Barth: Coronavirus That Goes on in Sturgis Doesn’t Stay in Sturgis

Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth has taken Governor Kristi Noem’s advice and put on his positive pants. He’s positive that crowding tens of thousands of bikers into Sturgis will bring more positive cases of coronavirus:

“You know, whatever goes on in Sturgis, doesn’t stay in Sturgis. It travels home with you, whether it’s coronavirus or an STD or a criminal record or, you know, whatever.” Commissioner Jeff Barth told CNN.

“It’s a little scary to have these many people come.”

Mr Barth thought that “someday, maybe six months from now, we’ll see tombstones that say: He went to Sturgis” [“Tens of Thousands Converge on South Dakota Town Sturgis for Biggest US Public Event During Pandemic,” SBS News, 2020.08.08].

It’s nice that someone from South Dakota can get on national news to make intelligent observations about public health.

The #Sturgis motorcycle rally starts this weekend, and we’re excited for visitors to see what our great state has to offer!

Let’s see… possibility of hundreds and thousands of sick and dead visitors. hat is a nice touch.

How about incompetent wingnut leadership on another grande scale? (see drumpf)

Somehow I am not seeing a massive potential covid hot spot as being in a “good place” in a covid 19 fight.

  2. grudznick 2020-08-09 11:20

We just wrapped up the breakfasting and debates at the Conservatives with Common Sense weekly meeting and I was surprised nobody brought up the Sturgis or the Covid bugs despite some leather biker fellow clearly hacking up a lung out in the main dining area. He was probably a doobie smoker.

grudznick doesn’t want the covid bugs any more than the next fellow, but I am sure Mr. Barth, who wheezes when walking down the hills, fears the covid bugs more than most. He is well within his CNN rights to be afeared of the bikers roaring about and I would not be opposed to Governor Noem banning any out-of-state visitors to South Dakota. But once they are here they will go where their freedoms let them. We cannot stop them from congregations any more than we can keep the Rainbow Family from congregating.

  3. mike from iowa 2020-08-09 12:27

Tossing aside covid 19 threat, Grudzilla’s life is surely moar endangered having biker thugs, and even nice bikers, by the tens of thousands tearassing around the place.

Rainbow people would likely smother you with peace and joy.

  4. 96Tears 2020-08-09 13:36

COVID Kristi’s ineptitude won’t fill up South Dakota hospitals and morgues nearly as much as what will happen when these biker fools get on the plane or stop in at interstate rest stops and restaurants and bars after they leave Sturgis. Many of them were flying Old Glory on the backs of their bikes when they entered Sturgis. Maybe they ought to be buried with those flags in honor of their service of infecting others to kill or maim them. Great Americans. Just ask them.

  5. grudznick 2020-08-09 13:39

Rainbow people, Mr. Mike, bring far more drugs and crime into any area than bikers. This is a documented fact even there in Iowa, where neither group bothers to congregate.

Can’t eat bacon through a mask.
In gravy I want to bask.

Europe’s papers are headlining our failures and their worries.

“ROME (AP) — With confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. hitting 5 million Sunday, by far the highest of any country, the failure of the most powerful nation in the world to contain the scourge has been met with astonishment and alarm in Europe.

Perhaps nowhere outside the U.S. is America’s bungled virus response viewed with more consternation than in Italy, which was ground zero of Europe’s epidemic. Italians were unprepared when the outbreak exploded in February, and the country still has one of the world’s highest official death tolls at 35,000.”

We were adequately warned and warned again, but trump republicans ignored the warning…still. So we keep dying until someone has the good sense to shut the place down to get a handle on it…just like Europe did and China before them.

  7. grudznick 2020-08-09 13:47

No shutting down, Mr. jerry. Look at the Piney Ridge and how well the “shutdown” has worked for the people who live there. The science tells us, and grudznick reads all the science, the virus cannot be stopped. It is herd immunity that will save most of us.

