At yesterday’s Oval Office meeting of murderous dictators, ABC News journalist Mary Bruce asked, Is it appropriate, Mr. President, for your family to be doing business in Saudi Arabia while you’re president? Is that a conflict of interest?”
The American despot did not answer the question of conflict and appropriateness. He just lied:
I have nothing to do with the family business. I have left and when I’ve devoted 100 percent of my energy what my family does is fine. They do business all over, they’ve done very little with Saudi Arabia actually. I’m sure they could do a lot and anything they’ve done has been very good. I hope one of the first acts of the next president is to claw back every dollar from the obscene and unconstitutional profiteering of the of Presidency by Donald Trump. This corruption barely even makes the news anymore because it has become so common. I can understand a party-friendly congress rubber stamping a political agenda, but rubber stamping personal corruption should be a bright line — even for the sycophants.
Black-letter law is needed to give teeth to the norms we have taken for granted as enough for guardrails in the past.
