South Dakotans for Bernie Sanders? Maybe! Discover the Unexpected—come meet your fellow Berniemaniacs tonight in Sioux Falls!

Update 13:22 CDT: Rapid City residents can attend a Bernie Sanders event at their downtown public library as well! Katrina Wilke is hosting a Sanders for President organizing meeting tonight at 5 p.m. MDT at the downtown library, 610 Quincy St., Meeting Room B. And it turns out Bernie Sanders will be attending the Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and 3,000 other meetings tonight electronically:

On July 29, Sanders will address thousands of supporters live via streaming video from a home in Washington, D.C. According to his campaign, more than 82,000 people have indicated that they plan to attend one of the more than 3,000 simultaneous local organizing meetings.

“We have a technology available to us that Barack Obama and Howard Dean did not have,” the U.S. senator from Vermont said in an interview with the New York Times‘ First Draft. “And the idea that I can simultaneously be speaking to people located in 1,000 different places is pretty, pretty exciting.” The candidate’s address will be followed by a planning meeting for anyone who wants to stay online and discuss joining his campaign [Deirdre Fulton, “Fighting for 50 States, Sanders House Parties Expect Tens of Thousands,” Common Dreams, 2015.07.28].

The Sanders campaign said yesterday they had received over 82,000 online RSVPs for tonight’s event.

    Feel the Bern! :)

  2. Don Coyote

Maybe there could be select readings from Bernies “Man-and-Woman” essay and then get your picture taken standing next to a cardboard cutout of him. Myself, I won’t be able to attend. Wednesdays I put the world to rights with a few “evil” conservatives over some excellent beer (well they drink PBR but I’ll forgive them).

  3. Lynn

Don, PBR is code for hipsters. lol Are you saying everyone that is interested in Bernie Sanders is a hipster? PBR would certainly not be my preference.

  4. Don Coyote

No doubt PBR has “hipster” appeal, but my friends are anything but. They’ve probably been drinking it since their high school days. One is a Vietnam Vet and actually longs for some San Miguel (Phillipines) Myself I’ve been enjoying Lagunista that is now available in SD.

Hard to say what Bern drinks (if he does) but I’d love to try some of Vermont’s Hill Farmstead.

    Porter, a small correction.

    Sanders / Warren 2016

Hillary refuses to answer about Keystone XL, but signs indicate she would approve it. She isn’t for reinstating Glass / Steagal.. I think she is too cozy with Wall Street, with big oil, and too hawkish.

The jokers to the far right are worse, but she is still part of the problem.

  8. Roger Cornelius

We need to keep Elizabeth Warren where she is, she is and would be a far more effective senator than a vice president.

  9. Jackilope, I’m inclined to side with you… but I wonder: would Sanders on the ticket, campaigning hard through Election Day, keep the democratic-socialist message at the forefront and force Clinton to come back our way on important issues like Keystone XL? Or is Clinton too steeped in corporate America to bend that direction?

  10. Jason Sebern

I am backing Sanders. He is the only candidate who will truly represent the people. All the others will continue to represent the moneyed interests.
PS I have a poor record of choosing the right Democratic candidate …

  11. Jackilope

Corey, I don’t have a great deal of trust with her on the Keystone XL, etc. That is a myth that Sanders forces her more to the left. She is obliged and cozy with corporations. That she is safe and deferring opinion on issues like this do not assure me in the least.

I think we have one opportunity to really change course and thst is with Sanders. HRC isn’t going to be change. If she is the nominee, the sane are obliged to vote for her because of SCOTUS appointments.

  12. Gayle

    The venue has been moved.
Email from Ellee said: “We are moving over to ICON EVENT HALL located at 402 N Main Ave. in downtown Sioux Falls “

  13. Gayle

Jason: I would agree with you and the first Dem I campaigned for was McGovern… Bernie will probably be the last.

  14. Rorschach

I agree with Jackalope’s take on Hillary too. Bernie Sanders can’t beat Hillary though. I’m thinking that Joe Biden needs to get into the race, but he can afford to wait a little while longer for Hillary to flounder some more.

  15. Roger Cornelius

And then there is what John McCain calls the “crazies” that support Trump advocating for a Trump/Sanders ticket, the scary part is that they are serious.

  16. Porter Lansing

In clarification … I’m not endorsing a ticket of Clinton/Sanders. I’m predicting a ticket of Clinton/Sanders. His popularity is something that would nearly guarantee a victory and won’t be able to be refused by the Clintons. Should Sen. Sanders refuse to be a V.P. candidate it will be Clinton/Cisneros.

