Customer Lays Gun on Table at Aberdeen Starbucks—Ah, How Convenient

Elisa Sand reports that a customer drew a pistol at the Aberdeen Starbucks yesterday. According to Aberdeen PD, the individual “possessed a valid concealed carry permit, but had placed a handgun on the table for a period of time. This was reportedly done as a matter of convenience.”

Say, neighbor, if you choose to carry a deadly weapon in public, you give up some convenience. You take on the responsibility to control your weapon and remain constantly alert for hazards that might result in the loss or discharge of your weapon. You also assume a responsibility not to cause undue alarm with your weapon and to unholster it in public only in situations that require its use.

In the post-Columbine/9-11/Charleston/San Bernadino era, one could argue that drawing a gun in public is akin to shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Responsible citizens alert to possible workplace shooters could reasonably see an individual in a coffee shop drawing a gun from his jacket or bag, conclude that the individual poses a threat, shout “Gun!” to warn fellow citizens, and leap to restrain the possible threat. A responsible gun owner should be aware that displaying a gun in public, absent any clear and present threat, creates its own clear and present threat.

But let’s look at what my neighbors are saying on the Aberdeen PD Facebook page:Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 8.18.35 Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 8.19.51 Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 8.20.09If you can’t safely handle your pistol and your cinnamon dolce latté at the same time, you should probably set one down on the table… and that one is not the pistol.

The moment he put the gun in his hand in a business is the moment he justified having police swarm the place with their own guns drawn. Or having someone else pull a gun in self defense. Reckless conduct putting all customers and employees and police at risk and potentially in fear for their safety.

Thought prolly never crossed his mind he could comfortably drink coffee while his shooty gun was at home. Where was the good coffee drinker with a gun when he/she was needed?

The gun horny ammosexuals just can’t bear to leave their guns at home. They’ll miss them too much.

  4. David B. 2016-02-19 10:12

Jenny – Not all concealed permit holders are “gun horny ammosexuals”. Some carry concealed because either their life or the life of a family member has been in harms way in the past. And not a perceived threat, mind you, but an actual physical act. If it has never happened to you or someone you love, that’s wonderful. I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. But don’t lump all concealed carry holders into the same group as the idiot in the Aberdeen Starbucks. I guarantee you have sat within inches of a concealed weapon at one point or another in your life and never even knew it.

David B. makes a reasonable point. But I have to note, for the record, that David B. is hot, with or without his weapon. ;-)

Awwwwwwwwwww…. Thanks, Cory!!! You know… A little rouge here… A dab of stage glue there… But it’s the eyeliner that really makes it pop!!! :-)

Ror lays out the tactical situation I can envision. If I’m carrying a gun, I need to think about what situations will provoke me to draw. Naturally, those situations should only include life-threatening situations where the display of my weapon could stop a threat.

If I see another person produce a weapon, I have a split second to discern whether that person intends to shoot. If I am a responsible defender, can I afford to wait and watch and not draw my weapon?

What’s proper police protocol in a situation like that? Armed cop on patrol sees a civilian pull a firearm from a pocket or jacket. In that instant, what does the police officer do?

  9. mike from iowa 2016-02-19 12:56

I’m guessing police protocol is to first determine color of suspect and then shoot if suspect is something other than white. But that’s just me.

The video of the killing of 12 year old Tamir Rice answers your question Cory.

? bcb,off topic. If you are on parole and you skip the country and hide in Mexico,is that a violation of parole?

  12. bearcreekbat 2016-02-19 14:24

mfi – Normally someone on parole has to have permission to leave the jurisdiction, so in the typical case skipping the country would violate the conditions of parole.

It’s easy to foresee a situation whereby a shop owner “pops” a nut who draws out a gun in a shop – ‘fearing for his life’, “fearing for the lives of his/her customers,” “protecting his property” – all the right wing horny gun ammosexuals sound track.

