South Dakota Needs More Shots; Noem Goes to Vegas Again

We bought her a sauna; you’d think she’d stay home more.

For the third time in five months, Governor Kristi Noem is off trying to be a big shot in Las Vegas. She spoke yesterday to the gun industry lobby at the Shot Show, hosted by firearms industry trade lobbying group National Shooting Sports Foundation:

Noem did manage to bop in to her own Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Pierre yesterday morning before catching her plane to Vegas. But Noem’s trip appears to have kept her from getting back into the saddle today, leaving Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden to fill in for her at a regular press briefing:

Tacitly suggesting there’s no urgent problem requiring the Governor’s attention back home, Lt. Gov. Rhoden told reporters that South Dakota is “in relatively good shape” with respect to coronavirus hospitalizations and available hospital beds. At their own press conference in Sioux Falls, Dr. Mike Wilde of Sanford Health and Dr. David Basel of Avera Health said the shots they need the public to get to help the hospitals deal with the highest number of covid cases reported in South Dakota yet are not the shots Noem is promoting in Vegas:

“We are making harder and harder choices every day,” Basel said. “Those choices get harder every day as those numbers go up.”

Basel said every time a patient is discharged or “way too often” dies, a discussion happens about which person is the next sickest to fill an empty bed.

“We need the public’s help,” Basel said. “We need their help in several ways.”

Basel called for people who have been vaccinated to get the booster shot. He said people who have been vaccinated but not boosted only have 30% protection against the Omicron variant.

“You really need that booster to bump you back up to 70-80% effectiveness,” Basel said. “We have plenty of vaccine supply. If you want a booster, we’ll figure out a way to get it to you.”

…Wilde said unselfish actions of getting vaccinated and boosted will help hospital capacity and health care workers the most.

“We continue to need your help,” Wilde said. “In the hospital, we see those who are greatly affected by COVID-19” [Eric Mayer, “‘These Folks Are Very Ill’: Hospitals Ask for Help Slowing Covid-19 Spread,” KELO-TV, 2022.01.20].

In addition to getting our shots, good pandemic sense says we should mask up, avoid travel, avoid large crowds, and not hang around indoors with people outside our bubbles of regular interaction.

Instead of promoting any of those precautions, Kristi Noem is off promoting guns in Las Vegas.

Related Reading: New analysis from Everytown for Gun Safety finds that looser gun laws correspond to higher rates of death by firearms. South Dakota is a bit of an outlier in this study: Everytown says we have the 46th weakest gun laws, but our rate of shooting each other to death, 13.6 casualties per 100,000 people, is near the national average. Either South Dakotans are better duckers or worse shots… both of which appear to apply to Governor Noem.

Oh, let’s go there. Cowgirl Noem needs to introduce a bill paying for issuing a gun to every highschool freshman and mandate carrying in classes. How else can she keep the schools safe from the CRT, trans-students, socialist teachers? Cowgirl Noem should consult the example of Lewis’s needle gun taken on the discovery expedition – that every freshmans’ gun hold 22 rounds, being semi-automatic so they are able to clear a classroom in 30 seconds of socialists, LBTQ, and CRT advocates.

Of course, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was a MILITARY expedition, not a private right to bear arms expedition.

One can bet that cowgirl Noem solicited the lobby and finance firepower of the ammosexuals to ram her Meade County range through the corrupt SD legislature.

I sit down to a poker table with Kristi Noem.

She turns to you, Mr. Lansing, and she looks you up, and she looks you down and says “You look like three scoops of mashed potatoes in a two scoop suit” and then flips her cards over showing the winning hand, scoops the giant pile of chips towards her bosom, and leaves you sitting there with your piddly pile to play on with the now wiped-out Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth using your 3 last $20 chips.

There is a much higher probability of taking a death delivering hot one in Rapid City than the state average shows (or catching a murder with a firearm case depending on how you look at it).
According to areavibes.com, in 2021, Rapid City’s murder rate per 100,000 people is 16.6. The national murder average for 2021 per100k was only 6.5. Our state average was 4.5/100k… two other data websites I checked stated exact averages. As a Rapid City resident on the wild side of the tracks, I hear gunfire report daily. 13 murders in 2021 is a fraction of the actual attempted fatal shootings. Cory’s summation is still spot on because that number would be way higher if there was better aim, and targets weren’t so lean and slippery. God help us after the magat range is built and shooters become better marksmen. Our governor sure is a glutton for dead South Dakotans.