  18. Jason Sebern

    Porter:

Bill Clinton and his Republican allies repealed the Glass-Steagall Act. That really happened. It led to the Great Recession. Hillary is tied to that fact until she declares otherwise. If Hillary gets the nomination expect more of the same …

@Mr. Seburn: With all respect, South Dakota liberals are in a somewhat unique situation when it comes to Presidential politics. I personally can’t imagine how I’d react if I lived where my vote for President won’t influence the electoral vote for my state. It would be of little consequence to our Democratic candidate what I thought, said and did and that could lead to incomplete examination of the inevitable choice between Bush and Clinton. However, this piece was written about “THE BERN” by Mr. Heidelberger and tonight’s a big night.
3,344: The number of gatherings BERNIE SANDERS supporters will host tonight at locations across the country. More than 100,000 people have RSVPed, according to the Washington Post. http://wapo.st/1MugrgY

A report from the Sioux Falls Bernie Event. There was a turn out of about 80+, with all age groups. Everyone was fired up! It happened that I was at the door and signing in people and many of the folks put a “V” in front of their name, specifying they would be willing to volunteer.
Interestingly enough, only KSFY was there, the others were informed, but ….
A gal from the Argus also stopped, but did not stay more than 15 minutes.

  21. Gayle

Hey Don! There was no cardboard cut out of Bernie. Of course I was disappointed because I was hopeful I could get a photo op with him.

  22. Don Coyote

@Porter: As far as Presidential politics is concerned, even the SD primary is meaningless coming as one of the last primaries in the country. The 2015 race will be over long by then and Hillary will be the winner although really battered and bruised. And seriously, do you really want the future of the Democrat party represented by a pair of septuagenarians (ok Hill will be close enough to 70 for government work)? Better stock up on the Metamucil® and be careful not to step on all the cannula hoses.

  24. Roger Cornelius

South Dakota’s 2008 Democratic primary was very consequential Don Coyote or whatever you real name is.

  25. Gayle

Don: I would prefer someone with experience, without their hand in someone’s pocket. Hillary has her hand in a lot of pockets, can not commit to issues, makes Caesar salad speeches and seems to think she deserves the nomination.
Personally, I have had enough of the Bushes and the Clintons…but what do I know? I am nearly 70. Do you really think we are all doddering old fools?

  26. Porter Lansing

It’s the ISSUES that matter most in Sodak politics, this cycle. An elected Republican, no matter how extreme can be nullified by a statute or state amendment that restricts his or her agenda. At essence, that’s as valuable as any Bluedog Dem. It’s the selfless citizen activists (Cory Heidelberger) that are driving the issues ….. and the issues are steering the car. SD liberal politics are some of the most fun to participate with in USA. #TruthToPower

  27. Gayle

The official head count of 168 people at the SF Bernie Event. It is a nice start.

  28. 168 people at a political event 10 months before the primary and 15 months before the general? That sounds impressive to me!

  29. Don, we know we can’t win with you. If we Dems put up two 40-somethings, you’d say we’re embarrassing ourselves by running young whippersnappers without sufficient experience. But come on, you don’t really want to spend 2016 campaigning against HIllary, do you? Aren’t you tired of all the old talking points (Benghazi, e-mails, blah blah blah)? Wouldn’t you really rather have the opportunity to launch the Red Scare all over again against a Democratic nominee who actually describes himself as a socialist? Wouldn’t that be more fun?

  30. Flipper

I hear from a well-placed source that the story on the Sanders event won’t be the lead on KSFY but will air around 10:04 followed by an update on the Josiah’s situation.

  31. grudznick

An unintended consequence of all this homeless latte business is that Parker’s Bistro will suffer mightily at the till.

  32. jerry

I hope that South Dakota’s pee poor economy becomes an issue to someone. Taxable sales only up 1.6 at the end of fiscal 2015? Tell me again how we have a surplus when we are barely above water now. Last year 6.1 for 2014 and now the bottom is falling out. Time for a change in Pierre as well as for the rest of the do nothing republican congress. Bernie has a lot to say about how to make it all come together.

  33. The KSFY story Flipper mentions says more than 100 people attended the Sioux Falls event. It also mentions that the Sioux Falls event raised 500 dollars. If they raised similar amounts at all 3,500 venues nationwide, they could have made $1.75 million. If Sioux Falls was average, that’s not bad for one night.

Now if we can just upgrade from video to live holograms.

Bernie needs to say something to get under Trump’s skin so he can get back on the news. Just when Bernie was making national news, Trump said something stupid and the cable news became all Trump, all the time. Now, the other candidates are heard from only when they criticize Trump and we get Trump’s reaction. Is Trump truly popular or just riding a wave of voter disgust as he puts it to self-serving politicians?
I think Trump is trying to steal Bernie’s message and momentum that partly stems from the Ventura Effect, a voting block that is tired of politics as usual and the regular suspects.

  35. Bill Fleming

CNN poll yesterday has Bernie beating Trump in the general by 20 points… More points than Hillary beats him. Actually, Bernie beat all the R’s they polled him against. Pretty funny.

  36. Deb Geelsdottir

It sounds like great political work is being done by SD’s liberals. Way to go!

    Warren/Sanders is my #1 choice for a 2016 ticket.

Just as important – Get those do-nothing, Party of No, Republican tea baggers out of Congress so this nation can get back to our successful selves!

  37. Lynn

    Roger,

Who thinks there would be a Donald Trump/Bernie Sanders ticket? That’s crazy! They are polar opposites!

Trump’s past and contradictions are already catching up with him and he will self destruct soon. It’s all about the Donald.
