Russia Tells America to Stop Surveilling ISIS Convoy, Trump Obliges

Candidate Trump, 2015:

“I would knock the hell out of ISIS… [and] when you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families,” the Republican presidential candidate said on Fox & Friends [Ashley Ross, “Donald Trump Says He’d ‘Take Out’ Terrorists’ Families,” Time, 2015.12.02].

President Trump, 2017:

At Russia’s request, the U.S. military on Friday called off its surveillance of a convoy of Islamic State fighters that has been stuck in the Syrian desert for the past 10 days, saying it is now up to the Syrian government to resolve its fate.

…The original convoy of 17 buses loaded with Islamic State fighters and their families had already broken up, with six managing to head back into Syrian government territory and 11 getting stuck after the bombing of the road. The U.S. military did not bomb the convoy itself, because of the presence of women and children [Liz Sly, “U.S. Warplanes Are Called off Surveillance of ISIS Convoy, at Russia’s Request,” Washington Post, 2017.09.08].

Once again, Donald Trump proves his tough words, even against the number-one threat that America faces, are just words, not to be backed up by tough, consistent action.

Trump is a deal maker. He has made deals with Russia and is keeping his word. Who else does he owe?

WWRD? (What Would Reagan Do?) We all need to ask our Republican friends this question, in reference to this reality, the next time we see them….. Somehow, this Trump position seems to be diametrically opposite to what Reagan really meant, when he said, “Trust, but verify….”

Your fourth link is directing to the wrong article.

Also, the article says the military has killed over 80 terrorists fleeing the vicinity, but refrained from killing the women and children. Would you rather have Trump order them killed too, in order to back up his words?

The article says the military has achieved those “clean kills” (my term) by keeping a close eye on the convoy with drones and catching the bad guys when they step away from the convoy to take a leak in the desert. If we stop watching, we can’t kill any more bad guys.

We need more information. “Warplanes” were called off, but does that include drones? If so, why not say drone surveillance instead of warplane surveilannce?

Joe, what some of us would like is an honest person in the WH, not the pathological liar in there now. The one who says whatever needs to be said to get elected-Jail HRC-and then passes his words off as campaign rhetoric.

    Mike! I want that too!

This Fox News story says drones were doing the surveillance and the picking off of ISIS fighters peeing in the bushes away from the convoy. It says the Russians asked us to withdraw our drones. Thus, says the Fox News story, the U.S. has no surveillance on the convoy.
