District 3 has a full slate of Republican candidates for Legislature. Rookie According to the Secretary of State’s official candidate list, Representative Drew Dennert filed his petition for reëlection on Monday. Fellow incumbent Senator Al Novstrup filed his petition Tuesday, as did recently announced candidate Carl Perry, who is running for the House seat Rep. Dan Kaiser is leaving to run for Brown County sheriff. All three men live in Aberdeen.
Still no word from Kaleb Weis, who converted his Facebook campaign page from his failed 2017 Aberdeen City Council bid to “Weis for SD House” in September but has made no public political peep since then. One eager reader tells me that Weis has moved across town to a District 2 address, which would mean he could petition to run for the seat from which Lake Norden’s Burt Tulson is retiring after this Session. However, as of this morning, Weis remains registered to vote in District 3.
No Democrats or other non-Trumpists have filed petitions or officially announced for District 3 House or Senate. Party candidates have until March 27 to file their petitions with the Secretary of State; independent candidates have until April 24.
