SDBMOE: First Coronavirus Vaccines Could Come in November

On Thursday, the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners sent an e-mail to various members of South Dakota’s health care community signaling that our medical licensing board thinks a coronavirus vaccine is imminent:

From: SDBMOE <SDBMOE@state.sd.us
Date: August 27, 2020 at 2:35:48 PM CDT
To: Undisclosed recipients:;
Subject: Preparation for covid vaccination

In order to prepare for anticipated covid immunization around the state, the South Dakota Department of Health would like to share some basic information in case you are contacted to assist facilities in your communities with orders for vaccination in your patients when vaccine becomes available.

  1. COVID vaccine is being developed and is going through all the phases of testing that typically happens before a vaccine is used. Monitoring of effectiveness and safety will continue after licensure
  2. COVID Vaccine may arrive as early as November to initiate vaccination of high risk populations, ie Long Term Care residents and staff; healthcare workers at highest risk for exposure; and essential services such as EMS, Police and Fire services
  3. Early supply of vaccine will be extremely limited
  4. Vaccine may be a one dose or a two dose series. Vaccines are not interchangeable and if two doses are required, both doses must be the same vaccine
  5. Cold storage of vaccine will most likely be required
  6. Early in 2021 there may be sufficient supply of vaccine to meet demand and we will be using a wide range of vaccinators from both the public and private sector

Mary Carpenter, MD [SDBMOE e-mail, 2020.08.27]

November? Donald Trump said he thinks we could have a vaccine by that time, but we know how good he is at coronavirus-related predictions.

Nonetheless, earlier this month, Reuters reported that Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, “is confident that at least one of the six vaccines funded by the federal government’s vaccine research initiative “will be shown to be safe and effective by the end of the year.” SDBMOE’s note also fits with Collins’s statement that the first batches of vaccine will go to high-risk patients and front-line health care workers.

This swift vaccine development is unprecedented and, for some scientists, alarming:

“I’m more and more concerned that things are getting done in a rush,” says Beate Kampmann, who directs the Vaccine Centre at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (and whose work email account was subject to a failed hack in July). On 13 August, the editor-in-chief of the journal Science issued a call to order. “Short cuts in testing for vaccine safety and efficacy endanger millions of lives in the short term and will damage public confidence in vaccines and in science for a long time to come,” wrote H Holden Thorp.

He went on to point out that the stakes are higher than with unproven therapies such as hydroxychloroquine, because a vaccine is given to healthy people. “Approval of a vaccine that is harmful or isn’t effective could be leveraged by political forces that already propagate vaccine fears,” he warned [Laura Spinney, “How the Race for a Covid-19 Vaccine Is Getting Dirty,” UK Guardian, 2020.08.30].

We need a vaccine that works as quickly as possible. We also need global cooperation to ensure everyone gets that vaccine in a timely and equitable fashion, unlike the jungle competition states faced for medical supplies at the beginning of the pandemic amidst the Trump Administration’s denialist incompetence.

Right – give the least tested, least proven vaccine with the highest associated (due to the big rush) risk of ineffectiveness or even having dangerous side effects to the people we MOST need to assure can function (emergency responders and health care professionals) and the least likely to sue and “least productive” (EXPENDABLES in nursing homes).

Good grief, is our entire culture now shot through and through with Big Brother’s minions?

That is a bad joke and we all know it. Here is a fact about our failed economy

“Reuters) – Casino operator MGM Resorts International informed its staff on Friday it would lay off 18,000 furloughed employees in the United States as the coronavirus-induced travel curbs hurt its operations.

The company will start the process on Monday, according to a letter from Chief Executive Officer Bill Hornbuckle to employees and seen by Reuters. MGM employed nearly 52,000 fulltime and 18,000 part-time people in the United States as of Dec. 31.

“Federal law requires companies to provide a date of separation for furloughed employees who are not recalled within six months. Regrettably, August 31, marks (that) date,” Hornbuckle said in the letter.”

Four more years or seconds of trump and we will not even be able to gamble. Have you checked out the lottery here? Used to be 40 million now 20 million and I don’t think there is money to even pay that.

