Dakota Free Press Podcast—The Trial Run!

Last updated on 2017-03-23

Let’s try this—the first Dakota Free Press Podcast!

I met Aberdeen comedian Spencer Dobson at last Saturday’s crackerbarrel. I’m not nearly as funny as Spencer, and we’re neither one as funny as our District 3 Senator, but we got to talking about putting together a Dakota Free Press show. Above is our first trial at a podcast, just two guys sitting at the table (with Spencer’s really cool audio gear!) talking about South Dakota politics.

In this episode, we touch on the Pledge of Allegiance, guns, and Al Novstrup’s Sharia bushwah, then go deep on the Legislature’s repeal of Initiated Measure 22 and the pale replacement bills Republicans have offered… plus a closing shot at the Mathew Wollmann Legislative sex scandal.

Let us know what you think! Your feedback will help decide what to do for our next podcast. If you like it, we may be able to make the Dakota Free Press Podcast a regular production, maybe even with some live shows here in the Hub City and around our great state!

    Heck yuh, A+

That was absolutely outstanding, you guys. Excellent in every regard. Cory is an even better explainer verbally than as a writer … and he’s a superlative writer. Spencer’s comedic sense is the perfect buffer for sometimes dry, political commentary. Great timing. Only stepped on each other once. This idea’s been needed for a long time. Keep it fresh, fellas and you’ll have a hit.
PS … especially good for Republicans. You know, I tried to register as a Republican once but was denied when they found out I can read. (I know. Comedy is better left to the pros.)

  3. Thanks, Vance and Porter!

Stepping on each other—indeed, I need to work on my timing. Spencer’s training and background are a perfect complement to mine.

Any suggestions for topics for next show?

Entertaining, can’t wait to here you talk about my legislators, Greenfield (2), and Tulson. Thought you might comment on “the religion of science” from cracker barrel.

  5. Porter Lansing

Hmmmm? Topics? That’s good brain guano. SoDak’s German heritage leads the citizens to the critical and negative by nature, so a positive show might be just the contrast the audience wants subconsciously. How about all the good things that got done in Pierre?

Porter, that may be a short podcast (good things!)

  7. Porter Lansing

Shhhhh, Jake. That’s the punch line. People don’t change by hearing something they’re doing is wrong. People change by hearing an example of what they’re doing right. lol

Very Very good! I hope you continue. Talk about the bill allowing legislators to conceal carry in the legislature. Rep. Larry Rhoden deserves ridicule and censure.

  9. You know, Porter, a “good things” segment might be a nice touch! We could do the two-minute drill on bills we like.

Kurt, we could certainly spend time talking about science. It looks like our next podcast will be around March 6 or 7, so we can see then where SB 55 stands. Ditto, Kim, for all the concealed carry bills… although we touched on guns this time, so maybe we can save that topic for another show.

We also have a couple weeks to see if Larry Rhoden is questioned… but as our look at statute suggests, the law may not be able to arrest Larry until after Session. That’s o.k., we can wait….