It would probably be tough for me to get elected in SD because guns would not be a high priority. Sure, I own guns and I like to hunt, but guns are not important enough to me to even be on the agenda.

There are much more pressing things to deal with: covid, getting kids smart, helping provide equal opportunity for everyone, etc.

Enough with the caveman stuff (guns, war, etc).

Monitoring hospital beds is only part of what is needed.
To treat Covid patients monochromal antibody treatment is needed and that is in short supply.
There is a blood shortage, so if you need surgery or blood transfusions, where is the blood?
I’m hearing that other routine medical products are in short supply. With the overwhelming infection rate, that impact everything from raw material supplies, manufacturing and shipping.
Staffing is a major issue. It is not just medical staff that is sick, but medical workers families get sick as well and medical workers need to take care of their families.

I monitor Covid patients in the small-town hospitals. This week I have seen small-town hospitals with several patients. That to me is concerning as that is telling me covid is spreading to the rural areas and those rural areas have some of the lowest vaccination rates. Where will those patients go for advanced care if the big hospitals like in Sioux Falls are full?

NOem is just another fraud riding on the backs of taxpayers from Democratic states. Hey man, here is who bailed our sorry behinds out including ol’ AWOL NOem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZyaREUfnh0&t=1s

Appreciate what we now have and thank a Democrat for our second chance.

Gun ownership is 49% of the people. Guns are their cocaine.

Why should a minority push us around?

  10. cibvet 2022-01-20 23:52

The future of America is much brighter as the ranks of the un-vaccinated continue to thin their herd.
Hopefully the collateral damage they cause can be kept to a minimum.

We can invent a better capitalism, a newer capitalism that will add our ideas to the successful
ideas in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and other countries.

We can be 5 or 10X more prosperous than today.

Republican party in power? Temporary only.

A greater all inclusive economy, 5 or 10 times bigger than today, for all us? Yes. It’s on the menu, we just ordered it, and it’s coming out of the kitchen in 5 minutes!

    We are the BIG change.

Did Rhoden actually say SD is in relatively good shape when it comes to health care services despite covid? That is not how I understand what Avera and Sanford said.
Rhoden says “they” are monitoring the situation. I hope so.

  13. O 2022-01-21 07:36

Rhoden’s quote made me think of the old joke: Other than that, how did you enjoy the play Mr.s Lincoln?

  14. Guy 2022-01-21 08:07

Cory, you sure have a gift for wit and words while still presenting factually-grounded analysis. Thank you for the analysis and humor to top it all off.

I kinda like America’s governor out and about telling her story and selling her basket of bull stuff. Then, when I go out and about telling what it is like to live amount white privileged domestic terrorists on and near my home reservation a person or two will have a media post showing the pride of SD parading around talking her silliness and stupidity. I just say, “see”!

I am tempted to mention the inept inbred Republicans controlling the state dome in Pierre and clowning around in Washington. Tempted.

While the inbreds are playing government in Pierre the pride of SD continues her campaigning for a pageant or office, as both yield the same results for the pride; recognition and forced audience.

I can see why the pride of SD doesn’t want to be in the state as that dang virus is infecting and killing people throughout the state. Better to stay away until someone gets that virus under control.

2022 is finally here. Election time. See what the fools of the state do this time; RINO and Pride and what’s his name from Mitchell want back in. Local elections using the sparrow will be telling.

    Even accidental trump pug loss in the wilderness rounds seems to be seeking affirmation with his poll of the season asking for input for whatever reason. He asked;
Do you agree with my recent comments on the 2020 election?
    ( )Agree
    ( )Disagree
( )Not aware of your comments
There should be one more response:
( ) Failed twice to protect democracy

    November cannot come soon enough.

  16. Guy 2022-01-21 08:19

ABC, I wholeheartedly agree with you that: “We are the Change,” with a capital “C”. I’ve said it before that we get the government we deserve through falling for rock stars & fairy tales. We eat it up more and more. When we should have healthy bran cereal for breakfast we instead opt for fruity pebbles full of sugar and no nutrients. So, unfortunately we continue to opt for a government in Pierre that funds special interest “emergency” projects like shooting ranges and indoor rodeo arenas that are more exciting than meeting our basic “boring” needs by funding more infrastructure projects to benefit everyone. Why stay in a “boring” state like South Dakota when you have the tax payer resources to fly-off to exciting Las Vegas to chase more media attention and keep-up campaign appearances? That’s more fun and a rush like eating a bowl of sugary fruity pebbles. Bran flakes are boring like us in fly-over country.

