agitators co-opting a protest and/or movement. How convenient…

  34. robin friday 2021-01-09 10:50

All the blue flags that said “Trump”, some of them flying ABOVE the Stars and Stripes, convinced me right off that these “people” were Trump supporters, or doing a very good job of persuading that they were Trump supporters. Doesn’t take genius.

  35. robin friday 2021-01-09 11:09

And the guy who’s so proud of himself for stealing and toting Pelosi’s podium around the Capitol that he’s had his picture taken smiling and yukking it up for the camera, with his TRUMP stocking cap on?–been arrested now, hoping they keep him a few days before he makes bail. Would be satisfactory if he couldn’t make bail, but he looks like he probably can. Wonder who his boss is, and if the boss is as proud of him as he is proud of himself.

  36. robin friday 2021-01-09 11:14

And where’s the evidence for “80 million people voted for Trump”? Nonexistent, that’s where it is.

  37. Mark Anderson 2021-01-09 17:37

Gosh John Dale, I feel so sorry for you, boo hoo.

  38. grudznick 2021-01-09 17:44

  40. jerry 2021-01-09 18:16

Eliminate the Electoral College, immediately. Whoever gets the most votes, wins! Just like we do it right here, most votes win. Small states just need to be small states, nothing special, that’s what makes them special. The idea that a couple of dingbats from South Dakota have the same power as a dingbat from Texas, makes no sense, they are not equal by any means.

  41. Caleb 2021-01-09 18:30

John Dale, do you think the “Hammer and Scorecard” scenario is credible, and if so, care to share why?

  42. jerry 2021-01-09 19:43
