Initiative and Referendum All About Civics and Free Speech

If you really like civics and free speech…

Friends of democracy, starting tomorrow, I should have two petitions available for you to sign.

As you know, I’m circulating an initiative petition to roll back many of the restrictions the Legislature has placed on the ballot question petition process over the past few years. On Friday, I’ll be adding a referendum petition to roll back new restrictions, the Big-Brotherish free-speech registry and badges that the Governor signed last week in House Bill 1094—ironic, really, in a Session with talk about the importance of civics and free speech.

If you’d like to participate in civics and free speech, the necessary forms are below:

Official HB 1094 Referendum Petition (8.5×11, print on one sheet front and back)
Official HB 1094 Referendum Circulator Form(8.5×11, print one-sided, cut in quarters, fill in your contact/pay info)

Official People Power Petition Form (11×17, print front and back, fold for 4-page booklet format)
Official People Power Circulator Form (8.5×11, print front and back, cut in quarters for handouts, fill in your contact/pay info)

The People Power Petition is on the streets now—print and circulate!

But don’t take that referendum petition out on the streets today! Before we can circulate against HB 1094, the Secretary has to approve the form (it’s in the mail!), and the Legislature has to finish Veto Day tomorrow. If the Secretary approves the form today, or tomorrow morning, then the moment the Legislature adjourns tomorrow, the “No Stinking Badges” Petition can take signatures.

Notice also that before you can join the petition drive, we have to submit your name, phone number, and e-mail address to the Secretary of State on a circulator form, which the Secretary must approve before you can circulate. You must then print off a bunch of those circulator forms with your name, phone number, and e-mail address and hand that information to every voter who signs your petition. If you carry both petitions, you have hand out separate circulator forms for each petition. Those are some of the unnecessary, speech-dampening, grassroots-deterring restrictions the People Power Petition seeks to repeal and the HB 1094 Referendum seeks to prevent.

The referendum petition deadline is June 27, 5 p.m. Central, by which time we must submit 16,961 signatures to the Secretary of State. For cushion, our target is 25,000.

We have until November 4 to collect the same number of signatures for the initiative petition; however, since we’re collecting signatures for the referendum anyway, and since the two issues are inextricably connected, we might as well get all the signatures we can on both this spring. Let’s get ’em both done!

If you want to do some real civics, grab petitions and circulator handouts, play by the rules (even the unnecessary ones the Legislature is imposing to stop you!), and let’s put HB 1094 and the People Power Initiative on the ballot!

Grudz, my past petitions have had particularly good validation rates, better than the paid circulators from out of state.
