Grand Gateway Closed for “Spring Cleaning” Until May 16?

Uh oh—looks like nobody, Indian or otherwise, can get a room at Rapid City’s most openly racist motel. Nick Tilsen, leader of NDN Collective, finds a note on the door of the hotel his group is suing saying the inn and its bar are “closed to the public for Spring Cleaning“:

The Grand Gateway’s website doesn’t say anything about closing for spring cleaning, but when I click Book Now on their Guest Rooms page, the booking calendar doesn’t show any available rooms until May 16:

Seven weeks—I’m afraid it might take longer than that to clean up the racist stain left by owners Connie and Mike Uhre.

  1. Stan Adelstein used to own the Northern Hills Holiday Inn: is the Grand Gateway an Adelstein property, too and the Uhres just lease it?

Spring cleaning by whom? No one wants the taint of stank from the place. I think a renaming and sale of that miserable place will be forthcoming. The light has been shown on these two cockroaches, ol’ Connie and her spawn so they will have to find another fever swamp like Florida to inhabit in their retirement.

Geesh, where did these two goons come from in the first place.

“Spring cleaning” is a euphemism for “we are shut down until the tourist season begins and unsuspecting tourists statrt dropping in off the interstate.”

Shutting down to wait out the self imposed “SHT Storm” to die down.

The original message taped to the door said “Do too the kiling that took place at this here Grand Get away on March 19 2022 at 4am in the morning we no long alow enny Dusky Saviges on propity. Please excuse enny inconience.”

  6. Does any other motel in Rapid City shut down for a whole month and a half before the main tourism season starts?

Bed bugs are hard to get rid of.

They are indeed, Mr. Nemec. So is ignorance, racism, vileness, and prideful stupidity.

Ridding a dwelling of bedbugs is easier than ridding an individual of the character traits listed by Bonnie

All bedbugs will eventually die, racism can survive for generations.

  11. You know Nick when we first moved to Highmore when I was 10 in 1963, there was a sign on one business that said no Indians allowed which really peed me off. I always liked when the Ft. Thompson kids swam at the swimming pool because most people left when the bus arrived. When I was in college my friend Larry Hamlin another Highmoron like me had a job teaching at the school in Plankinton, yes that school, and was so sad that the only bar in town had the same no Indians allowed sign and it was the ONLY bar. Now this in Rapid when I’m 69. You are absolutely correct about the generations thing. It’s always just barely buried and leaps out whenever it’s allowed. It just has to be stopped and very loudly.

Where are those people from? Even the most racist South Dakotans would know better than that. Their business is annailiated & they have no one to blame but themselves.
