Rapid City Teacher Seeks Safe Return; Wingnut Calls Teachers Frail, Cowardly Virus-Hypers

Rapid City Education Association chief Sue Podoll told her school board last night that teachers are as eager as anyone to get back teaching under normal circumstances, but she says we have to keep our kids safe:

The board heard public comments first from Sue Podoll, a teacher in the district and the president of the Rapid City Education Association. Podoll said “there isn’t a teacher in this district that doesn’t want to be back to school with our kids,” but that the teachers all want to go back safely.

“‘Safely’ means we have the support, materials, supplies and the plan that ensures we are not risking our health and the health and safety of our students and colleagues,” Podoll said [Morgan Matzen, “RCAS Won’t Have Back-to-School Plan Until Late July, Early August,” Rapid City Journal, 2020.07.13].

Radical right-wingnut and enemy of public education Florence Thompson uses the occasion to call teachers frail fakers:

Florence Thompson, president of South Dakota Parents Involved in Education and a retired school psychologist, said the media is hyping up the coronavirus and that the pandemic is extremely politicized.

Thompson also said “children are at very low risk for COVID-19” and “adults are more vulnerable.”

“There is no risk to children. They have more risk driving to and from school, walking to and from school, than they do from COVID-19,” Thompson said. “If the teachers are in such poor health that their immune systems are so bad that they can’t take the risk to be there, then they should be put on some kind of disability and find another job” [Matzen, 2020.07.13].

Compare practicing teacher Podoll’s practical and professional concern with Thompson’s insulting bushwah, and you could get the impression that teacher-hating Trumpists like Flo are hoping that coronavirus will either drive lots of teachers out of the profession or kill them off.

Looks to me like Flo has some pretty impressive positions……
    South Dakota Parents involved with
    Indoctrination.
    A Psychologist too?
Someone should probably get Flo on the couch.
She’ll have to position herself upside down however.
Her head is in her ass.

Comments like this are right up there with stable genius thoughts like “if you don’t test, you won’t have cases.” My wife was a preschool aide for 3 years. She had a very fine immune system, thank you very much. She still caught every childhood malady that parents sent her way, knowingly or not. There has to be a plan other than “send ’em back.” Donald? Kristi? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone… !@#%^&*

Florence Thompson is very anti-LGBT and is involved in the potty bills every year in Pierre. She’s more scared of transgenders pottying than the virus.

Yeah, walking to school poses risks. When I was on the school board in Rapid City, some parents were concerned about kids crossing LaCrosse Street to get to school. It had been a concern of mine, too, when my daughter crossed this street. I walked with her much of kindergarten to make sure she could cross the street. Well, parents wanted a better solution, a crossing light, to stop traffic when kids were crossing. They lobbied for it. They got it. Risk lowered.

I think physical schools are going to have a hard time staying open without a vaccine, but risk can be lowered with social distancing, masks cleaning and hygiene.

Flo is a certified moron. In Israel, they’re finding out how dumb they were as well.

“JERUSALEM—Israel’s unchecked resurgence of COVID-19 was propelled by the abrupt May 17 decision to reopen all schools, medical and public-health officials have told The Daily Beast.

“We know Israelis have terrible discipline, but now, it’s the leadership. ”
    — Galia Rahav, Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv

The assessment of Israel’s trajectory has direct bearing on the heated debate underway in the United States between President Donald Trump, who is demanding a nationwide reopening of schools for what appear to be largely political reasons, and health authorities who caution it could put the wider population at risk.

Importantly, on May 17 in Israel it appeared the virus not only was under control, but defeated. Israel reported only 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the entire country that day. In the U.S., the debate often is about reopening schools where the disease is not only not in decline, but surging.” https://www.thedailybeast.com/israeli-data-show-school-openings-were-a-disaster-that-wiped-out-lockdown-gains?via=newsletter&source=DDMorning

Israeil and the United States now share something ugly and important.
““We know Israelis have terrible discipline, but now, it’s the leadership. ”
    — Galia Rahav, Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv

Yes, our leadership from Fat Nixon to EB5 Short Rounds is killing us in a war of attrition that they both soak their hands in the blood of those who are sick and dying. Add Flo into the mix and you have the most toxic blood letting you can possibly imagine.

I think Flo should come out of retirement and be a substitute teacher for those teachers who get Covid during the school year.

