TenHaken Orders SF City Workers to Wear Masks

While coronavirus-positive and contagious Donald Trump comes back to his workplace and right away takes off his mask, with Republican legislators cavalierly crowding the Capitol to make sure Governor Kristi Noem got some live and unmasked applause for her limp Special Session speech, the leader of Sioux Falls is ordering all of the public workers under him to wear masks on the job:

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken says city employees will need to wear masks in all common areas, when they are interacting with the public, and when social distancing isn’t possible.

He and others are also calling on the public, not just in the city, but in the region to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

There are currently more than 1,000 active cases in the Sioux Falls area and 110 hospitalizations, according to the city website.

Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken isn’t mandating masks for the public at this time, but he is calling on people to be diligent in slowing the spread.

“I will continue to rely on personal decision-making both by individuals, but as well as businesses and employers who have a responsibility as well. I will say, however, that as we move through this current case surge, we each need to do our part to manage COVID-19,” Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said [Kelli Volk, “Sioux Falls Mayor: ‘We Each Need to Do Our Part [to] Manage Covid-19,” KELO-TV, 2020.10.05].

It’s a sad situation when we can only look to the White House and the South Dakota Legislature for object lessons in how not to do our part to keep our friends and co-workers and all of America strong and healthy. Keep your mask on, neighbors. Keep your guard up, keep away from crowds… and keep your distance from the knuckleheads in our federal and state governments who don’t.

What is the point for the mayor of a city to call for the city employees of that city to protect themselves and not at least ask the citizens to do the same? That is an example of the type of leadership that got us in the position we are in, don t ignored the most dangerous threat to our country in my lifetime and proceeded to blame China for his ineptness while 215,000 thousand American lives have been lost. This is a country that sacrificed dearly through world wars, and the great depression because we had leaders with strength and courage. The only attributes our current leaders have is selfishness and greed. I have never been less proud of our country than I am at this time.

One size does not fit all, it goes without saying, but considering the current outbreak in Paris, theirs is the most intelligent possible response that Paris might muster considering their current situation. Are either Noem are TenHaken prepared to admit this might be a possible and future step that might be taken, whether in Sioux Falls or elsewhere in South Dakota, if not South Dakota as a whole? If not, are they are nothing but myopic? Masking some is a baby-step as long as others can yet infect the many. I can’t believe TenHaken is so ditzy as to think his is in any way an intelligent address to the problem we face. Noem, on the other hand, is stuck in the cornfield where she longs to be and is most effective.

No man is an island. Everyman is a part of the main. To fail to protect oneself is to fail to protect others.

I was down at the Minnehaha courthouse yesterday, paying my taxes, and I would say one-third of the people in line weren’t wearing masks, nor social distancing. A woman and her teenaged son went from the Treasurer’s window to the Auditor’s window, in a long, involved conversations at each. Both were maskless, and the son was continually yawning – without covering his face. We are screwed.
