Curriculum Developers Condemn Hillsdale Social Studies Standards

You know, South Dakota has professionals who develop curriculum. Governor Kristi Noem didn’t pick any of them to rewrite South Dakota’s K-12 social studies standards, and it shows.

Those professionals at the South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development have weighed in on the Hillsdale standards with this written comment submitted for today’s fourth and final public hearing before the Board of Education Standards:

Dear Members of the South Dakota Board of Educational Standards,

The South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development Executive Board opposes the Proposed Social Studies Standards. The South Dakota Supervision of Curriculum Development requests the members of the State Board of Educational Standards vote not to accept the March 30th version of the standards at their upcoming meeting on April 17th in Pierre. The South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development share this position and remain united with all professional organizations who comprise the School Administrators of South Dakota, the 27+ local public school boards, the South Dakota Educational Association, and the 940 formal opposing comments submitted to the Department of Education by South Dakotans. The South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development agrees with all nine tribes in South Dakota and the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association that have passed formal resolutions opposing the 2022 proposed social studies standards.

As South Dakota Curriculum leaders, we bring a unique professional perspective on the Proposed Social Studies Standards. As you know, many of our members have provided opposing testimony during public comment, either in person or in writing. Among our greatest concerns are:

  • The developmental appropriateness for our learners.
  • The lack of consultation and partnership with South Dakota educators in development of the proposed standards.
  • The time required for professional development and amount of local resources and adjustments necessary for such a dramatic shift in the proposed standard adoption.
  • The scope and sequence of the proposed standards lacks scaffolding and depth of knowledge.

Due to these reasons and many others outlined by the opponents, the South Dakota Association of Supervision of Curriculum Development recommend the Board of Educational Standards propose an alternative motion to request the submittal of the SD Social Studies Standards Revised (July 26, 2021 Version) by the Secretary of Education for review as required by SDCL 13-3-89.

SDASCD remains solution-focused on a resolution inclusive of South Dakota educators as engaged, respected members of the standard adoption committee to positively impact the learners in South Dakota.

Respectfully Submitted, SDASCD Executive Board [links added; SDASCD, public comment to Board of Education Standards, retrieved 2023.04.17]

Not developmentally appropriate, not developed appropriately with South Dakota educators, not practical, not deep—maybe we should listen to the people who spend more time than anyone else in South Dakota developing curriculum and go back to standards that teachers can actually use to help our kids become good citizens.

It would be interesting to see how much it costs taxpayers to help Kristi “I am the NRA” Noem develop a bogus curriculum that panders to Trumpian racists so she can add another worthless campaign gimmick to her arsenal. We know she paid more than $200,000 to the clown from Hillsdale for starters. There seems to be a lot of tax dollars being wasted to conduct reviews and public meetings, none of which results in a qualified education organization endorsing Noem’s politically-motivated curriculum changes.

Noem has zero chance of gaining any traction in the GOP primaries, yet this joke of a curriculum will ruin our state’s education system for the next generation and make it a national laughing stock. Are there no adults left in Pierre to tell the Snowflake Queen she’s wrong and needs to knock it off?

The Hillside Standards would not be an issue if either Jamie Smith or Billie Sutton would have been Governor!

Greetings ladies and gentlemen. He hani waste.
I would like to thank you all for giving me the opportunity to implore the board to reject the proposed social studies standards before the final decision is made.
My name is All Mammal and I’m here for South Dakota’s future. The future tends to be guided by the past. The future is also guided by the present. And presently, when 5 and six year olds start attending public school, they’re initiated into their citizen hood. Which is a big deal. These green years immerse them
Into full inclusion. They become a part of the daily rhythms just like the weather forecasters, road workers, custodians. They know the names of classmates who raise and lower the Flag in the school yard, as well as the mail carriers and even the female carriers(: Our kids are so excited to learn and perform their duties as capable citizens. They yearn for inclusivity in these daily duties.
Civics and social competence are vital and young people in South Dakota need to continue having meaningful roles in society in order to be proficient in working together to ensure a long lasting democracy.-Where Oceti Sacowin is integrated, never assimilated! The recently written, immaculately scrubbed white social studies standards would pitifully make our youngsters’ new membership status obsolete.
Let me explain: kindergartners and first graders are yet to master literacy and penmanship. This makes taking down notes on the Persian wars simply unlikely and reading about Thermopylae in a textbook far-fetched. Lectures on the Roman triumvirates are meaningless to people who can’t read or write the words in order to retain them or even refer back to them.

By excluding young students from active participation in their own education and the relevant geography and culture in which we all live, we are not teaching anything in social learning nor the principles of civics.

Please do not demote our children by adopting these foreign social studies standards. .
Teachers are the professionals, and apply the most current research-based practices accepted in their field to serve the entire community. Regional native geography, history, and Medicine are relevant for the Social Studies Standards in South Dakota.

