Protestor: South Dakota Last in Teacher Pay, First in Discrimination

Accountable South Dakota reports over 100 people showed up  to protest legislative malpractice at this morning’s crackerbarrel for Districts 13, 14, and 15 at the downtown Sioux Falls Holiday Inn. One picture aptly sums up what’s wrong with the South Dakota Legislature:

200 miles away at the Aberdeen crackerbarrel, Senator David Novstrup says the bill he’s sponsoring to put $4,500 more in his pocket for his “constituent services” doesn’t stand a chance of passing. The above sign explains why the public would support that assessment.

It would not surprise me if one of the right-wing nut-jobs in the legislature would offer a bill that would build a wall around SD and have Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota pay for it. They are like a bunch of bad gamblers and big losers in Vegas who lose everything by continuing to make bad bets thinking the next try might be winner.

  2. Rorschach

It’s hard to argue with that sign.

David Novstrup wants to lower this young lady’s pay even while raising his own, but this young lady is on to him.

  3. grudznick

We should not wall off Wyoming and Montana.

  4. grudznick

That young lady did not plan her sign well. She should have measured the bottom of the beer cardboard and counted the letters in “discrimination” to determine where the middle of the word would go so she didn’t have to take emergency measures at the end. Like our legislatures do.

  5. jerry

That dude from Aberdeen needs to be replaced.

  6. Nick Nemec

That cardboard didn’t come from a beer box, more likely a refrigerator box.

  7. grudznick

Mr. Nemec is probably right. If it came from a beer box there would have been some circles pushed into it, plus clearly that young woman is far too young to buy beer.

My statement about planning ahead to avoid oddball measures at the end still applies to her and our legislatures. Somebody should go knock on the doors of Novstrup the young and Novstrup the younger and tell them to knock it off.

And, at least,Dems can spell. Wingnuts, not so much. http://tinyurl.com/gr2lemf

Thank me later. The original url was 438 characters.

  9. grudznick

Mike, I don’t know about Iowa, but in South Dakota our “Dems” usually punctuate and put a space after their commas, thusly.

  10. mike from iowa

I’m environmentally conscious and hate to waste space,Grudz. See,I did it some more. Sue me.

  11. grudznick

I support coal fired energy plants, and spaces don’t take any extra bidgets and idgets over the internets because spaces are blank, Mr. Mike. But you should really consider boycotting South Dakota and telling all your neighbors to, also. Don’t come here this summer, you won’t like it.

  12. Lynn

    Grudz,

Maybe Mr. Mike should include in his boycott to not post on South Dakota blogs too. Clean Coal!

  13. Donald Pay

Love that poster, and the young lady who can show such joy by fighting against stupidity. That young lady should be the future of South Dakota, but the Republicans seem intent on driving her away through hatred and inferior educational policies.

  14. Jenny

Congratulations SD, you beat Mississippi in discrimination. Don’t you just love all this national coverage you’re getting? Last year it was harassment towards Native American children, now this year it’s LGBT hate.

  15. Lynn

When is the deadline for the Governor to veto HB 1008?

  16. Lynn

    Jenny,

Every year it LGBT has been a target in the legislature going back a number of years. It was more focused on Transgender this year with a number of bills.

Expect more next year. They will be crafted differently to do their best to pass thru as non-threatening as they can without raising alarm but the source of what is driving these bills and the goals are the same.

  17. grudznick

Mr. H understands all the rules and deadlines better than most but I haven’t seen him blog when that deadline is yet.

  18. larry kurtz

Pay cops, screw teachers, discriminate against diversity: South Dakota and New Mexico more alike than different.

South Dakota: Land of Infinite Vertigo.

  21. mike from iowa

My boycott includes both Grudz and Sudz to not post on South Dakota blogs ever again. Grudz-your girl? friend didn’t put a comma in front of the word too. Ream her for that.

As for not liking Wingnut Dakota-that goes without saying. I do see much potential after the trash is hauled out.

  22. grudznick

Mike, you seem sensitive about being from Iowa. I understand.

  23. Jenny

You’re right Lynn, and all these LGBT hate bills are getting meaner each year. The SD GOP is not fooling out of staters. They know it is legalized bullying towards an already marginalized group that has some of the highest suicide and depression rates around.
Oh and by the way, my 10 year old daughter has seen a picture of the penis in her MN public school where they are teaching sex education. Oh my god, she saw a penis, how horrific! She will forever have PTSD. These legislators somehow think female students will be scarred for life if they see a penis. The GOP really doesn’t give much credit to young females do they? People mind their own business in locker rooms and restrooms, why does the GOP think something nasty will happen?

