The South Dakota Right to Life PAC is exerting itself against Senator Deb Soholt (R-14/Sioux Falls), apparently in hopes of helping Tyler Swanger defeat her in tomorrow’s primary. The PAC’s May 20 pre-primary report shows $1,176.85 spent on “Facebook ads concerning [Soholt’s] pro-life record in the legislature.” Their current anti-Soholt posts include the following:
Mark Zuckerberg, liberals in California… even Angie Buhl O’Donnell, who hasn’t been in the Legislature since 2016 but who remains in SDRtL’s hearts as the Anti-Christ next to whom all opponents can be painted.
It won’t help Soholt’s cause with these attackers to hear me say this, but Soholt was a voice of reason opposing 2016 Senate Bill 72, our anti-woman, anti-science, anti-Constitution 20-week abortion ban. So was Senator Deb Peters.
According to his pre-primary report filed May 21, Tyler Swanger has spent $450 of other people’s money and nearly $4,500 of his own cash on his campaign against Senator Soholt. He has also received $758 in donated signs and campaign trinkets. As of May 17, Senator Soholt reported receiving $1,750 from other nice people and $5,500 from PACs, none of which are from California. Senator Soholt also reports $500 from the South Dakota Republican Party (hold on—is the party allowed to favor candidates in the primary?). She started the year with $21,820.63 on hand, so she was able to spend $12,644.35 and still have $17,121.28 for the final push to Tuesday.
Scott Ehrisman thinks Swangers youth and enthusiasm can beat Soholt’s cash and alleged hypocrisy. In District 14, I have to root for big money… although I suppose I could root for Swanger to pull off an SDRtL-backed win but be so broke and so extreme that the Democrat in District 14, Justyn Hauck, would have a better shot at taking the seat.
p.s.: We should note that Senator Billie Sutton voted for two of the three bills SDRtL PAC mentions in its Soholt salvos. He supported the two stronger bills, 2014 HB 1162 purporting to stop sex-selective abortions and 2016 SB 72, and opposed only 2017 HB 1101‘s tweakage of the 20-week abortion ban penalty from Class 1 misdemeanor to Class 6 felony. So we can count on South Dakota Right to Life not working as hard against Sutton’s gubernatorial campaign as they are against Soholt’s Senate reëlection bid, right?
The problem with Deb is she will tell you to your face she’s pro-life than vote pro-choice. I’m fine with her voting pro-choice, but just tell constituents you are. She’s your typical left-moderate Republican who uses the ‘R’ to get elected.
South DaCola, does Soholt’s position differ from mine—
https://dakotafreepress.com/2016/08/07/why-im-pro-life-and-pro-choice-in-fifty-words/
—or from that of other authors who have tried to see past the sloganeering and explain that “pro-life” and “pro-choice” can go hand in hand? Or does Soholt say “I’ll vote to ban all abortions” and then not vote that way?
I think soholt is going to win even though she falsely misleads people
Her latest mailer “sponsors bills to protect our babies” , but if Tyler does win justyn won’t have a chance against Tyler.
He’s to well liked, if you ever sit down and talk to this kid you could disagree with him all day and he will be the most respectful person you’ve met.
He will get into a government position sometime, I just don’t think this time
Pretty close. She told me that she was ‘personally’ pro-life but supports abortion for rape/incest and safety of the mother. I told her that would make you ‘Pro-choice’ and she kept denying she was. I have encountered several other constituents who have had the same convo with her. I am not a lawmaker, so my stance on abortion really doesn’t matter, but as a lawmaker, SoHolt should just say, “I’m pro-choice” and get it over with. Her voting record certainly reflects that she is, not sure what she is trying to hide from? The voters of SD have voted twice in favor of what she supports.
It is somehow appropriate that that the anti-choice organization is in the tank for Swanger. In German, schwanger means pregnant.
Soholt supports a woman’s right to be a fully autonomous human being. Good. That’s what women are. But the GOP and wingnuts can’t stand that.
Schwanger?! Pregnant?! No way! That’s too good to be true,.
Wait. I’m confused. Senator Soholt is pregnant, or she beat pregnancy?