I pray you have faith in South Dakota educators with diverse backgrounds to continue their work as curators of the standards.

With our support, South Dakota public schools will surely guide our students through the past and the present so our children will embrace the future. And the future promises to be worthwhile. Gracias. Pilamaya

Wish them luck in Pierre today and keep fingers crossed for victory in the fight for our kids’ education and our teachers’ integrity.

  4. Come on folks Kristi has to keep up with Ronnie the short stop in the dubious race for fearless leader. Just bone up on the Free Will Baptists for your curriculum, and get ready for Kristi’s race. You’ll be rid of her for the next year or so. Maybe forever if it’s the will of Trump. Ronnie has to settle with Disney world. I’m sure he has movies planned for the children of America, can’t wait.

Why the need to denounce “WOKE”?
Because the term “woke” comes from the African American Vernacular English (AAVE) slang phrase “stay woke,” which means to stay aware of and informed about social and political issues. The use of the term in mainstream culture has been attributed to the Black Lives Matter movement and its emphasis on social justice and activism.

I have loved and listened to Erykah Badu since the first time I looked at MTV. She explains to Mr. Melber that her woke, which she sang about being aware of your environment, health, relationships, etc has been hijacked. She isn’t bitter about that. She keeps it moving because she is a damn good artist. She accurately simplifies this hijacked woke to now mean BLACK. DeSkanktits isn’t speaking code when he says Florida is where woke goes to die. People who hate on woke are truly saying they are anti-black.

  7. grudznick

That is too long a blogging to read. I saw a lot of woke chatter in there so I know it is bad. It is probably very bad.
grudznick does notice that the dissenting fellows, with whom Mr. H seems to agree, were against “out-of-state influence.” What say some of you out-of-state fellows to that?

  8. P. Aitch

The internet has no state lines. grudznichts boundaries are in his mind.

  9. Gee grudz I’m going to bed soon so I can be woke in the morning for a delicious breakfast.

  10. grudznick

    Good night, Mr. Anderson.

  11. grudznick

Mr. P.h, that is the fear of those fellow who, unlike grudznick, don’t want voting over the internets. They fear out-of-state name-callers will hack in and vote as their dead grandmothers, and other suck scumbuckery.

  12. Actually I’m still awake grudz, fully woke. Joe Groves and Kristi got it through. Now you South Dakotan’s can transfer a few million dollars to that wonderful religious institution in Michigan. You could have had Augustana do it right? I guess their too left leaning. I know who’s CEO. I’m wondering if Noem gets a kickback Ian? Just look at what Clarence gets for for his crowing on behalf of Harlan. Nice to see the magas still spreading the grift around.

  13. P. Aitch

Good for you, grudznichts. The liberal side of your brain is beginning to become dominant. You owe your societal progress to we of the bloggings.
    You’re Welcome

  14. grudznick

Thank you, Mr. P.h. That grudznick is a kind and gentle soul probably contributes to why I have been voted the “Most Loved Conservative with Common Sense” at this here blogging place 5 years in a row.

  15. Arlo Blundt

Grudznick–I’m an out of stater now, as I have no property left in South Dakota or residence. I wouldn’t think of submitting testimony on this mess but think I’m perfectly in my rights to comment on this opinion site. I think Cory does a great job of keeping the door to the “Market Place of Ideas” open. You keep trying to slam the door so you can cling to your West River bred, gravy coated, macho nonsense. Get Woke, Life is short.

  16. James Cadwell

I have worked diligently to create a Native American curriculum that compliments the state social studies curriculum. It appears to me that the students know more about what they want than the Governor. Students are asking for the true history of South Dakota everyday in class. If you would like me to come to your school to incorporate these DLNakota standards please feel free to ask. This material is presented in a non defensive manner. After all it is our history.

  17. Richard Schriever

So, grudz, being aware of your environment, health, relationships, etc. (being woke) is to you a bad thing – probably a very bad thing – huh?

  18. O

I have to admire the Right’s ability to demonize all language that challenges their unearned white privilege. Critical Race Theory, woke, history . . . That a democracy shares its power among the governed never sits well with the entrenched oligarchs of the US.

  19. P. Aitch

Very well said, O. Did y’all know Hillsdale College advocates that the nation needs a “Red Caesar” who will cut through the what they call constitutional gridlock and impose order by suspending the Constitution?
The guru of this push for a president seizing dictatorial powers to overthrow what far-right activists see as a “deep state” of liberals — corrupting institutions ranging from government agencies to the media to large corporations and the Pentagon — is a professor of politics at Michigan’s ultraconservative Hillsdale College, Kevin Slack. (Yes, the same Hillsdale that GOP-led South Dakota state government is hiring to whitewash its curriculums.) – AXIOS
