Daugaard Offers Tariff-Whacked Farmers Hope, Not Philosophical Consistency

Governor Dennis Daugaard isn’t doing any better at offering a coherent political response to the Trump tariffs than his pal Dusty Johnson. At last week’s Governor’s Agriculture Summit in Rapid City, Governor Daugaard said the government should not interfere with the economy:

President Trump has suggested that the pressure might be taken off grain farmers with a program of subsidies or grain price supports.  But Daugaard rejects that idea.

“I would not…I would not support price fixing of any kind. I think we have to let the economy do what it does,” said Daugaard.

In spite of the fact that it’s government action that’s causing prices to drop, Daugaard said further government action has to be avoided.

“If there are artificial changes to prices because of government action, and to the extent that that government action creates inequity or imbalances, then that’s wrong,” said the Governor [Al Van Zee, “Daugaard Hopes Trade War Won’t Break Farmers,” KELO-TV, 2018.07.12].

So if we’re letting the economy do what the economy does, that would mean not imposing tariffs that close foreign markets to South Dakota farmers, right?

And if government action causes artificial changes in prices, as tariffs are causing right now, and that action creates inequities by trading free enterprise for crony capitalism, then it’s wrong to continue that action, and it’s right to end that action and let the economy get back to doing what the economy does, right?