  8. james 2020-08-09 13:48

Oh oh. Covid numbers for today are out. 129 new cases out of 911 tests. (14%) And it appears that Spearfish and Sturgis areas are starting to rise. That’s before the rally’s impact.

  9. leslie 2020-08-09 14:24

I see grdz is continuing his racism toward 10% of South Dakotans (the original residents). Last time here he attacked their sacred sites (calls Pe’ Sla) cold slaw, Black Elk peak Ben’s namesake, and Hin Han Kaga Paha” he calls “Two Owls Screwing” so his racist fat f*cks in their Monday a.m. hog trough laugh themselves soiled. Cute.

  10. leslie 2020-08-09 14:31

Cut Banditos, Hell’s Angels ect. drug dealing/gun slinging a pass, eh grdz? Can’t keep yer parodies straight entertaining Neal and the rest of SD GOP w/o a lick of sense, eh? Predictable.

  11. grudznick 2020-08-09 15:26

Who is this Neal of whom you type, Ms. Leslie? By all accounts these bandito fellows are generally nice and are only 1% of the mob anyway. It is your neighborhood people who are lawyers and doctors and convenience store clerks who make up the bulk of the mob. The mob rules, so be careful who you accuse because the lunatic fringe is out there.

  12. grudznick 2020-08-09 15:31

Ms. Leslie, I don’t recall calling any piece of rock “two owls screwing”. I could be wrong. There might be a rock some people call that name. I just don’t know where it is. Can you share a mapping? Put it in relation to Reynolds Prairie so I can get me a foot orientation from the center of all that is.

  13. mike from iowa 2020-08-09 15:51

It is herd immunity that will save most of us.
Correct. Most of us Libs are immune from wingnut herd baloney.
Florida set the national record for single day new cases of covid at over 15k. Wisconsin just set a new single day record as well. Florida and California each have over a half million cases and Texas is fast reaching that level.

I don’t think this will just go away on ts own until we are all gone.

  14. grudznick 2020-08-09 17:22

Mr. mike, I have been testing all your old goats. All of them show they have the antibodies, meaning they have already been gotten. You can sleep a little tighter, under your blankie, at least for one more night. Don’t fret about Iowa starting to drown in its own snot. That probably won’t affect you.

  15. jerry 2020-08-09 18:37

Wonder what will happen at grain terminals when the workers there get the Covid? What happens when the custom harvesters get the Covid and are not able to bring in the crop? How will all that work with the party in Sturgis endangering so many of us? Right now, we are seeing the numbers rise, how many is too many for the hospitals to handle?

Also, veterans, like myself, use the Fort Meade facilities 52 weeks of the year. We kind of not go during the rally if possible. Why doesn’t the city of Sturgis recognize what capital outlay that hospital supplies to their economy? If they did recognize that, then why would they endanger that year round economic spending with the pandemic trump virus rally?…

  16. grudznick 2020-08-09 18:53

Mr. Barth, through his ignorism and failed politicianing, is indeed a magenet for the bloggings. Mr. Barth, next time, walk up the hill.

  17. DaveFN 2020-08-09 18:54

A few hundred rally-goers return home and develop COVID within a week. Contact tracers attempt to determine their myriad Sturgis contacts with the result that 250,000 people now require quarantine for 2 weeks. Really?

  18. grudznick 2020-08-09 19:09

The Conservatives with Common sense are not attending the Sturgis this year. People at the Sturgis are insaner than most. Conservatives with Common Sense hope the best for all, regardless of their state, bike maker, or style of colors and hats. The Conservatives with Common Sense passed a resolution to this effect just this morning.

To any libbies who want to gloat about the deaths or uncomforts brought on by the out-of-staters flocking to the Black Hills, we can only ask that you look deeper within your ownselfs.

Another slowed down Sunday body count…

    Coronavirus Cases:
    5,199,444
    Deaths:
    165,617

Things will pick up Tuesday after Monday’s hangover.

It’s really bizarre, but so much of this whole trumpelstilskin cult has been. I guess every cult is.

