Trump Denies Minnesota Disaster Aid to Repair Riot Damage

Contrary to over a month of dreary law-and-order posturing, Donald Trump apparently doesn’t think the riots and looting that he associates with protests for social justice are that bad. After all, he just denied Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s request for a disaster declaration to help repair the damage done in the Twin Cities after the police-state murder of George Floyd:

Walz asked President Donald Trump to declare a “major disaster” for the state of Minnesota in his request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on July 2. More than 1,500 buildings were damaged by fires, looting and vandalism in the days of unrest that followed Floyd’s May 25 death in Minneapolis police custody, racking up more than $500 million in damages, according to Walz.

The governor’s spokesman, Teddy Tschann, confirmed late Friday that the request for federal aid was denied.

“The Governor is disappointed that the federal government declined his request for financial support,” Tschann said in a statement. “As we navigate one of the most difficult periods in our state’s history, we look for support from our federal government to help us through” [Ryan Faircloth, “Feds Deny Walz’s Request for Aid to Rebuild After Riots,” Minneapolis Star Tribune, 2020.07.11].

Governor Walz says coronavirus has flipped a projected $1.5-billion budget surplus to a $2.4-billion budget deficit, so federal money would really help, but FEMA says Minnesota can handle it alone:

In a statement provided to MPR News on Saturday, a FEMA spokesperson said:

“After a thorough review of Minnesota’s request for a major disaster declaration from extensive fire damage as a result of civil unrest in late May and early June, it was determined that the impact to public infrastructure is within the capabilities of the local and state governments to recover from. The governor has 30 days to appeal that decision” [staff, “Federal Government Denies Minnesota’s Request for Aid to Clean Up, Rebuild in Twin Cities,” MPR News, 2020.07.11].

I guess Donald Trump is only interested in riots as opportunities to deploy his anonymous goons and crack skulls. He’s not interested in doing the hard work of helping communities rebuild. Gee—you’d think a guy who likes building walls would jump at the chance to help build roofs, windows, and doors, too, especially to undo damage done by bad guys he says are out to destroy him and America.

Florida disaster, “Florida reported 15,300 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, shattering state and U.S. records for single-day cases. The statewide total, including non-residents, is now 269,811.

New York previously held the record for most daily cases reported by a state since the pandemic began, announcing 12,274 on April 4.

On Sunday, Florida also broke its record for most tests administered in a day with 99,003. More than 2.5 million people have been tested in the state to date.

The latest positivity rate of new cases statewide was 11.25%, according to the Florida Department of Health. That’s the lowest rate reported in the past two weeks. The highest rate for the same period was 18.35% for cases reported Wednesday.” https://www.orlandosentinel.com/coronavirus/os-ne-florida-coronavirus-sunday-july-12-20200712-y2o2d2s6xbdgbdjag7mdx7g3u4-story.html

How can FEMA deny any state disaster money when the whole country is a disaster. We ain’t seen nothing yet. Thanks GNOem/Thune and especially the little twerp EB5 Short Rounds. Man, we deserve better than you who have done nothing for the state, nothing.

The people who should pay are the criminals who crimed.

  4. jerry 2020-07-12 22:26

Exactly, and that’s why FEMA should pony up.

This is Vengeful Void’s attempt to get back at any Democratic led state. Such a petty little man. BTW, niece Mary’s book hits the stores this week. Bwahahahahaha!!

I wonder if part of it is that he wants to continue to promote his Black “thugs” and anti fascist fantasies? The arsonists who’ve been identified and arrested are all white and connected to white scumacyst groups or have similar ideologies. He may be worried about that making news.

    Nah. He’s just a mean jacka$$.

Excuse me Grudznick, those who crimed? You mean the 4 policemen?

Oh well, just a few more months with this horrible monster as president anyway. On the bright side, Biden is killing it in the Rust Belt, Arizona and Florida, and, get this, Texas has turned Blue in the latest polling there! The Lonestar state has Biden pulling ahead, just barely, over Bone Spurs!
    Amazing!
Thank you Republicans – your outright racism has made it so much easier for Democrats to get votes! Republicans – you have a huge racist problem that you refuse to acknowledge. You basically have become yesterday’s racist Democrats. Unless you seriously overhaul your Party’s beliefs and get a softer Image, you will be losing big states like Texas and Georgia in future elections. Hating on immigrants, the LGBTQ and Black Lives Matter isn’t working for you.

MN is used to paying our own way anyway, unlike our federal dollar guzzling neighbor to the West.

The Minneapolis Police Union under Trump thug Bob Kroll should pick up the tab for its notorious history of police brutality and murder against black men.

Racism has no place in America. Look what just was announced by the Washington football team. “WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington NFL franchise announced Monday that it will drop the “Redskins” name and Indian head logo immediately, bowing to decades of criticism that they are offensive to Native Americans.

A new name must still be selected for one of the oldest and most storied teams in the National Football League, and it was unclear how soon that will happen. But for now, arguably the most polarizing name in North American professional sports is gone at a time of reckoning over racial injustice, iconography and racism in the U.S.”

Oh hell ya. Now Minnesota, sue the federal government for your funding under Civil Rights.

I have heard Tomahawks as a name. I don’t know if that is a step in the right direction because I can image Tomahawk Chops for all.

But I also have heard Red Tails as a reference to the Tuskegee Airmen.

In part the rejection might be related to the fact that the governor refused troop resources he was offered by Trump on the first night that he could’ve put down the riots and stopped this from happening, because he thought they could be seen as an “occupying force.”. Additionally, once troops were deployed later, the govenor’s daughter relayed how rioters could avoid troops that were involved.

  13. Jenny 2020-07-13 21:38

Oh please, spare us the GOP conspiracy theories about the Governor’s daughter, Jim. Of course, Trump denied aide to Walz because Walz didn’t want Federal troops marching in killing more black lives . You’re right on that one.

  14. Debbo 2020-07-14 00:17

I’m with Jenny. Gov. Walz daughter did not play secretive spy. Gotta love conspiracy theories though.

Your first thought about Walz turning down troops is a good one. Cadet Bone Spurs would have liked to feel all macho, sending in the troops. Walz spoiled his egomaniacal plan.

Walz called out the guard on May 28th.

Red Wolves seems to be the trending name for Redskins.