So this time we really, really, REALLY mean it, that there is a vaccine just around the corner. The water has been so muddied by the W.H. political machine that no one knows if the information is coming from a medical agency or straight out of Trump’s… we’ll say, gut. I’m still waiting on the check from Mexico.

Here it is, a quart of “hydroxychloroquine” Yes indeed, here is the vaccine we’ve all been waiting for. Take a few quart doses of this, stick a light bulb up your arse and sleep on a My Pillow while watching Fox News. Dang sure will cure that trump virus and by November, no less.

Any chance SDBMOE operates like the state banking cabal that met and approved a one time high interest rate loan for a non-bank that had no bank experience for failed Northern Beef boondoggle, or whatever it was called?

This country can not even get a covid 19 test that is reliable after 6 months, so I am supposed to believe that a vaccine can be done quicker and more safe. Then we will inoculate the very people who are supposed to care for us, with an untested vaccine. This country is full of some very stupid leaders. I question every day why I offered my life for a country this screwed up.

  7. jerry

cibvet, I’ll tell you why you put it all on the line, your bro’s. That’s right, something bigger than ourselves, those guys who looked us in the eye without a word, that knowing look, that we wouldn’t let them down. That if they took one, we would bring them home, that’s why we offered it all up, something bigger than us.

We’ve always had stupid leaders, but we’ve always had great squad leaders that learned the ways. We always had good Lt’s when they listened to the guys who had been there and could give advise. Where this country has failed is that those that lead now have never led when the crap is coming at you like a freight train. So what do we do? We keep on patrolling, we keep looking for the answers that never come to a grunt, but we keep searching. trump is not the answer, he is the sworn enemy of every person who has ever put on a uniform. I believe Joe Biden will help us get home and out of this ambush.

For a more global and perhaps more realistic view of the state of the vaccine landscape see the WHO website:

“The goal of COVAX is by the end of 2021 to deliver two billion doses of safe, effective vaccines that have passed regulatory approval and/or WHO prequalification. These vaccines will be offered equally to all participating countries, proportional to their populations, initially prioritising healthcare workers then expanding to cover vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. Further doses will then be made available based on country need, vulnerability and COVID-19 threat. The COVAX Facility will also maintain a buffer of doses for emergency and humanitarian use, including dealing with severe outbreaks before they spiral out of control.”

Great link DaveFn, I look to that and to news from Europe and China to keep up with the vaccine testing and also for the covid testing itself. Thanks for posting the link.

  10. grudznick

Mr. H, mark this down in your #4Science category.

    There won’t be a vaccine.

  11. Jake

Jerry, your answer to cibvet is right on and I agree 100%. Without confidence in those in charge, the ones who follow will only do so reluctantly, if at all. That’s the reason for incompetent platoon leaders in ‘Nam being “fracked” with a grenade in the dark of night. This fall we need to elect someone who can put some trust back into government-not treat it like “The Apprentice”!

  12. Debbo

“endanger millions of lives in the short term and will damage public confidence.”

That’s my biggest concern. We’ve already got these crazy pro-plaguers. A vaccine that doesn’t work, or worse yet, causes damage, would set the use of other vaccines waaaay back.

Medical Moron, with his magical thinking and terror of losing in November, doesn’t give a damn what kind of collateral damage he might cause. He just wants to save his repulsive self.

  13. cibvet

Jake–I think the word you were looking for was “fragged”.

Jerry– I am one person.one vote in a country full of white cult followers of trump republicans that are leading this country into fascism.
    Examples
Accuse the other parties of being fascists. (check)
Declare white supremacy while stoking fear of the other people. (check)
Rid the country of the sick and handicapped. ( check)
Turn the followers against the free press. ( check)
Nationalize a TV/radio propaganda station. Fox news. (check)
I could go on with more examples, but here is the point. If Biden loses, this will probably be the last presidential election where more than one candidate can run.Example think trump dynasty.

  14. Jake

cibvet-you are so correct on your correction; I stand corrected! Your take on fascism is also correct, and Trump’s family will be ensconced in control of America for good. That’s his grand plan-you hit the nail on the head….