Members of any cult will act in ways that are not in their best interests, and in extreme cults, will even risk their lives or die for their cult. We know about Jonesville, the Branch Davidians, numerous cults that fleeced willing members of their every cent.

The difference here is the size and power of this cult. As more cult members die of C-19 and conditions eventually improve for the survivors under President Biden, the less brain washed members will drift away. However, those who are fully enveloped in the madness never will. They’ll be a new “list cause” group.

I think I’ll call them the “Brain Dead Boys.”

  21. leslie 2020-08-09 22:35

Mfi-SD positives are up-100 yesterday, 125 today reported.

  22. Eddie 2020-08-09 22:39

Let’s profile the typical rally attendee. He/she has a tendency toward high risk behavior: smoking, alcohol consumption, occasionally driving after consuming a few. They tend toward unhealthy diets, lack of physical exercise, and obesity (you don’t see a lot of scrawny bikers)
Riding motorcycles without helmets is not safe.
Given the age of the attendees and the general health and proclivities that COVID is probably the least of their worries.
I am not saying they aren’t good people. They are, but look at the facts

  23. Debbo 2020-08-09 23:50

    100 in one day? Yikes!

  24. mike from iowa 2020-08-10 08:15

I got everything South Dakota had to offer back in the early 70s at the olde Buckaroo Bar in Hudson, South Dakota. Even had a billboard with guv Dick Kniep welcoming my weekend drinking escapades.

I agree with Jenny. Also, this ‘libbie’ is not gloating over death and is concerned about the idiots trying to flaunt their independence and selfishness by coming here. Many are just old pervs like yourself trying to leer at exploited women. Look ‘deeper’ within myself?? If they are doctors, lawyers and convenience clerks it doesn’t give them a pass from stupidity. Grudz smugness and what he thinks is his unique grasp of the English language is getting old in the time of people dying and suffering. Gravy jokes about the pandemic aren’t funny. His insults while hiding behind his anonymity toward Joe Lowe and Dana Hannah whom in my opinion have done more for people in South Dakota than the anonymous Grudznick are pretty nauseous.
The banditos aren’t bad fellows? Stfu. The national president and vice president were convicted of murder, extortion, etc and sentenced to life plus years. That was in 2018. They just let idiot wannabes join the club to provide a smoke screen for their terrible crimes. Grudz do these nice people a favor and find a different blog to ruin. Nobody cares what you think but yourself.

Big 10 conference voted to not play football this fall. Concerns with covid was the reason. Earlier, they decided no out of conference games.

iowa football pays for the rest of the sports programs in iowa city.
Hard economic times ahead for unis without sports revenues. Maybe the focus will shift towards more academics and that might be a good thing.

Maybe Kruel Kristi gets her info, such as it is, from one of these fake news sites operated by GOP loyalists and/or operatives.

Yep. Complain. Complain. Try and control everyone’s actions. Put us all in straight jackets. That’s some way to live. In perpetual fear. Thank the Lird for a Governor like Kristie Noem who let’s us decide for ourselves.

  31. bearcreekbat 2020-08-11 20:48

Steven seems to be overlooking the possibility that just maybe the right “way to live” is to make efforts to avoid infecting other people. While some folks hope a mask will protect them, most wear masks because we have been warned that not wearing a mask could cause us to inadvertently infect other innocent folks with Covid 19.

I can’t see how caution (or in Steven’s words “perpetual fear”) in an effort to avoid harming others deserves condemnation. As for living our lives in a “straight jacket,” if I am not mistaken virtually all of our criminal laws are designed to stop us from making our own decisions that have the potential to harm other people (e.g., DUI laws). Unfortunately some folks who are permitted “to decide for ourselves” make selfish decisions that result in tragic and sometimes fatal consequences for innocent folks.

    Who’s lird?

  33. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2020-08-12 07:21

Right on the money, Bear. Getting sick, lying in a hospital bed, and dying from a preventable disease all put much greater restrictions on my liberty than wearing a mask.
