70 in November: Beautiful Day for Football, Gardening, and Winning an Election

What a beautiful Saturday for a tailgate party in Brookings! Sunshine, 70 degrees, SDSU Pride, shirtsleeves…

…and District 3 Senate candidate Rep. Al Novstrup.

How did the other Jackrabbit alumnus running for District 3 Senate spend our unbelievably beautiful Saturday? Well, I enjoyed some non-electoral distraction in the morning

…but then I had the town to myself for an afternoon of door-to-door campaigning:

Note the reflection: it's November 5, and I'm campaigning in shorts.

Me, the lean green campaign machine, and… hey! What are those signs in the background?
In the same yard—you know, I am 52% Libertarian....

SDSU beat Missouri State yesterday 49–24. I beat Al on doors 250–0.

If you want the job, you’ve got to work for it… especially on a 70-degree Saturday three days before the election.

Can you build a raised bed from the back of a bicycle?

I wonder if your opponent would need to source the job out to relatives and cronys so everyone gets a piece of the pie.

Oh look, politics has made mfi cynical.

  2. grudznick

I am glad to see my man Mr. Johnson has been out getting signs up in your town.

That bicycle looks pretty normal, Mr. H. I thought you had a funny bicycle but that one looks like just a regular bicycle. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I had just heard you were catching eyeballs by riding a funny bicycle.

  3. grudznick

Oh, and I saw this commercial. It doesn’t apply to Mr. H campaigning in Aberdeen or Mr. Novstrup campaigning at Aberdeenites who were in Brookings, but did you see the commercial where they blame Obama and Hillary for Initiated law #21? That seems insaner than all get out.

  4. Mike, I don’t text and drive, and I don’t operate power tools while bicycling. :-)

Grudz, I have multiple bicycles for multiple purposes. And yes, I’ve seen the payday lenders’ absurdity on the 36% rate cap. No honest South Dakotan will connect IM 21 and President Obama or Hillary Clinton.

Campaigning in shorts and gardening, all in November….. I guess Al Gore was right after all…..;-)

cory, best of luck in the election!

your previous republicanism and libertarianism and occasional obstreperousness give me pause, but your work here is unparalleled.

Johnson was known for a lack of interest in policy details[37] and those who worked with Johnson at the time “recall a chief executive who would speed through meetings and often preferred to discuss his fitness routine than focus on the minutiae of policymaking.”[37]…Johnson supports the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, allowing unlimited corporate independent expenditures on political campaigns. Johnson supports, however, full disclosure of such expenditures.[134] Johnson has said that he would immediately balance the federal budget, and would demand a balanced budget amendment.[135] He has stated he supports “slashing government spending”, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security,[126] which would involve cutting Medicare and Medicaid by 43 percent and turning them into block grant programs, with control of spending in the hands of the states to create, in his words, “fifty laboratories of innovation.”[135] He has referred to Social Security as a pyramid scheme. He has advocated passing a law allowing for state bankruptcy and expressly ruling out a federal bailout of any states.[120] Johnson has expressed opposition to the Federal Reserve System, which he has cited as massively devaluing the strength of the U.S. dollar

Leslie, I believe it is one of the new cholesterol drugs on the market…

An old dog food that is not too bad if you mix it with the right amount of mayo and sweet relish

OT Comey clears HRC again. No charges from Weiner’s emails.

  11. mike from iowa

Aleppo is THAT town in Syria systematically being destroyed that Gary Johnson had no clue about during Q&A because Johnson’s elevator doesn’t reach the top floor.

  12. Roger Cornelius

I thought Aleppo was a dog food.

That was the New York office of the FBI who used the book”Clinton Cash” as the basis for the investigation and continued after the Justice Department told them to call it a day. They basically did this on their own and leaked info to Fake Noize and Screwdy Rudy of the Drumpf campaign.

  14. jerry

The FBI has cleared Clinton again. So there is that. Now, how are we gonna heal the hate that guys like Novstrup have put out into the public domain? How do we start to heal the fear of those that are of different religious faiths? How do we start to heal the fear and hate of those that are of different skin color? These haters have harmed this great country maybe beyond all means of repair.

  15. grudznick

That’s a good question, Mr. jerry. A good question indeed. Just remember, we don’t have to look further than Mr. H’s campaign blog here to read hate comments from Libbies and Conservatives alike.

  16. jerry

A good question should have a good answer. What is our path? How can a religious hater come into Aberdeen and lie his arse off in a town that may market Halal food? The good people of Aberdeen and surrounding communities have a meat packing plant that may finally start to turn a profit and put much needed revenue back into the community that invested in it heavily with their tax dollars. Then comes this guy preaching lies and hate to put fear into the hearts of those that should know better, but listen to the nonsense.

In July, Comey said “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring such a case against Clinton over her private email server, but characterized the former secretary of state’s conduct as “extremely careless.”… the controversy has dogged her campaign from day one.
    Following Comey’s initial letter to lawmakers, Trump rose in the polls and Clinton declined slightly….again;

Comey rocked the presidential campaign when he informed Congress, just 11 days before the election, that the FBI found emails “pertient” to its closed investigation into Clinton’s private server on a computer belonging to Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

“Since my letter, the FBI investigative team worked around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in an unrelated criminal investigation,” Comey wrote to lawmakers on Sunday, two days before Election Day.

Hopefully the breitbart FBI agents are the ones now without asleep, as well as republican, now much maligned Comey. It is common, I think, in government for staff to hold different political beliefs from, and undercutting Department heads. at times enviros populate the Forest Service during republican eras.

I meant to delete the last line

  19. mike from iowa

The new emails were all duplicates that had been examined before. Comey’s head and others need to roll.Be a shame to have Drumpf steal the election, have a wingnut appeals court keep Drumpf in the WH and have a divided 4-4 court allow this injustice to go on.

  20. jerry

Here ya go Grudz, Trump is such an out of control danger that his campaign took away his twitter account. President Obama had this to say about that “If somebody can’t handle a Twitter account, they can’t handle the nuclear codes.” Here is the dude the FBI wants to put in charge, says a lot about both of them.

  21. grudznick

Mr. jerry, that Mr. Trup fellow is insaner than most and I have never said I back him. Did you think I do? You are not paying attention well if that is the case.

  22. jerry

I could care who you support or do not support Grudz, that is between you and your pencil in the voting booth. I always appreciate a good zinger and that one that Obama just laid out was one of those. You are correct, I do not pay attention, but sometimes I do pay attention.

  23. grudznick

    Good to hear, Mr. jerry.

“I am 52% Libertarian.” I knew it all along, but still, make the logical choice, take out the trash, vote for Hillary.

  25. Sam@

    Good luck on Tuesday!!!

  26. Leslie, my obstreperousness should give you pause. That’s the point—everyone should stop and think, and I will keep encouraging everyone to do that. :-D

  27. Sam, thanks! Hap, you know my Democratic-ness comes with extra seasoning. ;-)

  28. John Kennedy Claussen, Sr.

Cory, I hear you, I was just having a little fun. I have been wearing shorts outside, too, in recent days…..

But if all of those people do end up heading for the plains, the Right will just blame it on a Democratic conspiracy to increase voter registration numbers in the fly over states and they will still dismiss global warming, I am afraid…

  29. I’m with you on the fun, John KC. I often thought fondly of global warming when I spent my winer in Edmonton and biked to class every day for a month in –40° weather. (But at least it wasn’t raining!)

Wait—coastal states are blue, global warming drives them to the plains, SD’s Democratic registration increases… you just sold me. Heat the planet!