What are your thoughts on the Nuremberg Doctor Trials?

    Don’t need them?

We should just experiment on people?

I lost count at quadrupling down.

    Incredible.

Why even Adele canceled her trip to Vegas because of Omicron.

  22. Allen Jeris 2022-01-21 13:24

I thought Joe Biden was going to shut down the virus?

  23. mike from iowa 2022-01-21 14:08

drumpf said it would magically disappear. So what? He never took it seriously because he is smarter than everyone.

  24. Allen Jeris 2022-01-21 14:09

Yep, which is why I don’t put my trust in it he government. I don’t care who’s in there.

  25. cibvet 2022-01-21 15:32

Allen Jeris– Biden wrongly assumed that trump followers were smart enough to get vaccinated.
I’m quite comfortable in letting them die with my sympathy going to the collateral damage they cause.

  26. Allen Jeris 2022-01-21 16:02

    Zzzz

  27. bearcreekbat 2022-01-21 17:06

If someone says they “don’t put my trust in [the] government. I don’t care who’s in there,” that raises the question of who they might trust in anarchy. After all anarchy is the alternative to government
and without government there would be no arbitrary labels to identify unknown individuals as untrustworthy. How would this person know which stranger to arbitrarily label as untrustworthy?

The Queen of Covid 19 needs to cut back on her lip fillers.
A flight I was on in 1990 was diverted to the Harry Reid international (?) airport. I spent too much time in a tawdry, noisy, stupid, repulsive Las Vegas dump.
The more I think about it, this defines Kristi Lynn and her penchant for Las Vegas.

2601 reasons for Noem Noes and Does Nothing to stay in Vegas……

COVID-19 in South Dakota: 2,183 total new cases; Death toll rises to 2,601; Active cases at 35,196

She looks like a killer without killer looks.

  30. Bonnie B Fairbank 2022-01-21 20:32

As a New citizen of South Dakota. I can only say that I love the people, I love the History,I love the sense of pride in our country here. What I find trouble some is a Governor who over rides her constituency. They made it clear on the bill to legalize Marijuana that it was in their approval. She acted as a over bareing grandmother and told the states adults to “Sit Down and shut up! ” she knows best.
As a citizen of this Beautiful State I plan to vote against her and her autocratic ways. This is a country that is ruled by it’s citizens not the people we ask to see to the running of OUR state not her dictatorship. It is not her place to tell another woman HOW SHE CAN TEND TO HER OWN BODY.
She should start to be concerned that her time in the spotlight is gonna come to an end. I am not a Democrat nor am I a Republican I am an Independent person who votes for the best person for the job. A person who talks to the people that ask said person for the best representation of what WE want.

The Next Big Thing Will Come from We Liberals, of course …
What if the government required, say, software companies that wanted federal contracts to employ at least 10 percent of their workers in rural areas?

“Could you actually have projects and teamwork and interaction in this digital sphere that at least reduces some of the tension and anxiety that Trump exploited?” – Congressman Ro Khanna D- Silicon Valley (home to Apple and Intel)

He’s painfully aware of how his proposals could be lumped together with much-ridiculed ideas like teaching homeless people to become software engineers.

So, Khanna rattles off an array of initiatives that would harness the resources of the federal government to the agility of the private sector — building “digital grant colleges” inside the country’s 112 land-grant universities to teach applied technology skills, underwriting apprenticeship programs at tech companies, creating a “national digital corps” as a kind of Peace Corps for rural America.

“It’s got to be more fundamental,” he said.

  35. John Dale 2022-01-24 20:40

My sincere informed advice is to stop pushing the shots immediately.

  36. Porter Lansing 2022-01-24 21:27

John Dale – Stop avoiding the fact that this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated.

Deep State research shows that over 85% of those who claim to be unvaccinated are lying, just to keep Biden from a victory. Those who really are unvaxed have one foot in the grave.

  37. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2022-01-25 07:02

Stop pushing the shots and the pandemic runs even longer and does even more damage. If every political leader said, every day, “Get your shots,” more people would do so, and fewer people would die.

Getting shots is practical “pro-life” action that nearly every American can take, for free.
