Yeah, all you marketers we’re hiring to tell South Dakota’s story, and all you tourists from our main target markets of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas, Denver, and Des Moines—you’re not true Americans. And if you dare bring your sissified Soros-ipolitan hides to our great state, don’t dilly-dally in Sioux Falls or Rapid City, ‘cuz they’re getting a little too big (and too brown) to be true America, too. Plan your vacation for Bath, Letcher, Newell, and Batesland.
86% of Americans live in metropolitan areas, counties with or next to cities with 50,000 or more people. Manhart thus contends that only 14% of us are “true” Americans.
Only a minority of American soldiers come from rural areas. Manhart must thus view the majority of our troops as fake Americans.
Non-metro America produces less than 10% of America’s economic output. Over 90% of America’s economy must thus be fake money, and Manhart must only buy trucks made in Groton.
Can you smell the minoritarianism, the call to apartheid? And can you smell the snowflake fragility of a boy from Brown County who can’t accept the notion that people who have grown up in very different circumstances and live very different lives have just as much claim to the American Dream as he does?
Bath, South Dakota, is true America. So are Sisseton and Pine Ridge. So are Aberdeen and Sioux Falls. So are Minneapolis and Buffalo, Seattle and Miami, Detroit and Dallas, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, San Francisco and New York City. Whether we ride tractors or the subway, whether we work with dirt or data, whether we wear plaid or pinstripes or lip-piercings or all three, we are all Americans. If you can’t grasp that principle, you cannot truly represent America.
The thing about Twitter is that you get to show your stupidity with a limited number of words. What Manhart may not know, because he’s a youngster without much life experience, is that no matter how big or small a town you live in, you live in a vital part of America. Everyplace and everyone is a key part of America. Further, there is no “true America.” There is America, which consists of all of us, whether we live in NYC or Bath.
Perhaps it is better to say “The Truest Americans live outside the big cities.” Outside Sioux Falls, too.
How can something be truer than true?
Grudz is another youngster without much life experience. In South Dakota, I lived in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City. I loved each of these places, and valued the people that lived in them. Yeah, some of them were a pain in the ass, but they made life interesting. What I didn’t like was the haters and the elitists.

“Last bastion” connotes a pretty pessimistic view of America, doesn’t it? You want that sort of pessimistic loser to be your representative?
I’ve never been so down on the country as a whole that I needed to identify a “last bastion,” from which to “defend” the country. Yeah, if I lived in Mariupol, Ukraine, that phrase may be appropriate. Maybe it was appropriate for the Capitol police, fending off the January 6 insurrection, as well as the brave election officials fending off the Trump attempted coup. Those folks might have been considered the last bastion of ttrue America. I wonder, though, if Manhart would agree. He strikes me as being more of a supporter of a dead America.

As Donald Pay notes, Manhart is a young feller, someone trying to find his way as a politician in a state that would have him (he was born in Minnesota, I believe). Likely owing to his college years in Michigan either under the sway of the College Republicans or Young Republican National Federation, he paints and sees himself as godsend to South Dakota. At best, like Hillary Clinton who was at one time elected president of her College Republican chapter at Wellesley College, he’ll see the error of his ways in the event of an unexpected historical contingency (for Hillary, it was the VietNam War). At worst, he’ll end up the next Karl Rove, Rick Santorum, or Roger Stone. Or better yet, self-destruct and fizzle like Madison Cawthorn.
Structural factors in South Dakota will continue to foster these hopefuls, and it’s the structural factors that must be identified for change to occur, although that alone doesn’t guarantee things will change. Especially when a major factor is brain drain out of the state by those with a broader education, as well as the ability of the State of South Dakota to attract same.
Mr. Manhart seems like the kind of guy who would drive to Minneapolis, kill a bunch of people at a Planned Parenthood then expect to be welcomed at the dessert table in Heaven.

Today at the Conservatives with Common Sense Breakfast, the topic of the debates will be “why there are so many haters amongst the alt-left libbies and the whackadoodles: does being on the fringe make one a hater or does being a hater drive one to the fringe?”
“Last bastion”—yes, that phrase shows an effort to conjure up images of war, desperation, and justification for Manhart’s radical Trumpist tactics. It fits with the persecution complex that characterizes the still-majority white Christians who think that they, in their position of power, are the oppressed. It fits with the bunker mentality that keeps Manhart and other South Dakotans from welcoming new people and new ideas.
Well, Grudz, when I consider how the alt-right uses fabricated bovine exhaust to paint the left, a quote from Detective Martin Riggs comes to mind when considering how they feel about me: “Hate ’em back. Works for me!” Seems it was the frat boy, G.W. Bush that started the “you are either with me or against me” era of “cooperation” from the right. I have to do it their way or we just stop.
