Jackley Endorses Democratic Critique That Pierre Lacks Integrity

In his Aberdeen press conference following EB-5 czar Joop Bollen’s initial court appearance, Attorney General Marty Jackley fielded a question about holding people accountable following “several investigations… involving state and federal funds that have been missing.”

A.G. Marty Jackley sounding the alarm?
A.G. Marty Jackley sounding the alarm?

Part of the responsibility of the Attorney General is to enforce the laws, and part of my desire is to bring back the integrity of state government, and that’s part of what this process is [Attorney General Marty Jackley, press conference, Aberdeen, SD, 2016.04.01, question beginning at 19:20 in Hub City Radio audio file].

To say you want to bring back integrity means you believe integrity is not here.

Spoken like a true candidate for Governor… a Democratic candidate, or at least a candidate who agrees with the honest critique of corruption in South Dakota that we Democrats, not to mention objective journalists, have been offering for years, corruption that, poo-pooed by Republican propagandists and panderers but now proven by the deaths and scandals of EB-5 and GEAR UP, is too glaring for Republicans of good conscience to ignore. By saying he wants to bring back integrity, A.G. Jackley is positioning himself to challenge the Republican powers that be, be they kings or kingmakers, who have brought us the current corrupt one-party regime.

Care to switch parties, Marty?

    So,Jackley fired Jackley? Right?

It’s a hard pill to swallow coming from him. He’s so tied into Mike Rounds that it isn’t believable. I bet he hires Rounds’ advisors for his campaign and if he’s elected to run the state. His entire career has been handed to him by the Rounds administration. He hasn’t shown any ability to challenge any of the Republicans in power. He’s silent on Melody Schopp, He’s silent on Rounds, he’s silent on fixes (while Mickelson actually brings forth decent legislation – he’s silent).

Jackley looks like he is political posturing now that Rounds is free and clear for the next 6 years, Mickelson beat him to the punch on conflict of interest laws (Jackley was AWOL).

Not to disagree with your analysis Mike, but remember it was John Thune who chose Jackley to be US Attorney back in the ’00s. Not Thune’s 1st choice, true, but still it was Thune — whose machine is now behind Mickelson for gov, as one would expect given Thune’s history.

My sense is Jackley is more his own man than a Rounds protege. Especially given Rounds’ innate limitations. (I doubt it was Mike’s idea to charge Joop with felonies!)

With that, agree 100% that Jackley’s been MIA to a conspicuous degree on EB-5 & GEAR UP. (Which he has in common w/ the DOJ/FBI.)

“bring back the integrity of state government” = “be more careful about hiding our transgressions going forward”

    …or is that too cynical?

  5. Mike Iowa—ha again!

Mike (uh oh—two Mikes!), you’re right—Jackley still has some explaining to do on his prior silence on EB-5 during the 2014 campaign and his silence now on Schopp. Maybe prosecuting Bollen will infect him with a greater enthusiasm for doing his job and going after more GEAR UP culprits.

I dispute any claim that Mickelson is somehow doing better. He has offered a few fringe-nibbling reforms that offer little serious protection against corruption. What kind of reform is it to say, “You can’t have a conflict of interest unless you can get the boss to sign off on it”? It’s possible Mickelson and Jackley are both posturing to avoid taking real action against the real Mafiosi pulling their one-party regime’s strings. But if their motives are what they say they are, I would argue that Mickelson’s Benda-Bollen-Duncan laws aren’t as serious an assault on corruption as Jackley’s current efforts to haul bad guys in front of the cameras and the courts. Mickelson don’t vote for GOAC to kick ass. He didn’t vote to shut down EB-5 or take hold of GEAR UP and turn it back to scholarships. It’s probably a Hitler/Stalin choice, but at this point, I’d rather throw in with Jackley than Mickelson to fight corruption.

Of course, the best guarantee for fighting corruption is to elect a Democratic Governor in 2018. Governor Herseth Sandlin, Governor Hunhoff, Governor Sutton, Governor Lowe… that blows the lid off all this corruption.

Cory, you need to ask Jackley and Krebs why they are not petitioning the government for stronger rules and regs with actual teeth to combat their criminal buddies. And do so openly so citizens can see there is nothing to hide.

“Teeth and transparency” should be requirements for new laws over-seeing gov’t bidness.

Vote for ME! Let me be YOUR governor !! I’ll fix ALL this corruption!!! I hear Bernie Hunhoff is not going to run for another term. Can’t blame him.

  9. Join the Attorney General’s fight against corruption. Vote Democrats into office and for Initiated Measure #22 (the anti-corruption bill).

  10. Teeth and transparency—good slogan, Douglas!

Mark is right: we have an excellent opportunity in this year’s election to make real improvements in South Dakota government. Vote for IM22 to create an ethics commission and reduce the power of big money in elections. Vote for Amendment T to take redistricting power out of the hands of the Legislature and reduce their ability to protect their re-election chances. Vote NO on Referred Law 19 to protect citizen ballot access and prevent incumbents from seizing another advantage. Vote for Amendment V to give more voters more opportunities to hold incumbents accountable.

If Marty’s willing to stand up and prosecute some bad guys, we can stand up and vote on the ballot measures to fight corruption.

    I will vote.

The Republican voters are like the carving over the stable in Japan. But with a slightly different interpretation. ?Deaf ?Mute and ?Blind to their ignorance. It has driven them into the total insanity of fear and hatred.
