Noem Gaslights Silent Voter, Adopts Democratic Messaging

An eager reader notes receipt of another little bit of flim-flammery from Republican gubernatorial candidate Kristi Noem:

Kristi for Governor, campaign letter, received by Dakota Free Press 2018.10.01.
Kristi for Governor, campaign letter, received by Dakota Free Press 2018.10.01.

“Thank you for requesting an absentee ballot,” says Noem at the top. She includes an absentee ballot application. My correspondent avers having made no such request to the local county auditor or my correspondent’s preferred political party.

Now when a Republican opens her letter with a lie, it’s hard to put any credence in anything else she writes. But we should take a moment to read her indictment of the last forty years of Republican rule in South Dakota:

Our economy has been steady, but it isn’t growing. Crime, however, is on the rise, particularly as it relates to drug use. Scandals have weakened trust in the state government. And we aren’t being really innovative when it comes to education, skills training, poverty reduction, and healthcare [Kristi Noem, campaign letter, received by Dakota Free Press 2018.10.01].

Noem still hasn’t resolved her position on the economy, whether we’re enjoying a Trump tidal wave or a Rounds/Daugaard quagmire. She cries about crime but twiddles her thumbs on the Violence Against Women Act. She borrows “innovative” from some focus group but opposes efforts to develop innovations in education and completely resists Medicaid expansion, the most immediate, cost-effective innovation we could implement in healthcare.

While we can’t trust Kristi to mean these words, we can perhaps divine something from her choice of these words. She’s talking like a South Dakota Democrat: trying to increase voter participation, claiming that the current Republican regime is failing, and appealing to concerns about scandals committed by those Republicans. Noem’s effort to eat into Democratic messaging is one more sign that she may believe Democratic candidate Billie Sutton’s poll numbers even more than I do.

Lazy Dirtball Kristi Noem has nothing but lies to offer after eight years of slacking off in Congress. So, why not send phony “response” letters in a absentee GOTV campaign? After ads smearing Billie Sutton with lies, what’s a few more lies in a letter?

Voters have Lazy Dirtball Kristi’s number this time. Polls show voters want an earnest cowboy over a professional political slacker. Being Governor in South Dakota requires someone who can inspire and who’s committed to working hard. Billy has character. Lazy Dirtball Kristi has already defined herself with her lies.

In all of the Governor campaigns I’ve seen, I don’t think a greater contrast has been presented to South Dakota voters.

Ms Noem just can’t help herself, can she? This is absolutely ridiculous.

Saw her newest commercial last night – about how hard of a worker she is, never gives up, blah blah blah. Who is narrating the commercial and saying all of these wonderful things about her? None other than Mr Kristi Noem! That’s like my mom doing a commercial for me!

Never gives up? Tell me again how many of the small businesses she tried to start she has not given up on and is still running?

Seems like Gaslighting is the Pootiepublicans’ campaign tool of choice. Not policy, not honesty, not debate, not meeting the folks. Gaslighting.

In other words, all they’ve got is deception.
    Sad. Very sad.
