Escaped Black Angus, Not Armed Pursuer, Blamed for School Lockdown

Loose Cow Causes Hartley School Lockdown,” reads the headline our friend Mike from Iowa sends.

Security theater gone amuck, I think. Children subjected to PTSD due to one rebellious bovine?

Oh no, don’t blame the Black Angus. Blame the guy who went chasing after beef on the hoof with his gun:

A cow escaped from Nelson’s Locker in Hartley after being unloaded from a trailer.

An employee from the locker began chasing after the animal while carrying a firearm.

The locker is located east of the high school. Both facilities sit on the north side of Highway 18 on the west edge of Hartley.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School District superintendent Patrick Carlin said at about 4:20 p.m. members of the school’s athletic teams who were outside practicing by the football field noticed the armed man east of them.

This led the staff to initiate a lockdown procedure.

…The cow was eventually killed, bled and dragged back to Nelson’s Locker, Jodean Nelson confirmed.

“He’s hamburger now,” she said [Ty Rushing, “Loose Cow Causes Hartley School Lockdown,” NWestIowa.com, 2019.09.18].

No word on whether the knucklehead who went running toward a school with a gun and caused a lockdown will be bled, dragged, or otherwise punished for his action.

Mike, does JJ know about this?

I’m so glad lots of guns in the hands of “good guys” makes us safer. How about an IQ test before every gun purchase?

Nope. Haven’t visited there in a couple months I’m guessing.

In my day some of the kids in the high school would have been livestock savvy enough to help corral the critter and if that wasn’t possible some of the guys would have had a good quality rifle in their trunk to help dispatch the unruly beast!

Hartley only has one policeman (last I heard) and then there is the county sheriff and IHP. Bet it was funny watching one policeman ride herd on dozens of athletes trying to lock down the school.

There does seem to be a lack of discernment and communication here. School officials could easily have recognized the situation for what it was. The meat locker could have called the school and explained right away (not like there was a rush; the cow wouldn’t get far). It’s not hard to tell the difference between a member of the well-regulated militia carrying out his duty to protect us from a black invader and a member of the Trench Coat Mafia coming to off the jocks.