Concealed carry and public display are terrible laws and practices. Science shows the mere presence of guns increases violence. Keep them home, at the range, or in the field. Science shows that concealed carry never stopped a mass shooting or presidential assassination. Concealed carry has almost no public utility, yet is instead a huge public liability.

db-I sit next to cops all day long and don’t have a fear. I bring my little grand children into starbux across the country. and I stand with the victim who needs to be armed.

but Aberdeen is purely provocation, yeah i’m sure there were exigent circumstances. yeah, just like civic center hockey/beer chuckers, we’ll have to wait for all the facts before a final opinion can be made, but until then, and given law enforcement investigations there, at MCEC and EB5 in this state, we’ll not be satisfied.

but when i’m in public and realize a citizen is carrying, I leave. life is short, i’d rather stay up late than get shot by the carriers dog. when i’m pheasant hunting nobody carries their weapon into the diner.

    handguns for pheasants? its coming.

  15. Roger Cornelius 2016-02-19 15:30

I have a simple rule about this, if I see a gun in public whether it is in a vehicle or hanging on someone’s hip, I side on the side of caution and call 911.
Apparently someone did the right thing at Aberdeen Starbuck’s since the police were involved.

  16. Bill Dithmer 2016-02-19 15:41

    handguns for pheasants? its coming.”

Anyone that has been hit by pellets while blocking for bird hunters knows why that is a a bad idea.

    Wednesday, February 17, 2016 – Austin, Texas

Attorney General Ken Paxton issued the following statement after the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee held a hearing Wednesday examining interim charges meant to affirm First Amendment religious liberty protections in Texas:

“Religious liberty is the First Freedom established in the Bill of Rights, and the moral bedrock upon which our nation has been built. I commend the Texas Senate, Chairwoman Joan Huffman, and Lt. Gov. Patrick for holding this hearing and keeping a light shined on this important issue, working to assert these inalienable rights and protect the people of Texas from punishment for simply expressing their sincerely-held religious beliefs.”

In October, Attorney General Paxton sent a letter to Lt. Gov. Patrick with recommendations to further protect religious liberties. To view the letter click here: https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/files/epress/Patrick_-_Interim_Charges_on_Religious_Liberties_1.pdf

Attorney General Paxton has consistently defended religious liberties. On December 28, Attorney General Paxton joined an amicus brief urging the court to protect religious expression in the U.S. Military in United States v. Sterling. Most recently, on January 11, Attorney General Paxton filed an amicus brief on behalf of 20 states with the U.S. Supreme Court in Zubik v. Burwell, supporting the religious nonprofit’s right to exercise sincerely-held religious beliefs.

surprisingly the current Tx AG is not in RAGA, like marty jackley. Marty was named the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year in 2008. He presently serves as the President-Elect of the National Association of Attorneys General, and is the former Chair of the Conference of Western Attorneys General. http://www.republicanags.com/marty_j_jackley

Ask the parents of you child’s friends whether they have a gun in the house. I don’t care whether the gun is in a safe or in Fort Knox, my kid is not playing at their house and my family isn’t going over there. Period, end of story.

Leslie, I’d apply that Texas dean’s thinking to the Legislature: why at any point should a Senator have to rise to speak in opposition to a speaker who is wearing a gun? I’ll do it, but the optics are not healthy.

A 12-year-old girl was accidentally shot through the stomach during a Sunday gathering of the Three Percent of Idaho at a local gun range, according to the militia group’s president, Brandon Curtis, cofounder of pacific patriot network, who participated at bunkerville nv standoff and burns or standoff, rolling up on FBI Compound and then Harney County Sheriff.

rolling up on means arriving in force, unannounced, armed, armored and insisting on dialog calling the FBI OIC an asshole because Brandon was once a cop, as seen above.

I detect some of this same kind of patriotic belligerence from some of our republican legislators.

“Based on the overwhelming consensus of historical sources, we conclude that the protection of the Second Amendment—whatever the scope of that protection may be—simply does not extend to the carrying of concealed firearms in public by members of the general public,” 9th Circuit’s Fletcher wrote.

The 7-4 ruling upheld California’s broad restrictions on concealed-carry use in their entirety. today, atlantic