  7. Eve Fisher 2020-07-14 13:38

Some basic questions that have to be answered before reopening happens, and so far are being ignored:
How is a school supposed to reopen with the same number of students in the same number of classrooms while socially distancing? Are they going to run 24/7? And who’s going to teach the night shift?
How are they going to socially distance on school buses?
Since the schools aren’t going to supply masks for children, but only “encourage” them and teachers to wear them, do teachers have to pay for masks and cleaning supplies out of their own pocket as well as actual school supplies?

Meade county schools (a coven of intellectual thought processing) will open without any further guidelines other than the ones they pull out of their arse’s. Clearly the air must be bad there as this is the same city that will bring in the rally covid killers. What a brain thrust.

If we can get Flo out of the cave where she hangs with the rest of the ding bats, maybe she should volunteer to teach. Lead by example.

“71% of U.S. parents polled in the new Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index say it’d be risky to send children back to school in the fall — including nine in 10 Black Americans and even a slim majority of Republicans.”
    Axios AM by Mike Allen.

Even a majority of GOP know sending children back to school is a bad idea. Even Republicans! You know it’s got to be very serious then.

I like what Nix and Caroline said about Flo. Scary to think she was credentialed as a psychologist. Eeeek!

  10. Debbo 2020-07-14 16:08

In addition, even those macho women and men in the GOP are catching on to the importance of mask wearing. 62% of all Americans say they wear a mask when they leave home. 45% of Republicans do. A month ago it was 35% of them.

There’s an Axios graph that shows the progression here: is.gd/KUbfTI

FEMA mobile morgues are being sent to Texas, South Dakota better hurry up and order some so we don’t have to take our dead to the supermarkets to keep’m cool.

“Local news reports from Texas and Arizona say that officials and hospital chains have begun in recent weeks to order extra, mobile morgues. The reasons differ, but they either come as a response to death rates starting to overwhelm storage capacity for the dead or as local officials anticipate and prepare for the same.

FEMA told TPM that it is sending 14 “mortuary support units” to Texas in response to a July 11 request from the state’s department of emergency management. The units, a FEMA spokesperson said, “are in transit and should arrive at the state by early next week.”

Local officials in Texas have been agitating for the mobile morgues as death counts rise.”

Be the first one’s on your block to have a FEMA morgue trailer in the park.

    Two milestones surpassed today…..

    Coronavirus Cases:
    3,541,229
    Deaths:
    139,112

Passed 3.5 million cases and 139k deaths due to a magically disappearing hoax that simply has not magically disappeared.

“South Dakota Public Safety Secretary Craig Price — who was appointed to President Trump’s commission on law enforcement this year — signed an agreement in April to share information from driver’s licenses and state ID cards with the U.S. Census Bureau, according to a copy of the memorandum of understanding the state’s Department of Public Safety provided to NPR.”

I share Caroline’s sentiment: anyone who thinks teachers aren’t tough enough should sign up to sub for a week.

Of course, letting virus-deniers like Flo into the schools would only increase the potential of our children getting sick.

  17. Cory Allen Heidelberger Post author | 2020-07-14 19:07

Debbo, that mask poll is interesting. Flo is in the minority even among her own party members: “…95% of Democrats say they wear a mask some or all of the time outside the house, compared with 74% of Republicans.” That such huge majorities of both parties are masking up is a remarkably swift cultural shift. Just six months ago, I thought the Chinese were overdoing it wearing masks in public, and I couldn’t imagine myself doing so. Now… well, here we are.

Unlike Florence, Trump, and their party, teachers don’t fake toughness or caring.

Ms. Caroline, I don’t think we want those insaner than most, like this Ms. Flo person is, to be molding the minds of our youngsters in District 30.

Will there be kool deadwood night, state fair and rally let er rip.Mask , masks play offs.

  20. grudznick 2020-07-14 20:47

I don’t understand your blogging, Mr. Moses, but yet there will be nights in Deadwood, a State Fair, and apparently those decrepit derelict motor cyclists intend to gather their unwashed masses up there in Sturgis town. I suppose some will wear face masks and some might not. Sturgis town frowns upon the masks.

There are a passel of frail minded teachers and lazy ones too, on the lower levels of the SILT scale. However they are physically able to fight off the viruses just like everyone else. Time to work harder for those raises.

  23. jerry 2020-07-15 12:39

Walmart and Sam’s Club join with Menard’s to require face masks or shop someplace else. Booyah! When business can see and act when government cannot, then you know we’re in trouble.