I have taught my daughter what transgender is and she feels empathy for these people. This is what we should be teaching our children, some empathy instead of legalized hate. But no, SD has to make it weird and discriminatory.

  24. Lynn

Jenny Many Republicans are against what has been going on and it does not reflect what has been happening in Pierre. There are many in the legislature that feel there are better things to do than this. Besides it’s hurtful.

  25. larry kurtz

Jenny, being registered as a Democrat in South Dakota is a fool’s errand unless you are an office-holder or a candidate.

  26. Jenny

I had to see a scary white haired wrinkly old Priest in the confessional when I was eight. I’m still suffering from PTSD from that.

  27. Erwin

I see where Rep. Rev. Craig is changing his vote to support the Gov’s teacher pay bill. I hope the Governor didn’t sell his veto of 1108 to get it.

  28. Lynn veto deadline is five business days (not Sat/Sun) from time bill is presented to Governor (Const Article 4 Section 4). HB 1008 passed Wednesday, but I don’t see in the House journals that is has been presented to the Governor yet. I’m unclear—presentation of the bill isn’t just passage or speakers signature, but the actual placing of the bill before the Governor, right? Maybe the House is polite and holds off on presenting bills to the Governor when he’s out of town (National Governors Association meeting in DC).

  29. Lynn

    Monday/Tuesday deadline time frame?

  30. Rorschach

Al Novstrup also wants to lower this young lady’s pay while raising his own pay.

It’s hard to believe that anybody would sponsor or vote for a bill to lower wages. Shouldn’t all politicians want exactly the opposite for their constituents? I know, I know. Corporations are people too. If the GOP party can just appoint Scalia’s replacement and replace one of those old liberals too then corporations will no longer be denied the fundamental right to vote that Democrats have been denying them.

  31. Roger Cornelius

The governor is to meet with a group of transgender children on Tuesday before he whether or not he will sign the bill.

  32. Lynn

    Roger,

Thank you for the info. I believe the Governor will meet with the bill sponsors too in order to get a better feel from both sides of the issue. We will find out Tuesday sometime I suppose whether it passes or is vetoed.

  33. larry kurtz

Another smoke screen burning up the clock instead of debating ethics oversight. Good job, SDGOP.

  34. Donald Pay

Let’s not think that any of these “genitals bills” are being thunk up by the single digit IQ legislators in South Dakota to meet some burning need. These are all directed and largely written by righty bill mills, who understand they have lost the gay rights fight, and are now desperate to switch to a different wedge issue that might gin up some excitement to drive the church lady crowd to the polls. These bill are being introduced in lots of states. These righty bill mills have done this stuff for twenty years.

These issues have no connection to any of the states they are being introduced in, and are largely meant to create a way to feed into ads for the next election cycle. Wisconsin had one of these genital bills, which was largely thought to be to help bolster Scott Walker’s presidential election ambitions. Ha!!!

There was really no reason to introduce it because school districts have largely dealt with this issue pretty fairly over the last 4-5 years. In fact, after a very spirited hearing in which the single digit IQ crowd came up against some smart high school students, the Republicans in Wisconsin let the clock burn up a number of these cuckoo bills, including one similar to South Dakota’s genitals bill.

  35. Donal

Once again the republicans have embarrassed South Dakota on a national level …………. people from the real world just continue to shake their heads and laugh at us. Thank you again republicans!! I heard us referred to as “Prairie Clowns and Prairie Fools”

  36. Jenny

There is no way that Gov Daugaard will sign this bill.

  37. larry kurtz

Amen, Jenny: the South Dakota legislature may have reached peak nutball.

  38. larry kurtz

But laud them for avoiding anything that would add local control to social engineering and crony capitalism.

  39. larry kurtz

I get the sense that HB1008 was socially engineered to divert attention from Bendagate, the Westerhuis murders, the culture of corruption in Pierre and South Dakota’s slide into red state collapse.

  40. Nick Nemec

Cory, judging from the nasty and uncalled for memes I see, Caitlyn Jenner’s opposition to HB1008 will only increase the pressure on the Governor to sign this particular piece of cultural warfare into law.

  41. Nick Nemec

Mr. Kurtz, you underestimate the nutball potential of South Dakota.

  42. larry kurtz

Thank you, Mr. Nemec. I stand corrected.

  43. Jenny

I would bet Daugaard vetoes. I just don’t see him wanting his legacy to be tarnished by penises and vaginas.
